Derry City FC have received criticism by representatives from the PFAI following their decision to play a pre-season friendly in Belfast on the day of the event.
With the exception of Kevin Deery and Barry Molloy none of the current Derry City management and playing staff were in attendance at the event.
The event was organised to help raise funds for Mark Farren the former Derry City striker who is currently receiving preventative radiotherapy treatment for a brain tumour.
Farren scored 113 goals for Derry City in over 200 games in a stunning career, however many in attendance were appalled by the Derry’s decision to organize a friendly on a day when the North-West footballing fraternity came out to show their support for Farren.
PFAI representative Stephen McGuinness was surprised and disappointed by Derry’s decision not to attend the event.
“It’s very disappointing they had something else on today but that’s their decision but I think it was a very poor one.
His sentiments were echoed by PFAI colleague Ollie Cahill and Finn Harps captain Kevin McHugh who organised the event.
“The event has been a massive success and we’re overwhelmed with the crowd that turned up on Saturday.
“The day was a total success and Mark and his family were overwhelmed by the genuine support by the people in attendance.
“He’s a real genuine good lad and everyone is willing him to pull through and come out the other end.
“I know football is a fickle business, and your only a number at the end of the day, but for Derry City to arrange a friendly on the same day, wasn’t the brightest idea they’ve ever had.
“I’m sure Derry will make up for that in the coming months, as Mark is one of their all time greats and has good time for Derry City and their fans.
