Planning permission has been granted to construct Donegal’s first crematorium in Letterkenny.

Funeral business owner Michael Morning has been granted permission to build the facility within a proposed new funeral home at Carnamuggagh.

It is envisaged that up to 500 cremations per year will take place at the site.

Mr Morning’s application said it made “perfect sense” to supply a crematorium in Donegal’s main town of Letterkenny, as at present, funeral undertakers have to travel to Cavan to avail of a crematorium, and there is a rise in the number of people requesting to be cremated.

The facility’s proximity to Letterkenny University Hospital and the new Community Hospital was also noted.

Planning permission was granted by Donegal County Council on 20 conditions.

Among the conditions is that specific hours of operation will apply – 09:30 to 18:00, Monday to Sunday – and that there will be air quality monitoring and assessment along with noise and odour management.

In a further information request, the applicant said that the funeral home and crematorium are intended to be purposely built so that those using the crematorium will have to use the funeral home. The funeral home, which already has planning permission, has capacity for 60 car park spaces.
