DONEGAL NEEDS EXTENSION TO FODDER TRANSPORT SCHEME – McGOWAN

Finn Valley Councillor Patrick McGowan said pressure must be put on Government to extend the Fodder Transport Scheme for the North-West where growth is much slower than rest of the country.FARMING

“Farmers in Donegal and the North-West continue to struggle with the fodder crisis, which is still causing huge distress,” he said.

He added Minister Coveney needs to visit Donegal and see for himself and to extend the fodder transport scheme for a further two weeks at least, which should be reviewed on a weekly basis after that.

“Under the exceptional circumstances being experienced by farmers, the Minister needs to come up with a package of aid for farmers, unfortunately there is more unsettled weather forecast for next week.

“We need to see more direction and leadership from the Minister on this.

“The fodder crisis is not over and there now needs to be more forward planning for next year because there will be long term consequences following this present crises and there is every chance we could have a similar crisis in 2014,” said Cllr Mc Gowan.

GAA: DONEGAL HURLERS THROUGH TO NICKY RACKARD CUP FINAL AFTER O’DONNELL PARK WIN

donegal gaa logoDONEGAL’S hurlers are through to another All-Ireland Final after a fine win over Monaghan at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny today.

They will play Roscommon in the final at Croke Park in two weeks’ time after the Rossies overcame Tyrone in the other semi-final on Saturday.

Lee Henderson was Donegal’s hero as they claimed a 5-12 to 2-9 win over their fellow Ulstermen.

The Sean MacCumhaills clubman came back from injury and hit 2-03 after coming on in the second half. And it was a game-changer,

Monaghan had led by 2-05 to 1-05 at half-time.

But Donegal worked hard and with Henderson in top form, they overtook Monaghan with a combination of fine scoring up front and some good defensive work, limiting Monaghan to just four points in the second half.

Roscommon beat Tyrone 3-28 to 0-14 at Athleague.

Letterkenny Rovers 0

Drumkeen Utd. 1

Drumkeen United maintained their winning start to the season with a last gasp goal to grab all three points against Letterkenny Rovers.

With the game deep in injury time in the 94th minute, an in-swinging corner was flicked on by Eunan Kelly before taking a deflection off a Rovers defender and into the net to secure a dramatic win.

The home side were left to rue their missed chances in what was a hard fought encounter at Leckview Park. Drumkeen came into the game in excellent form having opened their season with back to back wins while Rovers – without a game in two weeks due to their postponed fixture against Bonagee United last week – had started their league campaign with a victory at home to Finn Harps.

photo copy 4Both sides looked at near full strength and the best chance of the first half fell the way of Rovers striker Davitt Walsh who latched onto a precise through pass from Aaron Scanlon only to blaze his effort over the crossbar. The visitors applied pressure from a few set piece situations but the Rovers rearguard held firm.

In the second half, Drumkeen tried their luck from long range with Richie Moore and Mark Marley both missing the target while at the other end substitute Steve Okapu steered a close range effort wide.

In the final minute, the visitors forced two corners and from the second the home defence was found wanting as Kelly’s faint effort did enough to beat Shane O’Gara and seal the win.

LETTERKENNY ROVERS – Shane O’Gara, Dale Gorman, Dan O’Donnell, Kieran Gorman, Jonathan Minnock, Chris Malseed, Kevin McGrath, Glen Gallagher, Davitt Walsh, Darren McElwaine, Aaron Scanlon. Cockhill Keep Up The Pressure

Cockhill Celtic 2

Swilly Rovers 1

Played in perfect conditions at the Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds on Friday night, Cockhill claimed a vital come-from-behind win against a gallant and well organised Swilly team.

Cockhill started the brighter with Derek Doherty especially prominent on the right hand side. However they couldn’t convert this possession into clear chances with Doherty’s crosses being well defended or cut out by Swilly keeper Gareth Wade. Swilly settled and looked dangerous on the counter attack, their first chance coming on 17mins when Kyle Black’s volley from the edge of the box went straight at Gavin Cullen. Swilly took the lead on 19mins when good interplay on the right hand side released Ronan Curtis. His cross finding the unmarked Michael McHugh who headed home at the back post. Cockhill equalised on 23mins when a headed back pass was intercepted by James Bradley who held off a defender before slotting low past Wade from 8 yards. The remainder of the half was an even affair. Swilly almost regained the lead on 25mins when Laurence Toland’s corner found McHugh, whose near post header clipped the bar on its way over. On 29mins, Derek Doherty’s cross found Garbhan Friel, but he was unable to direct his header on target. On 35mins, Friel blocked down a clearance and broke through but Wade made a fine smothering save to deny him. The last chance of the half fell to Swilly. Declan Curtis’ free kick was parried by Cullen. From the resultant corner, Cullen’s punch was volleyed goal wards by Ronan Curtis but he was denied by a brilliant low save from Cullen.

