A member of An Garda Síochána has been suspended from duty following a fatal hit-and-run incident in Drogheda, Co Louth.

An inquiry is underway into the alleged actions of an off-duty Garda member in relation to the incident involving a car and a pedestrian.

The victim has been named as Niall McEneaney, a former Louth hurling player and manager aged in his 40s.

Mr McEneaney suffered fatal injuries following the collision shortly after 2.30am on St Patrick’s day. The vehicle involved had failed to remain at the scene.

A vehicle of interest was later recovered and will undergo a technical and forensic examination.

It’s been confirmed that the official garda car was not involved in the incident, nor was any on-duty Garda member.

The incident has been referred to the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (Gsoc), which is investigating the crash.
