Ballyshannon houseExclusive: Donegal Gardai investigating death threats against a councillor have interviewed a suspect, Donegal Daily can reveal.

It comes after a fire which destroyed a house at Parkhill outside Ballyshannon earlier this week.

A Garda spokesman would only say that officers are investigating what they called a ‘threatening mail’ received by a local representative.

It’s understood the councillor received a package to his home which he found ‘extremely upsetting.’

Donegal Daily can reveal a man has been interviewed in relation to the incident and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Cllr Sean McEniff has been under huge pressure since objecting to the €230,000 house being bought by the council to house a Traveller family of 12.

He had condemned those behind the arson attack; but he has refused to withdraw comments in which he said Travellers should be housed together.

However Cllr McEniff says he was NOT the councillor who received any threats.

The latest development comes as national attention continues to highlight attitudes towards Travellers in Co Donegal.
