Mark English has just failed to beat his personal best despite a superb run in Italy today.

Mark English ran another super race today

Mark English ran another super race today

The Letterkenny man ran 1.44.89 to come fourth in the 800 metres.

English was hoping the meeting in Rieti would round off his season in style as he sought to beat a personal time of 1.44.84.

The 20 year old student is just two hundreths of a second off the Irish 800m record, held by Kildare man David Matthews, who ran 1:44.82 in Rieti almost two decades ago.

English competed in the World Championships earlier this month, but didn’t get out of his heat despite showing a brilliant turn of place to put in an excellent final 100m.

The Donegal athlete can consider this another superb season as he builds to challenge the very best in the world.

Glenree are crowned champions

Glenree are crowned champions

An extreme cold and wet Saturday morning did not deter this young and enthusiastic squad of Glenree utd girls of setting their sights and becoming u12 blitz champions of Donegal.

Seven teams in total arrived at the Ballyare football grounds on the day, in high spirits, to compete for this coveted prize.

While all these young teams are talented in their own right, with some excellent passages of football played on the day it was Glenree who clearly had the edge with  victories over Swilly Diamonds, Swilly Rovers, Lagan Harps, Raphoe Utd, Finn Valley and Kilmacrennan, scoring a massive 26 goals in total on the day.

Saturday’s success was a great result for all these young Glenree girls and management alike. Congratulations to each player for all their hard work and effort.

The team now turn their attention to preparing for the Ulster championship on Saturday 21st September at Maginn park, Buncrana.

Glenree Utd will be joined on the day by Swilly Rovers and Kilmacrenan teams who finished in 2nd and 3rd places at the Donegals. Good luck to all teams traveling.

Thanks to all the families who continually give support to the players and club.

A special word of thanks to our very dedicated coach Cathal for his continued training, help and support for this team.

Thanks also to Michelle for all her hard work at all our matches and events.

Cockhill and Drumkeen Remain on course for Title Showdown

Cockhill Celtic and Drumkeen Utd remain on course for a winner takes all title showdown after both teams registered comfortable wins on Sunday over Letterkenny Rovers and Swilly Rovers respectively. Both teams were away from home but avoided any potential banana skins as they romped to easy wins over the two Rovers who are battling for 3rd place in the final standings. Both teams registered early goals to ensure they would not be under pressure late in the game and though both games were still delicately poised at half time and though the Letterkenny men registered an early second half score to put the Inishowen lads under some pressure, they both added to their goals for tallies in impressive second period performances that leaves just two points between the two sides with two games remaining including a mouth watering showdown at The Charlie O’Donnell Sports Grounds.

Letterkenny Rovers 1

Cockhill Celtic 6

Cockhill Celtic travelled to Leckview Park on Sunday and collected all three points in a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Letterkenny Rovers.

Celtic took an early lead when Aidan O’Donnell fired past Quinn in the Rovers goals in the 10th minute. They increased their lead on 17 minutes when the powerful Garbhain Friel hammered home a low drive from just inside the 18 yard box. Gerry Gill and Friel came close to increasing their lead before half time, but the score stood at 2-0 going in at the interval.

To Rovers credit they started the second half well and made it 2-1 when Steve Okakpu scored from close range and Jonathan Minnock rattled the crossbar with a free kick., but their good start was to no avail as Cockhill won lead the Ulster Senior lead by 2 points added 4 more goals in the second half through a second from O’Donnell, two from Jimmy Bradley and Malachy McDermott.

Up next for the League leaders in a Cup Final against their title rivals Drumkeen United next Sunday afternoon in Bonagee.

Referee: Packie Coll

Swilly Rovers 0

Drumkeen Utd. 7

An emphatic victory for the Drumkeen men in a very one-sided affair at Swilly Park. Goals from Conor Carlin, Chris McBride (2), Eunan Kelly (2), Seimi Nanny Friel, Ronan Coyle sealed the win for Drumkeen. Drumkeen led two-nil at the break and strolled to a very comfortable victory in the second half. Swilly were minus regular goalkeeper Gareth Wade, while Ronan Curtis and Jordan Toland were transferred to Derry City U19s during the week. They also have been ravaged by injuries in recent weeks, with several regulars out injured. However on this display, Drumkeen deserve to be title contenders and will fight Cockhill every inch of the way for the title. Despite Swilly being depleted, this was a very impressive display from Drumkeen. They even had a rich array of talent on the substitutes’ bench.