The second half began in a similar vein with Cockhill pressing with Swilly dangerous on the counter. Cockhill were reduced to shots from distance, the most notable of which was Liam O’Donnell’s deflected effort forcing a fine low save from Wade. Swilly had 2 chances to regain the lead mid-half. On 70mins, Michael McHugh’s cross found Declan Curtis. His effort beat Cullen but Conor Keddy was on hand with a fantastic goal-line clearance. On 74mins, a long ball found McHugh in the clear but his attempted lob was straight at Cullen. Swilly were made to rue these missed opportunities on 75mins when Wade misjudged a James Bradley free kick. William O’Connor’s anticipation allowed him to head back across goal for Aidan O’Donnell to bundle home from close range. Swilly’s task was made harder when they were reduced to 10 men on 78mins, when defender Laurence Toland was red-carded for foul and abusive language. Cockhill continued to press for a third goal but efforts from Gerard McLaughlin and Aidan O’Donnell failed to find the target. Swilly, to their credit, competed to the end but any long balls were capably dealt with by Cullen.

Champions Get Win

Bonagee Utd. 2

Derry City Res. 4

Bonagee United

Bonagee United

Three goals in the final ten minutes from the reigning champions, Derry City, ensured they left Bonagee with all three points and inflicted defeat on a home side that have conceded late goals in their first two league outings this season. Bonagee got off to the best possible start when they scored as early as the 6th minute. An Anthony Appiah corner was not fully dealt with by Derry City, and Darren Ashmore was on hand to bundle the ball home from six yards through a swarm of people. Derry equalised in the 19th minute, when a corner was swung to the back post to Paul Ramsey, and he somehow managed to head the ball back into the danger area where George Kelly smashed the ball to the roof of the net to make the score one apiece. The home side regained their lead on the stroke of half time, when defender Glenn Rainey sidefooted home at the second attempt following a good cross from Appiah. The visitors began the second forty five well but were finding a resolute Bonagee defence difficult to break through. They managed to draw level in the 80th minute, a goal they certainly were worthy of. The excellent Josh Treacy raced into the area and his pull back was slotted home by Conor Harkin. City were definitely in the ascendency at this point of the game and they managed to score their third with two minutes to go. Treacy again was the provider, this time his cross was powered home by Raymond Foy. The fourth was scored in the 94th minute by substitute Kyle Curran after a mix-up in the Bonagee defence.

Bonagee: Smyth, Rainey, Doran, Frankowski, O’Loan, Appiah, Russell, Lynagh, Ashmore, McLaughlin & McGee

An Tearmann 1-12

Dungloe 0-12

Termon held on to win a close fought encounter against Dungloe at The Burn Road on Friday evening. In perfect football conditions, both teams served up an exciting encounter with plenty of talking points. Fielding without several of their regulars Termon will be happy to have got the result which moves them into joint second in the table along with Glenfin. Dungloe will be disappointed with the result, but in reality they can have little complaint with the final score.

Some patient build up in the forwards allowed Ollie Doherty to fire over the bar for Termons first score, before Corey Gallagher equalized from a free. Good work from Paddy McDaid gave Daire McDaid the chance to add another point for Termon. A 45 that dropped into the small square gave Kevin McDaid the opportunity to punish the loose handling, which he duly did by firing to the net to open up a 4 point lead after 15 minutes. A 30 yard score from play from Adrian Hanlon followed before 2 more points from Daire McDaid, including a great score from a 45, pushed the Termon lead out to 5 points. Pointed frees from the in-form Corey Gallagher, either side of an Adrian Hanlon point, left the score reading 1-4 to 0-5 in favour of the Termon men when Don Langan blew for the interval.

