Donegal County Council has been granted €81,000 to support a range of capital works on our offshore islands.

The projects include road resurfacing and, repair works to various island piers and the helipad on Toraigh.

The highest allocation in Donegal goes to repairs to the pier wall and protective wall of slipway at Inishsirrer. Further investment is being made into road resurfacing on Owey.

Donegal County Council will provide co-funding for these works.

Announcing the funding on Monday, Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, said:

“The Government’s policy for rural development, Our Rural Future, commits to investing in critical infrastructure throughout rural Ireland, including our offshore islands.”

“I am therefore delighted today to announce this funding today for small capital projects on islands off Cork, Galway, Mayo and Donegal.”

“The funding will allow the relevant Local Authorities to undertake improvement works on the islands. These improvements will greatly benefit these communities, as well as those visiting these beautiful locations.”

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit Bere Island, Inis Oirr and Inis Meain in recent weeks and I look forward to visiting more of our islands over the coming months. Our islands are an integral part of the State’s heritage and hold a wealth of cultural tradition.

“This funding is in addition to €1.1million in funding I announced in May and further demonstrate the Government’s commitment to supporting our island communities.”
