Several members from the CLG Baile na nGalloglach Senior Men’s and Ladies teams have volunteered to undertake the Off the Booze and On the Ball challenge.
The Senior Men are pictured at their first meeting of the season to plan their year ahead.
The ladies are due to meet at the end of January.
While abstaining from alcohol for a month is at the core of this challenge, the broader health message it promotes mirrors the components of a positive sporting ethos.
Mental and physical well-being, commitment, moderation, community, and a sense of achievement.
The Off the Booze and On the Ball initiative started nationally in January 2012 as an attempt to contribute to the growing conversation in Ireland about how we engage with alcohol.
It offers participants the time to pause after the hectic social calendar many of us find ourselves wrapped up in over the holiday season and to give us an opportunity to kick start the new year on a healthy footing.
Over 250 GAA clubs at home and abroad took up the challenge in year one and the numbers have been growing since. CLG BnaG are the first Donegal club to take up the challenge.
As part of the ‘Off the Booze and On the Ball’ initiative the BnaG club in association with the Sports Studies Department at Letterkenny Institute of Technology are offering players the opportunity to have some physiological testing done pre and post the challenge.
In addition to this there will be a healthy Club event for all club members and friends in late January where information will be provided on general health and well being.
It will cover topics such as Mental Fitness, Diet and Nutrition, ‘Alcohol /Drugs and You’, Getting Active, Beating the Bulge, Smoking Cessation and much more.
