The house at the centre of the Ballyshannon controversy has NOT been bought by the county council
Members of groups which represent travelers in Donegal will meet with Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin today to discuss recent comments by councillor Sean McEniff.
The Bundoran county councillor claimed that members of the Traveling community should be isolated from mainstream society.
He made his comments after it was revealed that a house in Parkhill, Ballyshannon had been secured for a Traveller family of 12 people.
The house was subsequently firebombed and is the subject of a Garda investigation.
Hugh Friel of the Donegal Travelers Project will meet with the Fianna Fail leader to discuss the matter.
The group have described councillor McEniff’s comments as racist.
Fianna Fail moved quickly to remove themselves from Colr McEniff’s comments saying they were made in a personal capacity.
However it is understood the DTP are keen to make a formal complaint to Fianna Fail about Colr McEniff and his refusal to withdraw the comments.
Meanwhile County Manager Seamus Neely is today expected to make an official statement on the council’s position on the purchase of the house at Parkhill.
Donegal Daily reported yesterday how the council had not signed the contract for the €230,000 house before it was destroyed in the blaze on February 11th.
We revealed how the council has been given legal advice that they had not purchased the house before it was substantially damaged.
The County Manager is expected to outline the situation under Manger’s Orders at today meeting of the council in Lifford.
