SIMMERING tensions between Fianna Fail and Mayor Frank McBrearty have continued with the county’s biggest party refusing to take up their place on the New York St Patrick’s Day trip.
Fianna Fail were entitled to send one of their party councillors to accompany the Mayor on the week-long trip later this week.
However when Fianna Fail met to discuss who would accompany the Mayor, none of their councillors wanted to go.
There have been several bust-ups between Mayor McBrearty and members of Fianna Fail in the council chamber in Lifford in recent months.
At a meeting last month – which was held behind closed doors – councillors could be heard shouting at each other from outside the corridor.
At the Fianna Fail meeting to select who would go on the €24k trip, all the party’s representative declined the offer.
