Donegal Sinn Féin representatives have today announced details of upcoming local initiatives to abolish the property tax.
Donegal North East TD Pádraig Mac Lochlainn was joined by Cllrs Jack Murray, Mick Quinn and Gerry McMonagle as they outlined plans to gather petitions and deliver thousands of leaflets throughout the county.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn said;
“This tax on the family home is unjust, unfair and should be scrapped. It takes no account of ability to pay, mortgages, stamp duty paid or negative equity.”
“It will further dampen the property market, at a time when some recovery is needed, and it will be difficult to assess and pay for both citizens and the Revenue Commissioners alike.”
“As such Donegal Sinn Féin activists will be distributing tens of thousands of leaflets throughout the county in order to build support for our bill which will be going through the Oireachts to repeal the property tax”.
“We will also be engaging with the public in towns across Donegal and asking them to sign a petition to put pressure on the government to withdraw from the unnecessary and cruel path.”
“We are saying, quite clearly that there is a choice for the government and we are calling on the Taoiseach to scrap this tax and instead introduce a 1% wealth tax on all net assets in excess of €1 million excluding working farmland, business assets and pension pots.”
“It is time that the wealthiest in society started paying their fair share. It is time that ordinary hard-working people got a break.”
