DON’T forget the interesting lecture on the theme of ‘place names’ in the Oaktree Community Centre, tonight (Friday, February 8th) at 8 pm sharp.
Dr Seosamh Mac Muirí will be giving the bilingual lecture on place names in Donaghmore parish, entitled ‘Súil Choimhthíoch ar Ard na gCanach agus ar An Trosc – Casting a Cold Eye on Domhnach Mór Place Names.’
On the night, Mr Mac Muirí will explore the ‘real me…aning’ behind some local place names like Avaltygort, Carricknamana, Meenreagh and so on.
He will also point to the application of some basic rules of Irish place name study to the names of the area, while drawing comparisons with other parts of the county and the country.
The lecture will give a better understanding and, of course, an increased appreciation of the heritage of the local place names.
The free event is being organised by CAKE.
Light refreshments will be served and a raffle will held for a number of spot prizes.
