The nephew of two women attacked in their Co Donegal home has said greater sentences need to be handed out to stop the attacks.

Joe McKean was speaking after it was revealed that attacks on the elderly have increased by 50% in the past decade.

Mr Kean’s aunt Suzi Arthur died in October just weeks after herself and sister Isa were attacked in their home in Raphoe.

At the time Joe said he had no doubt it was the gang who broke into the elderly ladies’ home who were responsible for her death.

Joe said elderly people need more security in their homes to act as a deterrent.

But eh said the law also needs to come down harder on those committing the crimes.

There needs to be, in general, much stronger penalties for people who commit these crimes, such as harsher sentencing.

“IT is going to end up so serious in the next while that there will end up being more fatalities if the situation is not sorted,” he said.
