The body of a missing fisherman was recovered off the coast of Galway last night.

The man, aged in his 50s, was recovered from the water after being reported missing near Inishbofin island.

Malin Head Coast Guard was alerted by radio shortly at approx 10.15pm on Wednesday evening that a fisherman was overdue and presumed missing.

It’s reported that his boat had not returned to shore for two days.

The station initiated a search in the area of Inishbofin involving Coast Guard rescue helicopter R118 and lifeboats from Clifden RNLI.

Rescue 118 later confirmed the discovery of a body, found by local community members on the northern shore of the island, shortly before midnight.

A garda spokesperson said the body has since been removed to the mortuary in University Hospital Galway where a post mortem will take place in due course. A file will be prepared for the Coroner’s Court.
