Doagh Famine Village, one of Donegal’s most iconic tourist attractions, has been severely damaged in a massive fire.
The blaze, which broke out this afternoon, caused extensive destruction, gutting many of the site’s historic thatched cottages.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but reports from the scene confirm widespread damage to the historic buildings, some of which were original dwellings that were occupied until 1983 by the family of owner Pat Doherty.
The popular family-run museum, which offers visitors a unique insight into Irish life from the 18th century through to recent times, has announced its immediate closure.
A notice to customers reads: “Due to circumstances outside of our control Doagh Famine Village will be closed until further notice.”
