Thousands of students gathered in Galway yesterday with many sporting Donegal jerseys as has become custom.

However Gardai said the night passed off relatively peacefully and there were no repeats of the widespread disruption of a year ago.

There were ten arrests in total.

President of NUI Galway Students’ Union Paul Curley said he is confident none of those arrested are Galway students.

However he admitted that he had monitored social media and suggested busloads of students had been traveling from Letterkenny and other towns to take part in the boozing sessions.

“I’ve seen on Facebook that people from all around the country are coming to Galway for this. There are supposed to be buses coming from Letterkenny, Kildare, Limerick and Athlone,” he said.

“Of course it worries me, but it’s got nothing to do with the students’ union or the university.”

He added that he had not received any complaints for residents yet.

Students began queuing from as early as 10am yesterday to gather at various pubs around Galway city including The Hoel In The Wall bar.
