GARDAI, ambulance personnel and nurses from Co Donegal were among more than 4,000 frontline public service workers who warned the Government tonight they will not allow €1Bn of cuts to their pay.
The 24-7 Frontline Alliance boasts garda sergeants and inspectors among its members. It has 70,000 members nationwide.
The crowd in Tallaght in Dublin backed calls from speakers that they will oppose cuts to special payments for working weekends and night shifts.
Seamus Murphy of the Psychiatric Nurses’ Association warned: ”They need to be careful. Do you remember what happened to the last crowd that cut our pay?”
He told the crowds that “in 1913 we had a lockout, in 2013 we have a sellout”.
Garda Representative Association General Secretary PJ Stone warned the Taoiseach Enda Kenny that workers will not continue to deliver public services for the “miserable miserly wage you think you can negotiate in the Croke Park talks.”
Gardai will stop doing all voluntary work from this Friday, will not use their own cars or own mobile phones while on duty.
Some Donegal Gardai want a week-long Blue Flu which would see the Army brought out.
The huge and noisy crowd in Dublin chanted “no more cuts” at the end of the rally.
