Donegal TD Joe McHugh has said he may consider leaving Fine Gael if the government does not support homeowners with adequate Mica redress.

The deputy could reconsider his position in the party if the enhanced scheme continues to leave out families.

McHugh TD told the Irish Independent that the last scheme was ruined by ‘nit-picking’ and not delivering on 100% redress.

An enhanced redress scheme was discussed last night at meeting between the Coalition party leaders, Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien, Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and Minister for Public Expenditure Michael McGrath.

Homeowners were hoping to get answers on a finalised scheme by 9th November, but decisions have been pushed back by another fortnight.

McHugh TD has warned the government to be vigilant over the details of a new scheme.

“I feel there is a very real danger that history is going to repeat itself. If there is nit-picking on this scheme, we are back to a half-baked scheme again and it is not going to work,” he told the Independent.

“Ultimately my message is, if fairness is not at the heart of the scheme this time, I won’t be supporting it.”
