Gardaí have confirmed that roadside checkpoints and patrols will be continuing in key locations as Ireland begins the easing of Covid-19 restrictions today.

While some businesses reopen and work resumes for thousands of people, the vast majority of people are being asked to stay at home and avoid unnecessary journeys. Small group meetings are now being permitted, with up to 4 people who don’t live together meeting outdoors, while keeping at least 2 metres apart and staying in their 5km radius.

“We will continue to operate patrols and checkpoints at key locations,” said a statement from An Garda Síochána today. “We will also continue to be there to help the vulnerable in any way we can such as helping with their shopping, collecting their pension, or just a social distance chat.”

“We will continue to protect and support communities by preventing and detecting crime.”

Gardaí will also maintain their “engage, educate, encourage and enforce” approach to Covid-19 restrictions.

They said: “Please remember to #StayHome except for essential journeys, exercise within 5km of your residence.

“This Phase is critical for our country, there has been a high compliance to date and this has contributed to the country moving to this new phase and we want to thank the public for that compliance but compliance with the update guidelines must be maintained.

“If we adhere to the guidelines we can help save the lives of family, friends, colleagues and neighbours.”