ROVERS FIGHTBACK TO EARN POINT

Letterkenny Rovers 4

Derry City Res. 4

Letterkenny Rovers staged a dramatic second half comeback to earn a 4-4 draw with Derry City in a pulsating encounter at Leckview Park last Wednesday evening.

The home side trailed 4-1 with less than 20 minutes to go but a stirring late fight back – which included two goals from top marksman Darren McElwaine – ensured the home side a share of the spoils as the visitors were left stunned by their late collapse.

This was a match full of entertainment with some outstanding goals on view and the point earned at the conclusion may prove crucial for Trevor Scanlon’s men in their bid to secure a third place finish. The defending league champions looked well course to continue their recent run of form but the manner in which they threw away their winning position will upset team boss John Quigg.

The visitors led 2-0 at the break courtesy of a brace from Nathan Boyle. The lively winger opened the scoring as early as the sixth minute combining with Tony McNamee to steer his shot beyond Jason Quinn in the Rovers goal. Kevin McGrath drew an excellent save from Seamus Houghton midway through the first half before Boyle doubled Derry’s advantage with another clinical finish just before the half-time interval. Derry appeared to wrap up the contest ten minutes into the second half when substitute Conal Kelly headed home a Conor Harkin cross. However the home side showed renewed vigour in the second half and when Aaron Scanlon’s long range shot was diverted home by substitute Anthony Doherty it reduced the deficit to 3-1. Darren McElwaine produced an outstanding point blank save from Seamus Houghton and the visitors went straight up the other end to restore their three goal adavantage courtesy of another Kelly goal. But the Rovers revivial really took off in the final half an hour. Oisin McMenamin showed some wonderful individual skill to hold off the challenge of several defenders before steering a low drive beyound Houghton to make it 4-2.

The comeback really looked on the cards when substititute Kieran Gorman headed down for McElwaine who turned and shot inside the six yard box to make 4-3 with less than ten minutes remaining. And with Rovers pilling on the pressure they grabbed a dramatic equalsiser when Gorman again caused mayhem inside the Derry box before releasing McElwaine who thumped home a superb equaliser form an acute angle.

Letterkenny Rovers – Jason Quinn, Kieran Doherty (Anthony Doherty 65 mins), Jonathan Minnock, Ruair Kelly, Glenn Gallagher, Jason Doherty, Gareth Doherty (Oisin Grant 48 mins), Darren McElwaine, Kevin McGrath (Kieran Gorman 78 mins), Oisin McMenamin.

Derry City – Seamus Houghton, Michael Barr, Shaun Curran, Caolan McLaughlin, Dylan McCallion (Conal Kelly 45 mins), Conor Harkin, Ryan Doherty, Raymond Foy, Aidan McCauley, Tony McNamee, Nathan Boyle.

NAOMH MUIRE INTO FINAL AND DEDICATE WIN TO CONOR BOYLE

1185027_623649754346508_152528056_nNaomh Muire 1-11 v Aodh Rua 0-6

Naomh Muire are in the Intermediate Championship Final following today’s semi-final win over Aodh Rua. Aodh Rua started the livelier and the lads were finding it hard to get any rhythm allowing Aodh Rua to get into a 0-4 to -0-1 lead and was it not for poor finishing by the Erne-siders…..they could have created damage early on. Naomh Muire scored their way back into level and just before HT Paul the Yank Boyle converted a penalty putting the lads into a lead their possession may not have deserved. Aodh Rua overall would have been disappointed to be down by a goal at HT .

The second half was a different performance by Naomh Muire and apart from the opening 5 mins – the lads went on to dominate the second half adding a further 6 points with Aodh Rua managing only a single score late on.

