The eagerly anticipated Lord of the Ring 5 ‘The Rematch’ is taking place on Friday March the 14th and Donegal Daily will be regularly profiling the boxers on show.

Today we look at the profiles of three other competitors that will take part on the big night.

Name: Kevin “Wham Bam” Durran

Occupation: Nurse

Boxing Style: Big Hitter  Kevin

A serious athlete and one most will want to avoid as at 109Kgs Durran is at the top end of this year’s roster of participants.

The rugby veteran (at 23!!!) boxed in last year’s event and came back for more. A crafty one, he protests his fitness isn’t what it should be – on observing training we beg to differ.

His dedication to Liverpool FC, who he is often to be seen following in the Downtown Bar, might explain why he enjoys the hellish training so much.

Citing last year’s event – he’s been there, did it and did it well. Durran is the man to beat so far this year!

Name: Niall “Give ‘Em Hell” Doherty

Occupation: Chartered Tax Consultant

Boxing Style: Big Hitter  Niall

“Coerced by Paul Carr” into taking part, Doherty is not one for pulling punches and with “no time for wafflers or time wasters” he’ll have plenty of opportunity to vent his frustrations on them over the coming weeks in training.

His sporting hero is a man never accused of being a waster, his Hawthorn Heights neighbour – “John Haran and his ‘seven county medals!’”.

Sporting achievements include a sub-two minute 800m race, as well as an All-Ireland bronze in the 3x800m.

A Donegal fan, his major fear for the night apart from ‘making a clown of himself’ is that he would ‘embarrass the sporting elite of Hawthorn Heights that came before him where Haran ‘ranks himself u there with the very best!’.

Name: Pauric “The Eliminator” McGinley

Occupation: Mac’s Deli, Letterkenny

Boxing Style: Speed Machine    Pauric

Recognisable from calling the shots in “Eunan Mac’s”, McGinley has the family’s backing and is enjoying getting stuck in to the boxing training.

Whilst unfair to describe his participation as a long-term dream being realised, Pauric has faced greater challenges as both a dedicated motor sport and cycling competitor.

Already fit and with good height McGinley’s long reach and good speed are the standout characteristics to watch out for any opponent.

Don’t be fooled by the man that speaks softly this fella is the darkest horse so far this year in training!
