LYIT progressed to the semi finals of the All Ireland Umbro cup after a convincing display seen them defeat an out of sorts GMIT side 4-1.
Niall McGonagle’s charges lined up for this clash without Derry City star Barry MacNamee and Finn Harps goalkeeper Ciaran Gallagher. However they had more than enough in reserve to overcome the limp test afforded to them by the men from the west.
LYIT gained control of this match early on with Finn Harps player Josh Mailey impressing in a central midfield role alongside Harps u19 player Ryan Curran. With the home side on top an early goal was inevitable and it came from another Finn Harps player Jordan Duffy, this was followed in quick succession with goals from Dean Bonner and Derry City bound Anthony Appiah. GMIT Castlebar did respond before half time but Ryan Curran sealed the game with a stunning 25 yard effort from outside the box that sailed straight into the top corner.
Niall McGonagle’s men now face Carlow IT in the semi final. That Game will be played on Tuesday the 5th of March.