It’s great to get to another Intermediate Championship final and that will be against the impressive St Nauls who beat Naomh Columba well last night. The prize is not only a county title at this level but Senior Championship football in 2014. St Naul’s are a physically strong team led by Stephen Griffen. Naomh Muire will have to play the full hour in the final and a slow start like today will be punished without doubt. If the lads however can repeat the purple patch of today’s match which was the last 20 mins of the second half….and ensure that it is carried over the full game…..they can topple St Naul’s. In a way its good to come out of a Semi with plenty of work to do and things to improve and with time now to do that. No doubt Danny and the backroom team will get the lads down to serious preparation over the coming weeks….to be an hour away from Senior Championship football in 2014 requires little motivation.

Well done to Team and Management and again to a good support. The victory in a Semi-final is what matters and the team especially this years Minors involved dedicated the win to young Conor Boyle, their mate, who is critical in Hospital in the UK.

Team – Bryan Grant, Robbie O’Donnell, Brian Gillespie, Thomas Duffy, Sean Point Gallagher (0-1), Adi O Gara, Jack O’Brien, Owenie McGarvey, Paul Yank Boyle (1-1), Dara White, Padraig Mc Cafferty (0-1), Patrick Gillespie (0-1),Shaun Yank Boyle (0-3) Ciaran McGinley (0-1) Hugh Yank Boyle (0-1).

DOUBLE DELIGHT AS JIM AND YVONNE McGUINNESS HAVE TWIN GIRLS

$

He may not have captured back-to-back All-Irelands but Jim McGuinness is celebrating on the double.

The McGuinness family has grown bigger.

The McGuinness family has grown bigger.

The Donegal GAA boss was relieved after wife Yvonne gave birth to two bouncing baby girls.

The girls arrived at Letterkenny General Hospital on Friday evening.

Both new-born babies are said to be doing fine as is their solicitor mum Yvonne.

It is not known yet what the couple have decided to call their new arrivals although it is understood they are considering naming them Bonnie and Aoibh.

A friend said “Everyone is doing fine. There’s always a worry with a new baby arriving and that is doubled when you are expecting twins.

“Thankfully everything went to plan and they now have two new lovely girls to add to their family.”

The new arrivals means the young couple now have five young children – two boys and three girls.

It’s certainly promises to be a busy household at the couples’ home in Portnoo.

It will especially be busy for Yvonne with husband Jim working with Glasgow Celtic FC in Scotland up to four days a week.

He has spoken before about how the couple could not have coped without the help of their family.

McGuinness, from Glenties, has still to confirm if he is to continue on as Donegal boss after they were beaten by Mayo in the All-Ireland quarter final.

The Donegal manager, who lost two brothers, Charles and Mark, says the loss puts family into perspective over sport.

“I think it does make you stronger on one level – it also leaves you slightly vulnerable for the rest of your life.

“The one positive I would say would be that it gives you a really, really strong perspective on your own life.

“For me there’s nothing more important in my life than my family and my children.

“That in many respects comes from the fact that I know what loss is and how much it can impact a family so every moment with my wife and children is very precious to me ” he said.

SUNDAY REPORTS

Brian Mc Cormick – Area Finals

Dunkineely Celtic 3 Copany Rovers 0

Dunkineely continued their good start to the season with victory in the Donegal Town Area Final of The Brian Mc Cormick Cup. Copany began this game very well and had all the early possession and pressure. They found it very difficult to create any clear openings against a home defence well marshalled by Shane Mc Whinnie and Paul Mc Geoghan. David Graham was a constant threat for Copany on the left wing and his deliveries into the box gave Dunkineely plenty to think about. The first clear chance of the game fell to Dunkineely after 10 minutes when Andrew Mackey was put through by Adrian Nesbitt but he pulled his shot wide. Copany kept working hard and forced a number of corners but could not find the target. On 26 minutes Adrian Nesbitt saw his shot well saved by William Given in the Copany goal and he then hit the post with the rebound. Nesbitt made up for this miss two minutes later when he broke into the box from the left and his low shot beat the keeper at the near post. Andrew Mackey came close for Dunkineely with a shot on 30 minutes and a header on 43 minutes.

