The USL has received another blow following the confirmation last night that Kildrum Tigers will not be participating in this season’s USL as they seek a return to the Donegal League next season.
The decision by Kildrum to opt out of the league now leaves the USL with an eight team division.
Kildrum have been one of a number of clubs that have suffered badly due to the regulations in the transfer window that allows players to return to the Donegal League before the USL season has finished.
Due to the mass exodus of players leaving Station Road to ply their trade in the Donegal League, Kildrum often struggled to field towards the end of last season.
The club were fined for their failure to do so on one occasion last season.
The club had appointed Colm Cassidy and had entered the USL for the 2014 campaign, however it quickly became evident that a large number of those players that left mid-way through last season would not be returning.
An emergency meeting was held last night by the board and the difficult decision to withdraw from the league was taken.
Kildrum have enjoyed fantastic success over the last decade in the USL winning the title on three occasions.
They also reached the semi-finals of the Intermediate Cup in 2006 but for now at least the Tigers will return to the Donegal League from next season on-wards.
