GARDAÍ have issued an urgent appeal to motorists tonight as weather conditions deteriorate.
Snow and sleet has been falling heavily in parts of Donegal.
The Errigal road between Termon and Dunlewey is particularly treacherous as are roads in and around Letterkenny, Ramelton, Milford, Creeslough and Dunfanaghy.
Driving conditions on the Barnesmore Gap are very poor.
Temperatures have already reached freezing and will drop further later, making for even more dangerous driving conditions.
Donegal County Council gritting lorries have started treating main routes across the county.
However secondary routes will not be treated.
Garda Traffic Inspector Michael Harrison said: “There are weather warnings in place and we would appeal to motorists to drive with extreme care over the next few days.”
The cold snap comes ahead of an Orange weather alert issued by Met Eireann for the early hours of Christmas Eve.
Wind gusts of up to 125km/hr are expected.