The second half started as the first did with Copany putting the home side under some pressure. Thomas Given had a header from close range well saved by John Mc Mullin on 57 minutes. Dunkineely survived this pressure and doubled their lead on the hour mark when Alan Lyons found Andrew Mackey, with a great pass out of defence, and he ran through to beat the keeper from 10 yards. Copany fought back and Shane Harron saw his header come back of the bar. Despite their best efforts Copany could not get the goal that would have put them back in the game. Dunkineely squandered a number of good chances before Andrew Mackey finished the scoring with a tremendous shot from 25 yards which gave the keeper no chance.

A deserved victory for Dunkineely but a great effort from Copany Rovers and their Mc Cormick Cup efforts will stand them well for the coming season.

Rathmullan Celtic 3 Milford United 3

(4-4 a.e.t. Milford won 4-2 on penalties)

Milford United edged out defending Cup holders Rathmullan Celtic in the Area Shield Final of the Brian McCormick Cup after an exhilarating eight goal thriller at the Flagpole. Manus Boyce scored the all important spot kick to give Milford United a 4-2 triumph and secure a place in the semi-finals of the tournament in March.

This local derby served up a Sunday sizzler of an Area Final in front of a two hundred strong attendance at the Seaside town, sharing eight goals after extra time after both sides were inseparable at 3-3 after the regulation 90 minutes.

It was Paddy Sheridan and Paddy Burger Patton’s Rathmullan side that took the early advantage after six minutes when Kevin Mc Carry showed great composure in front of goal to beat Caolan Mc Gettigan inside the area after Dara Patton sent the winger through with a defence splitting lob from midfield.

However former Fanad United striker PJ Hagan equalised proceedings for the Swans on 16 minutes with a scintillating strike into the top corner from 18 yards following a cross from the left wing from Darren McLaughlin. The Hoops almost edged ahead with the very next attack following their centre with man of the match Eamonn Sheridan setting Paddy Craig Sheridan through on the left side, but the winger was denied by a superb reflex save from Mc Gettigan in goals.

The Seasiders pressed to regain the lead and duly did so on 35 minutes when Eoin Sheridan crossed to new signing Leonard Boyce inside the area and the striker tucked his strike into the bottom left corner. Yet again Milford responded and just on the stroke of half time Jimmy Heena took full advantage of a goal mouth scramble, following a corner, to strike low inside the six yard box and leave the derby tied at 2-2 at half time.

Niall Doherty was brought down inside the Milford box on 50 minutes and striker Eamonn Sheridan was calmness personified from the resulting spot kick to give the Hoops the lead for the third time in the match. Former Hoops midfielder Johnny Sweeney thought he had equalised for United on 58 minutes after unleashing a venomous strike from 30 yards which saw Rathmullan keeper Ian Strain produce a finger tip save to deny the midfielder.

Noel Gillespie and Peter Doherty’s Swans began adopting the Giovanni Trapattoni long ball game as the visitors heaped pressure on the Seasider’s defence and left winger Darren McLaughlin saw his strike come off the inside of Strain’s right hand post on 75 minutes. The Hoops were unlucky not to extend their lead on 85 minutes after Ryan Connolly was denied by another fine reflex save from Mc Gettigan. As the final whistle beckoned Darren Mc Loughlin popped up inside the area on 88 minutes to finish clinically and force the epic final into extra time.

The Seasiders took the lead for the fourth time of the afternoon when Eamonn Sheridan scored an exceptional goal from 20 yards out at an almost impossible angle. Once again Connolly was denied by a fine save from Mc Gettigan on 97 minutes as the Hoops pressed to close out the contest. The Swans pressed for an equaliser in the second period of extra time and just when it seemed it was beyond them, Mark ‘Spike’ Flood rose highest at the back post to score an unstoppable header in the dying seconds of extra time following a corner from McLaughlin to snatch a dramatic equaliser and force the dreaded penalty shoot out to decide the derby finale.

From the ensuing spot kicks, Milford advanced following Mc Gettigan’s heroics in goal and centre half Manus Boyce scored the winning penalty to give Gillespie and Doherty’s troops a 4-2 win in the shoot-out which sees them advance to the last four of the Brain McCormick Cup next March. Eamonn Sheridan had a stormer for the Seasiders with two goals and a composed performance up front while Milford’s never say die attitude saw them equalise four times and shade a classic derby after penalties after a dramatic eight goal thriller after 110 minutes of pulsating football.

