WEEKEND storms have caused damage along the Donegal coast – and this road has been washed away as the sea surge sent tonnes of beach stones inland.

Photographer John McCandless took these pictures on Saturday evening on what is left of a coast road at Kilourt, Malin Head.

“This road is part of the Inishowen 100 scenic drive and is now covered in stones and in some places the road has been torn up by the sea,” said John.

This is the worst damage to the road in living memory.

Storm Brigid, accompanied by a high spring tide, sent coastal waters crashing ashore in many areas of the county.

The worst of this weather system is over, says Met Eireann, with the Orange alert now lifted.

However more wet and windy weather is already being forecast for later this week.

Sunday rainfall amounts of up to 30mm are expected.

Winds will increase to around 80km/hr on Monday before another storm arrives on Tuesday bringing winds of more than 110km/hr.

This storm will peak overnight then subside on Wednesday morning. Rainfalls of about 20 mm, spot flooding likely as ground saturated from previous events.
