ALERT: DONEGAL is being battered by severe storms, with roads flooded and damage caused to property overnight.
Gardaí have issued an urgent warning to motorists.
Force 11 gales – with hurricane-force wind gusts of 140km/hr – are hitting coastal areas along the west of Donegal.
The extreme low pressure system is being accompanied by a storm surge, raising water levels in some areas by up to three metres.
Trees have been uprooted in many areas, with flood waters also hampering drivers.
Met Eireann forecaster Pat Clarke said people should avoid walking in coastal areas today as some of the highest tides of the year are expected.
“Seas are going to remain high, and they’ll reduce a little on Friday but then they’re back up on Sunday and Monday,” he warned.
“It will be dangerous along the coasts.”
The low pressure system approaching Donegal Bay on Sunday evening could spark another Red Alert warning from Met Eireann.