Referee: Patrick Duffy

Keadue Rovers 1 Glenea United 2

Glenea United emerged victorious in the Gweedore Area Final after this tight and entertaining affair at Central Park. In what were ideal conditions for football it was Glenea who started the stronger moving the ball about at pace and using the wings well. After weathering the initial ten minutes Keadue came more into the game and Donal Rodgers did well holding the ball and shooting on the turn, but the shot was saved by Joe Coll. With the home side now doing well the best chance of the game came in the twenty second minute. Following some good work down the left by Adam Neely and Ryan Greene it was Martin Redmond who had a great chance from close range but it was saved again by Joe Coll. However by the twenty eighth minute it was 1-0 to the home side when Ryan Greene picked up a pass outside the area, avoided a tackle, and unleashed a fine effort to the left hand corner of the net. Glenea responded very well to this setback and within a few minutes Michael Barry did well to get a shot in but it was saved by Ciaran Sharkey in the Keadue goal. They followed this up with a succession of corners and it came as no surprise when they equalised on forty one minutes. From a Glenea throw in they won a penalty following a foul just inside the box and up stepped Padraig McGee to confidently convert to make it 1-1 and it stayed that way until half time. At the start of the second half Keadue were forced into a substitution when right back Ryan Rodgers went off injuired forcing a bit of a re-shuffle to the home team. Against the run of play it was Glenea who went ahead on fifty two minutes. Another penalty was awarded and again Padraig McGee slotted home. Keadue responded well and following a good move on the hour Adrian Hanlon hit a firm shot just wide. Glenea striker Ryan McFadden was proving dangerous and shot narrowly wide soon after and Keadue’s Martin Redmond had a half decent effort go just over the bar as the game went from end to end. In the last twenty minutes however Glenea were getting more possession around midfield and generally were on top It was Glenea’s Michael Barry who came closest to scoring in the eighty third minute when his header from a good cross skimmed the crossbar. Glenea were proving just that little bit stronger and more experienced in the second half and held on for a hard fought but deserved victory. They were presented with the Gweedore Area Shield of the Brian McCormick Cup by Nigel Ferry of the Donegal League afterwards. A good competitive encounter with Keadue, despite being a division below Glenea proving a match for them and hopefully will have a good season ahead in Division 1 of the League while Glenea will be certainly in the running for the Premier Division title.

Best for Glenea were Kevin McFadden, Padraig McGee and Ryan McFadden while best for Keadue were Ryan Greene, Paul Ferry and Adam Neely. Referee: Ed Moore.

Castlefin Celtic 3 Drumoghill F.C. 2

Drumoghill took the lead in the 12th minute after a mix up in the Castlefin defence saw the ball come across the box to Liam O’ Donnell who scored.

Kevin Kelly could have made it two from the edge of the box but his shot went over the bar. Brian Coll was in top form in the Drumoghill defence. Kelly had another chance to double the lead but his shot was straight at Castlefin keeper Paul Lafferty.

JP Malley should have equalised on 30 minutes but quick thinking from the Drumoghill defence saw his effort cleared off the line. PJ Mc Menamin then had a great effort from 30 yards saved by the Drumoghill keeper Greg Regan. Both midfields were playing well with Mark Carlin causing problems for the visitors.

Castlefin started the brighter in the second half with the Drumoghill keeper Regan making three good saves.

Kevin Kelly made it two nil to Drumoghill early in the second half. Despite being 2 down Castlefin never gave up and kept at the Drumoghill defence. Lack of communication in the Castlefin defence let Drumoghill in again but excellent work from Ciaran Brennan saw him clear of the line.

Castlefin’s hard work was rewarded when Colin Carlin found Ronan Tourish on the edge of the box in the 74th minute for Tourish to find the far corner and make it 2-1. Castlefin kept the pressure on with Greg Regan making a great save to deny JP Malley.

