THERE were heartbreaking scenes today at the funeral of a man murdered in a hit-and-run accident.
Many mourners came to pay their final respects to Pat John McCafferty at Requiem Mass at St Mary’s Church in Pettigo.
The 49-year-old died after being knocked down in the Tullychurry Road area of Leggs, Belleek, Co Fermanagh, last Sunday.
The PSNI say the dead man was deliberately knocked down and have launched a murder investigation.
A police spokesman in the North said detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
He said: “The blue Ford Focus believed to have been involved in the incident has been recovered and police are continuing to liaise with our colleagues in An Garda Siochana in relation to this investigation.”
A 40-year-old man was arrested by Gardai on Sunday and taken to Ballyand he was released pending a report to the DPP here.
“The PSNI intend to pursue a prosecution in relation to the death through the courts in Northern Ireland,” said a PSNI spokesman.
He appealed for anyone with information about the 2.50am incident to contact the PSNI in Enniskillen or Gardai in Ballyshannon.
