The county finals of the primary schools sports hall athletics proved to be a very exciting, fun and up-tempo occasion with close on 600 children participating in twelve different athletic disciplines in a team format.
The Aura Sports Centre, Letterkenny was a hive of activity with schools representing four regions of the county gave their all with some outstanding performances in all four categories of 3/4th class girls, 3/4th class boys, 5/6th class girls and 5/6th class boys.
The overall scoring was keen right up until the last two events and when the final scores were announced the following schools came out on top.
In the Girls 3/4th Class category, Scoil Colmcille, Kilmacrennan with a total of 96 points were the winners followed by Scoil Iosagain from Buncrana on 83 points.
In the Boys 3/4th Class category Scoil Colmcille , Letterkenny with a total of 106 points were winners followed by Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana on 100 points.
In the final two categories of 5/6th class boys and 5/6th class girls Scoil Iosagain, Buncrana did the double winning the girls section with 98 points followed by SN Naomh Dúigh, Annagry on 88, in the boys category they were convincing winners with 124 points followed by Scoil Colmcille , Letterkenny on 108points.
This is the second year of the primary schools sports hall athletics in Donegal and great credit is due to everyone who supported the regional events at local level and the county finals in the Aura on Friday 8th March.
Donegal Sports Partnership and Athletics Ireland are the driving force behind the coordination of the programme which started back in November 2012 with a teacher / coach training workshops across the county.
The Donegal Athletics Board and the local clubs are also to be congratulated for their support at local level and for the county final and also the Letterkenny Institute of Technology and the TY group in Abbey College, Donegal Town who provided students from their sports programmes to work as officials at local and county final events.
The winning teams now go forward to represent Donegal at the national semi finals at IT Sligo on Thursday 14th March with the National Finals scheduled for the 21st March in IT Athlone.