In the 83rd minute Castlefin found the equalizer when Drumoghill failed to clear a corner and PJ Mc Menamin found Colin Carlin who beat the keeper and tapped home from close range. With seven minutes remaining, as the big crowd was looking to extra-time, Ronan Tourish won a free kick. PJ Mc Menamin stepped up to hit the free and scored from 30 yards out to win the game FOR Castlefin Celtic. Referee: Kevin Logue. Best for Castlefin: Damien Mc Anenny, PJ Mc Menamin and Colin Carlin. Best for Drumoghill: Kevin Kelly and Greg Regan

Mulroy Celtic 0 Bonagee United 4

Bonagee travelled to Fanad for the final Brian Mc Cormick Cup Group match and left with their tails up after sweeping the home team aside. They took the lead through Karl Duggan who followed in a loose ball to head home. Soon after their frontman turned the Mulroy defence and dispatched a fine strike to the top corner. The home side offered very little and struggled to get a foothold in the game. Three and four followed in a second half which the away side held possession for long periods. Mulroy fashioned a few half chances when they brought on Talbot. Strong team performance from Bonagee United. Andrew Friel served Mulroy Celtic well.

Donegal Area – Group 2

St. Catherines 0 Copany Rovers 2 a.e.t.

St Catherine’s and Copany Rovers went head to head for a place in the Donegal area final.

The game started slowly with both sides sloppy in possession but after 20 minutes both sides started to find their stride getting into good positions but the final ball letting both sides down. It remained 0-0 until halftime.

Copany came out determined for the second half and started to create a few clear cut chances with Thomas Given and Callum Gallagher going close. On 75 minutes Marty Mc Grath got on the end of a David Graham cross but he hit the bar and five minutes later David Graham hit the post. St. Catherines couldn’t break the deadlock either so the match went to extra time.

Copany again started sprightly and were rewarded with two quick goals one from the impressive Calum Gallagher and the second from David Graham. That’s how it finished 2-0 a.e.t. to Copany.

St. Catherines Reserves 2 Castlefin Celtic Reserves 2

Glenea United Reserves 0 Erne Wanderers 2

It wintry conditions it was the league champions who took home all three points. Playing with the elements to their back in the first half Erne had most of the possession but were unable to create any clear cut chances until the 37th minute when Stephen Curneen headed home at the near post. Into the 2nd half and it was the home side who took control of the game but, like Erne in the opening period, they were unable to create any clear cut chances and were made to pay on 70 minutes when Mark Dorrian cooly slotted home. Glenea pushed hard to get back into the game but were denied by a couple of good saves from the Erne keeper. Credit to both sets of players in what were difficult conditions.

Mulroy Celtic 3 Ramelton Mariners 2

Played in monsoon conditions Mulroy claimed three valuable early season points. They took the lead inside five minutes when Enda Coll stepped inside two men and dispatched a great shot inside the near post. Against a very strong wind the away side played some good football and it paid off when they equalised after a badly defended corner. Mulroy continued to press and should have regained the lead when Packie rounded the keeper only for a last ditch tackle to save the keeper’s blushes. The conditions improved for the second half and it was the home side who took the lead again through Seamus Coyle who raced clear and finished clinically. They doubled their lead soon after when Coyle let fly from the edge of the area and a sizeable deflection took the ball over the keeper. Ramelton pulled a goal back with fifteen minutes left on the clock when they chipped the keeper. Mulroy held out for a hard fought win. Excellent team performance from the home side while Mariners were served well by Gibby and Giles.

