Family Resource Centre

Raphoe Family Resource Centre would like to welcome Lucy Gibbons to the project. Boxing gloves

Lucy, who hails from Buncrana but who has family in Raphoe is volunteering with the after-school programme on Thursdays and we are delighted that Lucy has selected the Family Resource Centre as the location for her volunteering experience.

We would also like to welcome back Ann Marie Doran Roulstone who is Lucy’s Support Worker.

Ann Marie is no stranger to the project as she has undertaken student placement, volunteered and covered Maternity Leave with us and we are so pleased to have her back among us.

A warm welcome back to Joe Porter who will be with us for two weeks to put together a ‘walking guide’ of Raphoe for people with dementia as part of a proposed initiative the Family Resource Centre is to deliver in association with Dementia Aware Donegal (DAD).

We look forward to working with all three over the next weeks and months.

Euro watchers

The Raphoe Family Resource centre in association with Donegal Education and training Board is hosting the popular Eurowatchers Programme commencing on the 17th from 10am to 12.00pm February 2014.

Eurowatchers is a money advice programme developed by Co. Donegal VEC and MABS. The programme supports the development of budgeting skills and techniques, including ideas on curtailing spending, making some saving and best approaches to credit.

Eurowatchers is developed over 6 weeks (2 hours per week).While there are opportunities for discussion and sharing there is no obligation to discuss personal situations.

Case studies are provided and the course is delivered in a relaxed and enjoyable manner.

Content is as follows:

Week 1: setting the scene

Week 2: money go round

Week 3: budgeting

Week 4: paying bills

Week 5: savings

Week 6: credit trail

Raphoe Women’s Group Switch & Ditch evening

The Raphoe women’s group are giving you the opportunity to bring along your unwanted clothes, accessories or those unwanted xmas pressies that you want to switch for others’ unwanted good clothing/items (no bra or undies)

Held at the Raphoe Family Resource centre on the 10th March 2014 8.00pm sharp! Admission 2 euro per person. So for a night to meet up with friends, enjoy some nibbles and leave with a new outfit, It really is a night not to be missed!!!!

Youth Conference on Young People’s Health & Well-being

Would you like the opportunity to take part in an exciting programme aimed at 16-22 year olds?

Be part of a local initiative to help identify the issues that have an impact on mental health in young people aged between 16-22.

The programme will consist of workshops followed by a half day conference, meal and night of music in The Inishowen Gateway Hotel Buncrana on Friday 23rd may 2014.

Workshops will be held in:

St Johnston & Carrigans Resource Centre-Thursday 13th February 7.30-9pm (old play Group)

Thursday 6th March from 7.30-9pm

Parents plus programme

A practical & positive guide to parenting children

Topics include: Being a responsive parent, Encouraging and supporting children, Promoting children’s language and development, Helping children concentrate and learn, Building co- operation in young children, Managing tantrums, misbehaviour and problems.

This programme will commence March 2014 (Date to be confirmed)

Wednesday Mornings from 10am – 12noon programme is free of charge

Raphoe Walking Group:

The Raphoe Walking Group meets every Thursday at 10.30am in the Family Resource Centre. Everyone is welcome, this is a brilliant opportunity to get fit and meet new people in your community.

Little Explorers Parent & Toddler Group

Parent and Toddler Group is an activity which allows Parents / guardians to attend a session which looks at different activities to promote learning and fun for children aged 0-4 years.

Children will avail of a variety of activities which support their physical, social and emotional development as well as promoting their language development.

Parent and Toddler also give parent / guardians the opportunity to socialize and meet up in a warm caring stimulating environment.

The activities on offer at Little Explorers are: Arts & Crafts, Physical Play, Circle and Rhyme Time & Information sessions for parents.

Parents are provided with a healthy snack!!!! The Parent and toddler session runs every Tuesday morning from 11.00am – 12.30pm. Why not come along and have some fun!!!

Raphoe Boxing Club

Congratulations goes to the club’s female king pin Nurse Caroline Connolly who was crowned Ulster Elite Champion for the forth time at the championship finals held in the Europa Hotel Belfast on Friday night last. Well done Caroline from everyone at the club.

Friday night last was a very busy night for the Raphoe club with 7 boxers in action at a major tournament in the St. John Bosco Centre Donegal Town. Euan

Quinn, Liam Lynch, Liam McMonagle and the McDaid brothers Ryan and Aaron all turned in very good performances against top quality oppossion.

In the cruiser weight division Gerard Crawford had a convincing points win over Jack Devlin and at light middle weight Danny Duggan was red hot on the night when he out pointed home town favourite Johnny Shields in what was to be a very absorbing contest

Donegal Fibromyalgia Support Group. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition with many more symptoms besides.

Monthly meetings start again in February Wed 5th in St. Conals, Letterkenny from 7pm to 8.30pm. Its in the coffee dock beside the library via the rehab entrance, but I always wait at front door in purple fibro fleece to show folk where to.

Friday 7th is in Milbrae Health Centre, Stranorlar, from 6.30 to 8.30pm. February we will have a guest speaker from University of Limerick.

As an Occupational Therapist she is involved with providing a multi-strand programme to those with fibro and or arthritis in the border regions, who are on social welfare.

Even if you are not on welfare, she will be also giving self help tips on day to day matters. Everyone is welcome.

Both venues run monthly – Letterkenny 1st Wednesday & Stranorlar 1st Friday of each month except August & January.

New members are always welcome, whether patients of fibro or family members. Refreshments are provided and information leaflets.

A voluntary contribution is welcome. Meetings are also run in Cardonagh in coordination with the Arthritis Group – contact for more info.

Secondly – Our big event going on this month: Donegal are part of a Nationwide Awareness Campaign by making a Massive quilt with the fibro colour purple / butterfly / ribbon theme.

Calling all crafters to make 12 x 12 inch squares of quilt / crochet / knit ANYTHING by the end of February to be put together for the International Awareness Day on May 12th.

Even if you don’t do the above, maybe you know someone who does, or make a felt butterfly or even donate material towards the quilt. Everything welcome.