Termon sprang from the traps in the second half with scores from Paddy McDaid and an Ollie Doherty free giving them an ideal start. An off the ball incident in which Daire McDaid sustained facial injuries meant a pause in proceedings while Don Langan regained control and flashed a yellow card at Adrian Hanlon. Points from Mark Clerkin, Adrian Sweeney and Noel McBride brought it back to a 1 point game halfway through the second half. The game was in the melting pot at this stage with all to play for, when the men in Maroon dug deepest with Jamie Gallagher making a storming run through the middle to set up Paddy McDaid for a fisted point.

Another great run through the middle, this time from Anthony McGrenra, spread panic through the Dungloe defence causing them to concede a free, which was duly converted by the Daire McDaid. A free at the other end from Adrian Sweeney kept the scoreboard ticking over for Dungloe.

Termon began to get to grips in the middle of the field and started winning some primary possession. This allowed patient build up play before Daire McDaid kicked over from an acute angle. A long range free from Ollie Doherty extended the lead and when Daire McDaid added another point, it left Termon leading 1-11 to 9 points. Dungloe began pushing hard for a goal, but the Termon defence held strong and refused to buckle under the pressure. Adrian Sweeney and Ollie Doherty traded frees before a David McCarron point and another Adrian Sweeney free concluded the scoring.

Best for Termon were Daire McDaid, Paddy McDaid and the defensive unit as a whole. Dungloe were best served by Raymond Sweeney,Adrian Sweeney and Corey Gallagher.

Termon: Mark Gallagher; Joe O’Donnell, Kevin McGettigan, Jimmy McElwaine; Jamie Gallagher, Anthony McGrenra, Barry Nelis; Ollie Doherty, Bernard Alcorn; Kevin McDaid, Pauric Hilferty, Daniel Connaghan; Steve McElwaine, Paddy McDaid, Daire McDaid. Subs: Trevor Alcorn for Daniel Connaghan, Daireann Gibson for Barry Nelis, Joe English for Pauric Hilferty.

Dungloe: Ciaran Sharkey; Doalty Boyle, Conor Carr, Mark Sweeney; Gerald Walsh, Sean Sharkey, Basil Malone; Raymond Sweeney, Noel McBride; Mark Clerkin, Corey Gallagher, David McCarron; Adrian Sweeney, Conor Greene, Adrian Hanlon.

Gardai and the emergency services are at the scene of a serious road crash in south Donegal.Garda-accident

It is understood the crash outside Dunkineely involved a car and a van.

There are fears that one person may have died as a result of the accident.

The accident happened in the townland of Brenter – about a mile outside of Dunkineely.

Locals have reported that the Garda Technical team are at the scene and are carrying out a full investigation.

It is not known how the accident was caused at this stage.

One local said “It’s a right mess down there. Nobody knows what happened but it looks like there are just two vehicles involved.

“We have heard that one person has died and another was airlifted to hospital but that could be just speculation.”

We will bring you more as this story develops.

TIME TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP AS TYRONE WAIT TO TEST DONEGAL’S RESOLVE

The talk is over. The preparation is complete. And it’s only their first championship game of the year.Murphy and Sam

It may feel like something approaching a certain Sunday in September but for Donegal their test against Tyrone today may well define their defence of their All-Ireland title today.

More than 17,000 fans, the majority of which will be wearing the green and gold of Tir Conaill, will pack into MacCumhaill Park this afternoon for the Ulster Championship quarter final (throw-in 4pm).

Jim McGuinness is exuding a quiet confidence and has named the same starting fifteen players which busted out of the blocks against Mayo in last September’s All-Ireland final.

Bu he knows there is no better tactician in the game than Tyrone boss Mickey Harte.

He knows too that Donegal are no longer the underestimated surprise package they may have been to many teams last season.

McGuinness and company have locked themselves away behind-closed-doors as the try to hone yet another formula to help them hold onto Sam Maguire.

He knows himself that an over physicality and any cheap frees will be punished by the lethal boot of goalkeeper come free-taker Niall Morgan.

And that’s before we mention the potency of veteran Stephen O’Neill and Sean Cavanagh.

If Tyrone are looking to these household names, then Donegal will be hoping that the likes of Colm McFadden, Michael Murphy and Patrick McBrearty will continue the form they are showing for their clubs.

All will be revealed at 4pm this afternoon as Donegal holds its breath and dreams of another long summer of championship football.

It was the moment which signified their intention to remember a loved one lost through cancer.

The touching moment when a candle of remembrance and of hope lit up the Donegal landscape.Relay for Life Luminara Ceremony. Photo:- Clive Wasson

Hundreds if not thousands of such beacons of hope sat proudly on the football pitch at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology last night.