Donegal Town Reserves 6 Cranford United Reserves 5

Donegal Town came out on top in this extraordinary game which saw six goals scored inside the first sixteen minutes of play. Cranford three times took the lead but were pegged back on each occasion by a stubborn Donegal outfit. Buchanan put Cranford in front with a tidy finish at the near post. Donegal equalised straight from kick off when Paul Gerard Duncan was put through and he finished superbly. A Ben Mc Bride penalty was then cancelled out when Gary Harron struck a fine first time shot from outside the area. Paddy Doohan flicked home a near post corner shortly after but yet again Donegal came back when David Bustard headed home to make it 3-3 to cap of an incredible first sixteen minutes. Cranford went in ahead at the break through Paddy Doohan’s strike. After the break Donegal were much more composed and played some good football at times. Paul Gerard Duncan slipped the ball to David Harron out wide and his cross was met by David Bustard to level things up once again. Bustard then headed Donegal in front after he pounced on a mix up in the Cranford defence. With the game now in the balance Cranford broke the offside trap and Brendan Giles squared things up with ten minutes to go. Both teams pushed forward in search of a winner and Donegal made the crucial breakthrough when their star performer David Harron headed home a Ciarán O’Reilly cross. A thoroughly entertaining game which was played in a sporting manner. Best performers on the day for Donegal were the front pairing of David Harron and David Bustard along with Padhraic Mc Glynn in the centre of midfield. Overall a quality team performance from Cranford.

Tullyvinney Rovers 0 Gweedore United Reserves 5

This first day of the new League season saw this match reversed to Carrickboyle and the Gweedore side took full advantage. Tullyvinney with the aid of the strong wind, in the opening half, pressed the United defence and created half chances through Adam Gardener and Dennis Mc Bride. They found it difficult to break down the Gweedore back four. The home side looked dangerous on the break and in the 35th minute Sean Paul Mc Fadden broke the deadlock when he finished well past Michael Shields following a good through pass from Stephen O’ Donnell. In the second half the home side had the aid of the strong breeze and went two up in the 46th minute when Sean Paul Mc Fadden got his second with a good free kick from 20 yards. In the 52nd minute Ciaran Cannon made it three when he finished well having spotted Shields off his line. In the 72nd minute Mc Mahon got his hat-trick and United’s 4th when his pace took him past two defenders to finish well. United made it five in the 85th minute with Stephen O’ Donnell finishing well. In difficult weather conditions both teams delivered good performances with Sean Paul Mc Mahon deserving of his hat-trick on the day.

Curragh Athletic Reserves 3 Glenree United Reserves 2

Curragh Athletic Reserves got their new Saturday League campaign underway with a victory over Glenree United Reserves. Glenree opened the scoring on seventeen minutes through Declan Nelis. Curragh equalised following a good move resulting in Shane Elliot being brought down for a penalty. Young Justin Mc Bride stepped up and coolly scored past the Glenree stopper. Glenree went ahead again in the 52nd minute through Damian Nelis. Curragh again equalised in the 65th minute after good approach work from Burnsy who whipped in a cross and Shane Elliot beat the defender to head past the keeper. Curragh won the game in the 85th minute when a through ball from Marty Mc Laughlin found Gary Heeney who expertly drilled the ball over the advancing keeper. Curragh held on for a deserved victory. Buncrana GAA Notes Buncrana gaa logo

Senior Ladies Football: Our ladies team had to travel to Carndonagh to face Urris in their Junior County Championship Semi Final on Sunday. They played in great weather conditions at the Carn pitch, considering the down pours of Saturday. The girls got off to a bit of a shaky start and Urris put 1-02 on the board before Buncrana could find a reply. Once they put the first score on the board, and settled the semi-final nerves, they soon relaxed into the team that they are.

It was mostly point for point in the first half, with some great forward runs from the Urris midfield duo, but the Buncrana defence was able to overcome most of these attacks, and only conceded one goal in this period. However, the accuracy of the Buncrana forwards towards the end of the half had the girls going in at half time 3-6 to 1-5 in the lead.

The Buncrana squad started the much stronger in the second half and took control of the ball for most of the game. There was impressive individual displays from Niamh Connolly and Natasha Craig, but every player who took to the field in a Buncrana jersey played with everything they had, and they all deserve to be in a County Championship final. The girls will now face Naomh Columba of Glencolmcille in the final on Sunday 15th September; venue yet to be confirmed.

Senior Football: Our senior footballers lost out to Termon on Sunday night. Final score 0-7 to 0-14.

