Derry on high alert following threat

Derry has been put on high alert following a warning that dissident republicans may attempt to launch gun or bomb attacks today.

A major policing operation is to be mounted following a Police Service of Northern Ireland warning about the threat.

An Easter commemoration parade is being held in the Creggan area of the city this afternoon by Saoradh, regarded as the political wing of the New IRA.

Police said it had strong intelligence information that the New IRA is planning to organise public disorder in an attempt to lure officers into a trap.

The PSNI fears the fact that, as today marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, it may act as an additional incentive for the dissident republican group which is opposed to the deal.

Last night, the local police commander warned that as the parade has not been notified to the Northern Ireland Parades Commission, anyone taking part will commit a criminal offence.

“It is our intention to police this event proportionately on the day. However, if this event isn’t notified that will require a larger police presence and operation than had this event been notified and legal,” said Chief Superintendent Nigel Goddard.

“An evidence gathering operation will be in place, after which we will review any evidence gathered to identify any offences that might be committed.”
