A total of 11 people were arrested across Donegal on suspicion of driving while intoxicated over the St Patrick’s Bank Holiday Weekend.

The arrests come following a high-profile safety campaign mounted by local Gardai.

The campaign was launched in at Drumbarnett in Manorcunningham on Saturday morning last at 11am.

Among the 11 people arrested was a driver who was stopped at the road safety launch just after 11am in the morning.

Head of the Donegal Traffic Corops, Garda Inspector Seamus McGonigle warned that a number of Mandatory Intoxicant Checkpoints would be set up across the county.

These are checkpoints which can be ordered by a member of An Garda Siochana of the rank of at least Garda Inspector.

Drivers stopped at these checkpoints can be tested even if Gardai have not formed the opinion that they are over the drink or drug driving limit.

Nationwide, a total of 1,800 drivers were detected speeding over the St Patrick’s Bank Holiday Weekend.

Among them was a driver travelling at 147km/h in a 60km/h zone in Cookstown in Dublin.

There are no figures available yet on the number of drivers detected speeding during the Bank Holiday period.
