THE Northern Lights have made a spectacular return to Co Donegal overnight.
Buncrana Camera Club stalwart Adam Rory Porter was once again in the right place to catch these stunning images over Inishowen for Donegal Daily.
“The photos were taken from the Mamore Gap in Inishowen looking down into Urris.
“There’s a beautiful Holy Well and Grotto to our Lady on the Gap, plus a statue of Padre Pio. A fine spot day or night. You can see the fog covered Leenan and Urris below with the orange glow of streetlights and houses peeking through.”
Experts had predicted the return of the Aurora Borealis, with conditions improving in recent days.
The sun that lies behind the formation of the auroras. During large solar explosions and flares, huge quantities of particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space.
When the particles meet the Earth’s magnetic shield, they are led towards a circle around the magnetic North Pole, where they interact with the upper layers of the atmosphere. The energy which is then released is the northern lights. All this happens approximatelty 100 kilometres above our heads.
People reported seeing the faint green lights on the horizon all along the Donegal coast last night.
