snowCOUNTY council gritting lorries have been despatched across major roads in the county after snow falls in many parts of Donegal.

It follows up to 3cms of snow in Mayo and Galway earlier.

There had been snow in parts of Donegal on Friday morning.

But as temperatures dropped again this evening, there has been more snow across the county, including in Letterkenny and Donegal Town.

Driving conditions in many areas – including the Errigal Road in Dunlewey and the Barnesmore gap – are poor.

A Garda spokesman appealed for drivers to take extreme care overnight.

The snowfalls – although light – come ahead of a massive storm set to hit Donegal this weekend.

The worst of it arrive around dawn, with high tides due around the same time.

The Irish Coast Guard has again warned people to stay away from piers, harbours and coastal paths this weekend.

It is also going to last longer than first thought; right through until 9pm on Sunday.

Some forecasters believe the storm could be worse that first thought.
