INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Every year on 8th March, the world celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD provides a common day for globally recognising and applauding women’s achievements as well as observing and highlighting gender issues and inequalities. This year on Friday 8th March from 10.30am – 12.30pm the Raphoe Family Resource Centre will mark International Women’s Day with an exhibition of work carried out by local artists and the classes of St. Eunan’s and the Central National Schools. The work produced is aimed at celebrating and honouring women both locally and internationally. Tea/Coffee and light refreshments will be provided.

“FIT FOR LIFE”

The aim of this free 5 week programme is to develop a safe space for young people between 12-15 years of age where they will learn more about the issues which are affecting or may affect their life. Objectives of the programme include raising young people’s self-esteem, developing understanding of the complexity of feelings and the ability to manage them more effectively, enabling young people with knowledge about physical and emotional health and developing coping strategies for dealing with issues affecting their physical and emotional health. Through the programme it is anticipated that young people will recognize the relationship between thoughts, feelings and actions, appreciate differences in how people feel about things, being able to talk about feelings effectively, examine their actions and know their consequences, use “I” messages instead of “You”, which will help young people blame less and take responsibility for their role within relationships.

Week 1 will focus on Physical Health-the dangers of smoking; Week 2-Emotional Health: Anti-bullying and Peer Pressure; Week 3-Physical Health: Alcohol and Drugs; Week 4-Emotional Health: Friendships and Relationships; Week 5-Physical Health: Stress and Anger Management.

The programme starts on Wednesday 13th March at 7.00pm followed at 8pm by the usual Youth Cafe activities. For further information please contact any of the Youth Team on 074 9145796.

THE EXCHANGE PROJECT

The Family Resource Centre has been invited by the Playhouse in Derry to participate in an exciting cross-border and cross-community youth project for young people aged between 12 and 16 years of age.

Up to 150 young people from 5 youth projects in Donegal and 5 in Derry will be involved in developing a Urban Arts Project in each of their areas as well as each project ‘twinning’ with a project on a cross-border basis. The young people themselves will decide on their own Urban Arts Project, whether that might be animation, D-Jaying, mural painting, production of a DVD or a drama sketch.

A field trip to each of the community projects will take place at the end to celebrate the achievements.

The Exchange Project commences in March when youth leaders will undertake 30 hours of community arts training, followed by 8 weeks of contact time in each project with a professional community arts practitioner during April and May. In July the cross-border partnership work will take place while in August a 4 day Urban Arts Project will be developed with all 150 young people participating in the one location with the celebratory field trip taking place in September.
