DONEGAL 3-17 QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST 3-05
DONEGAL eased to victory in the Dr McKenna Cup clash with the students of QUB in Ballybofey this evening.
It may have ended up looking like a comprehensive victory but the students put on a fight for the brave souls who turned up on a cold but calm night at McCumhaill Park.
Regardless, Donegal won’t make the semi-finals.
Donegal had led 1-07 to 2-00 at half-time, Ryan Rafferty scoring the visitors two goals, before adding a third in the second half.
Was this the first ever hat-trick by a visiting player in a ‘county’ clash?
Murphy had responded with a wonderful goal, smashing it into the top corner from all of 25 yards.
Murphy and McFadden soon set about extending the four point lead at the re-start, the latter bagging a goal with a fine finish – Christy Toye and Stephen McLaughlin hitting great points in the meantime.
Rory Kavanagh added a third goal – and a point – before the end on what was a good work-out for Jim McGuinness’s side.
