GOLF NEWS: ANN GILLESPIE WINS THE MAGEE OF DONEGAL COMPETITION AT MURVAGH

Ladies Competitions

Magee of Donegal-20th & 22nd April

Ann Gillespie proved that her sabbatical last year did her golf no harm, by winning the Magee of Donegal sponsored competition at the weekend and reducing her handicap.

She had 3 pts to spare over Miriam Bennett who returned 35pts. Maureen Childs was 3rd on a break of tie from Crona O’Reilly, both of whom had 34pts.

The National Breast Cancer Research Institute charity competition was won by Audrey Johnson who had 21pts

The Donegal Shield was held on Saturday 26th with 139 players from 16 clubs from the County competing.

The players were impressed with the organization, the course and the catering on the day and thanks is due to Mary Farragher Lady Captain and her team for a well orchestrated event.

Unfortunately, our own team did not feature among the winners.

Congratulations to Bundoran who won the Shield with 101pts – Josephine McGurran 37pts, Bernie Gillespie 36pts and Kathleen Connolly 28pts. Runners up were Ballybofey/Stranorlar with 100pts – Margaret Hynes 35pts, Josephine Stewart 35pts and Dolores Devanney 30pts. In 3rd place on a break of tie from Rosapenna were North West with 99pts – Roisin Williamson 36pts, Ann O’Neill 32pts and Marian Cassidy 31pts.

The Miele Team – with 2 fourball matches at home and 2 matches away – were the winners against BlackLion on Sunday.

The team were Dorothy Woods & Miriam Bennett, Geraldine Gorman & Mary McGonigle, Norma Mullooly & Bernie Finn and Helen O’Shea & Mary Walsh.

Good Luck to our Intermediate team who play Bundoran on Saturday.

9 hole Club Mixed

The Friday 9 hole mixed recommence on Friday 2nd May with a draw from 5.45 to 6.15.

Men’s Competitions:

Marius J Monaghan won the Sunday competition Sponsored by Supervalu with 42pts. Declan McKeever followed in 2nd with 40pts with Dave Barr taking 3rd place ahead of Larry Walsh. Enda Campbell won the Gross.

Eamonn Duffy led the way in the Friday Open on the 25th of April from Bernard O’Donnell and Raymond McGirr. Jason Conway added to his recent list of Gross wins.

Thursday Specials:

Once again the weather was perfect for our first 15 hole competition and there was an excellent turnout with 57 players playing.

The winner for a second week in a row with an exceptional score of 36pts was Liam Farren, another man in form James Cassidy claimed 2nd place for the third time in four week’s with 35pts on a break of tie from Adrian Murray in 3rd place also with 35pts and Frank O’Donnell was 4th with 33pts.

The prize for the 1st9 went to our former Chairman Martin Quinn with 22pts and Michael ‘D’ Gallagher was the best of the past players with an exceptional score of 36pts.

Entry sheet for the Phoenix Cup is on the notice board in the locker room and the draw will be made on the 8th May.

We had our first away trip of the year to Narin and Portnoo Golf Club on Saturday 26th April, 28 players travelled and a very enjoyable day was had by all.

Breaking from the tradition that was the recent dominance of a certain Sunday four ball in our spring away trip, the winner with 37pts was Barry Kennedy followed closely by the Mundy brothers; Kevin Mundy was 2nd with 36pts and Liam Mundy in 3rd place with 35pts.

Colm Campbell claimed the prize for the front nine with 20pts on a break of tie and Mark Butler won the back nine with 20pts.

Liam Farren was for nearest the pin on 16th and Conor McNulty had the longest drive on the 18th.

Thanks to our all at Narin and Portnoo Golf Club who provided a warm welcome and excellent service for the duration of our visit.
