Donegal born boxer Joseph Duffy has made the transition from mixed martial arts to professional boxing seem an easy one.
Duffy recorded his second victory in a week as he overcame the experienced Paul Morby courtesy of a 2nd round KO. Duffy won his professional debut seven days previous against Angelo Crowe in Swansea. Duffy was awarded the victory on points.
Duffy’s story however is somewhat different to that of the professional boxers he will face in his career. Duffy was a professional cage fighter but decided to give boxing a go despite having no previous boxing experience after being told by John Tandy he had potential to go a long way in boxing.
Duffy was destined it seemed to become a major star of the ever growing popular MMA(Mixed Martial Arts) franchise with the UFC now one of the most watched sports in America.
Duffy won his first 10 professional MMA Bouts and was touted to be the next big thing from this side of the Atlantic to break into the UFC scene in America. However fate has chose a different path for Duffy.
Duffy fought for a vacant title in cage warriors but sustained a broken hand in a bout he dominated against Ivan Gusardo. Duffy had planned to move to America and was training in the MMA clinic in London, but it was there he met Tandy who suggested he give professional boxing a go.
Duffy is from Meenbannad beside Burtonport and has always been a hugely popular person with locals who have followed his career with interest.
Friends of Duffy from Burtonport have regularly travelled over to support Duffy over the years and will continue to do so as he makes his way through the boxing ranks.
In fact many of Duffy’s closest friends from Burtonport now work in London and were there to cheer him on to victory on Saturday night.
Duffy is very proud of his Irish and Donegal heritage and has a tattoo of Dun na ngall on his back. He is already gaining a large following of support from fight fans based all over Ireland as well as in Wales were Duffy grew up
Duffy is in action again on March the 23rd at the Camden Centre in King’s cross London. Duffy’s opponent has yet to be announced.
One thing is for sure the name Joseph Duffy is not going to go away. 2013 is going to be a big year for Donegal’s Meenbannad Mauler.
