The government is set to consider designating a new Bank Holiday in the New Year.

The extra holiday is being discussed as a way to support the tourism and hospitality industry and to recognise the huge efforts of the Irish population in 2020.

The Taoiseach Micheál Martin said: “I think that is one potential, yes, that we could do in terms of reflecting and acknowledging the work of many workers in different fields and in different sectors.

“We’ll consider it.”

The date of the new Bank Holiday, the Taoiseach has said, could be set for a time when it’s “safe to begin to do some normal things again.”

The tourism sector suffered major losses during 2020 when restrictions were set over Bank Holidays throughout the year.
