Burtonport fishermen have called a meeting in O'Donnell's bar tonight to discuss the future of fishing in the area.

Burtonport fishermen have called a meeting in O’Donnell’s bar tonight to discuss the future of fishing in the area.

The meeting is open to anyone past or present that has been involved in fishing or for those who wish to get involved in the industry in the future.

The meeting will take place tonight at 8pm in O’Donnell’s Bar Burtonport known locally as Jimmy Johnny’s.

Every fisherman from Arranmore to Bunbeg has been encouraged to attend and express their views on how they can improve the fishing industry in the locality.

Burtonport was once a vibrant fishing port and one of the busiest fishing villages in Ireland.

However it was decimated due to harsh fishing quotas and is now just a shadow of what it used to be, with very few boats fishing out of the pier.

The closure of the major factories on the pier led to significant job losses and had a knock on effect with two pubs and two shops having closed since the jobs left the port.

It’s hoped that it can be returned to it’s former glory and anyone that has a passion for fishing is urged to attend tonight’s meeting.
