All Ireland Champions Donegal will get there crucial league match against Cork off to a flier after it was confirmed they will get a chartered plane to fly them South for their National league clash on Saturday evening.

The Donegal county board have agreed to charter a plane for the team to save them two long bus journeys and an overnight stay for the match.

Jim McGuinness’s team will depart Donegal airport in Carrickfinn at 10 am on Saturday and will return 12 hours later.

If the team didn’t fly down to Cork it would mean they would have to depart Donegal by bus on Friday evening and have two overnight stays before returning home by bus Sunday morning.

Donegal spokesman Aodh Mairtin O Fearraigh told the Irish Star there was a player welfare issue involved in the decision, another reason suggested for chartering the plane was to have the squad back on Saturday night leaving them free to enjoy St.Patrick’s Day at home with family and friends.

The trip by bus would have cost somewhere in the region of €8,000 when meals and hotels were taken into account.

Chartering a plane for such a journey normally cost €10,000 but it is believed Donegal airport covered some of this.

The Donegal – Cork match is part of an Allianz league double header on Saturday. The rebels put the football on first at 5pm to allow the Donegal team to make their flight home. While the Cork hurlers face Clare at 7pm.