As the daylight faded on the opening day of the Relay for Life, people gathered in unity to show their determination to continue to fight this dreaded disease.

Arm-in-arm they marched around the pitch to show the fight if far from over.Relay for Life Luminara Ceremony. Photo:- Clive Wasson

They will continue to walk the walk until this evening by which time the second Donegal Relay for Life will have become another huge success.

Take a bow because one day all of you who participated today will say that you helped in your own small way to conquer cancer.

The White House Peace Garden proved extremely popular with one visitor describing it as “an attraction that will be home to many launches, media events, international tourists and even premieres.”

The White House Peace Garden, despite note being complete, showcased the vision of the CPI Committee to create a legacy garden and space, which would draw regular visitors all year round.

Event Director Michael Carlin says they are impressed with the response to the preliminary viewings. “We really wanted to get feedback from visitors on the White House Garden. While it’s not fully complete you get a real sense of the magic of this place.”

‘Automaton’ from Carndonagh scooped the Trash n’ Fashion title.

Conceptualised by Aoife and Éimear McLaughlin the transition year students from Carndonagh Community School created an outfit that would sit very well alongside the a Formula 1 event.

“All of the components which make up this outfit actually came from Éimear’s garage – nuts, bolts, circuit boards, batteries, seat belts, ropes, old mobile phones and even a shower hose,” says Aoife from Malin Head.

Éimear from Malin, says their passion for design and fashion and a newfound love for trash inspired them to get involved. The girls walk away with a cheque for €1,000 for their school; goodie bags and the Trash n Fashion trophy designed by Urney Creations.

Declan Walsh replaces Karl Lacey while David Walsh comes in for Mark McHugh.

In a tense and tight encounter a goal from Colm McFadden has been the difference between the sides.

Conditions have been difficult following heavy rain throughout the first half and as a result players on both sides have made numerous handling errors.  MARK MCHUGH

Mark McHugh who wasn’t named in the starting 15 due to injury has come on in the place of Frank McGlynn who was withdrawn after suffering a recurrence of a hamstring strain.

Donegal have delivered a message of intent to the rest of the country following a truly impressive and clinical performance against Tyrone winning by six points on a scoreline of Donegal 2-10 Tyrone 0-10. Jim

Goals from Colm McFadden and Ross Wherity proved to be the crucial scores that now sees Donegal advance to the semi finals of the Ulster SFC.

Leading by two points at half time Donegal were slow out of the blocks in the 2nd half and Tyrone leveled the game early on in the half.

However, Tyrone were guilty of kicking a massive number of wides and there lack of composure in front of the posts proved fatal.

Donegal on the other hand were much more economical and composed and showed why they are All Ireland champions.    Colm McFadden

With the score locked at 1-06 -0-09 Ross Wherity struck what proved to be the crushing blow to Tyrone following wonderful play from the hugely impressive Patrick McBrearty.

Donegal then added further scores from Michael Murphy, Rory Kavanagh and McBrearty and lead by 7 points with ten minutes remaining as they cruised to victory.

Tyrone had Joe McMahon dismissed near the end of the match after he picked up a second caution following a foul on Michael Murphy.

On the Sunday Game panelist Joe Brolly described Donegal as a machine.

“I thought the game was effectively over at half time to be honest, something extraordinary needed to happen in order for Tyrone to get back into it.”

“They are a machine and they know how to win football matches, they are going to take some stopping again, they suck the life out of teams and to be honest on the managerial match ups it was a non contest.”

“Jim McGuinness has proved yet again what a fantastic manager he is and Mickey Harte or Tyrone had no answers to derailing the machine that is Donegal.”

A wind turbine that came crashing down during heavy winds eight weeks ago has been taken away to be scrapped.

Two cranes and several lorries spent two days on the windfarm at Loughderryduff, near Mass, Portnoo, as the 245-ft turbine was broken down before being transported to Derry.

A spokesman for the developers, North West Wind Ltd, confirmed that the fallen turbine had been removed to Derry.

“The whole site has been cleared. “Workers spent most of Wednesday and Thursday on site cutting the turbine into smaller units,” John Gilllespie said.

The turbine, which has a lifespan of around 25 years, fell just four years after being erected in the eight-unit development.

An investigation into why the wind turbine fell is still being carried out.

Locals say they fear other turbines could fall.
