DONEGAL MAN PLEADS NOT GUILTY TO ANGLO BANK CHARGES

WILLIE MCATEERA CO Donegal man is one of three people who have pleaded not guilty today to charges relating to Anglo Irish Bank.

William McAteer, 63, from Auburn Villas, Rathgar in Dublin and originally from Rathmullan appeared at the Central Criminal Court this morning.

Mr McAteer (pictured) is charged with 16 counts of providing unlawful assistance to 16 individuals in July 2008 to buy shares in the former Anglo Irish Bank Corporation Plc.

He replied ‘not guilty’ to each of the charges when they were put to him.

Sean FitzPatrick, 65, from Whitshed Road Greystones in Co Wicklow and Pat Whelan, 51, of Coast Road, Malahide  in Dublin, face the same charges. They also pleaded not guilty. Mr Whelan also denied a further seven charges.

Fifteen jurors are being selected today for a trial expected to last several months.

Twelve jurors will hear the case, with three reserve jurors also selected in the event one of the 12 is unable to continue.