Senior Reserve Football: Our reserves face St. Naul’s in the Intermediate Reserver Championship semi-final on Sunday afternoon in Ballybofey. After getting off to a flying start, Buncrana were 0-4 to 0-1 up after 20 minutes following scores from Kevin McLean, Mark McConnell and Kevin Treacy. However St. Naul’s battled their way back into the game to draw level just before half time. St. Naul’s started the second half brightly, registering a point straight from the throw-in. Despite going down to fourteen men, Buncrana battled their way into the lead once again, with scores from Kevin Treacy, Kevin McClean and Oisin O’Flaherty. St. Naul’s were clinical with a number of free kicks in the closing stages of the game and were eventual winners on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-11.

U21 Football: Under 21 side bowed out of the championship to a strong Aodh Rua side on Wednesday evening. With the entire panel underage for next season and the majority for next 2/3 seasons these lads are destined for better days.

U16 Hurling: Hurling continues to go from strength to strength in Buncrana as our Under 16 Hurlers are County Champions once again, and have brought another trophy home to the Scarvey. Well done to the mentors and all the players.

U13 Football: The U13s season is well up going. Last Sunday 2nd September they lost out to a strong St. Eunan’s side who finished stronger with some late goals. The boys were leading by 8 points at one stage but couldn’t hold on.

The second match came away against Termon on Sunday 8th. The boys played well against another good team and came out victors 2-7 to 4-6, with Matthew Wilson playing very well and leading the team by example. The boys are next out on Saturday in the Scarvey at 11.30am due to the Sports day next Sunday. Training as normal Tuesdays and Fridays.

Lotto: The winning numbers in the lotto draw, which took place on Tuesday 3rd September in O’Flaherty’s Bar on the Main Street, are as follows: 3-6-20-27

There was no jackpot winner this week, however prizes of €20 go to each of the following participants:

Jim Gillen, Millfield Heights

Caroline Duffy, Leophin

E. Doherty, Trillick

ALL-IRELAND SEMI-FINAL BRAWL IN DONEGAL PUB LANDS WOMAN IN COURT

gavel1A NUMBER of women argued and fought in a pub after watching Donegal win last year’s All-Ireland semi-final, a court has heard.

The incident took place on August 26 last year as patrons of the Shamrock Bar in Ballybofey watched the game.

Before Letterkenny District Court today Clarissa Cairns, from Townparks, Convoy, pleaded guilty to assault, being threatening and abusive in a public place and being drunk in a public place.

Inspector Michael Harrison told the court that the entire incident was captured on CCTV images in the pub and involved a row between several women.

He said the footage showed 19-year-old Cairns dancing in the vicinity of two other women on the dance floor of the pub.

Cairns could then be seen running out to the smoking area of the bar where the offence took place.

“The camera captures the defendant arguing with another female and a row develops. Miss Cairns is involved in that row,” said Inspector Harrison.

“It involves a whole pile of girls fighting with each other; it seems to go on for quite a while,” he said.

Defence solicitor Donagh Cleary said Ms Cairns made a statement to Gardai saying she was very drunk on the evening in question and later apologised to all concerned.

“She apologised for stuff she wasn’t certain she did do,” said Mr Cleary.

Inspector Harrison added: “There was a huge amount of alcohol taken.”

Mr Cleary said his client deeply regretted the incident.

She was hoping to embark on a career in healthcare and had just returned from a holiday in Seville, Spain, run by the Wider Horizons Project.

Judge Paul Kelly said he would give Cairns “an opportunity” as this was her first offence.

He told Cairns: “When you take part in this sort of behaviour you will find it difficult to travel to other countries in future.”

He ordered her to make a €150 donation to charity.

The Shamrock Bar has since closed.

FIANNA FAIL CALLS FOR EXTENSION TO DEADLINE FOR SPECIAL NEEDS SUPPORTS

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Education Charlie McConalogue has called for an extension to the deadline for applications for special needs supports in schools.Charlie McConalogueTD

The Inishowen TD described the current deadline as ‘unfair and unrealistic’.

“As it stands, schools have only until Friday week to apply for resource hours and Special Needs Assistants they will need for the year. Any child with disabilities that has not been assessed in time will have to go the full school year without the support they need.

“It is simply unreasonable to expect that the needs of all children in the school system can be fully and correctly assessed within three weeks of the new school year, particularly given the significant increase in the school going population this year.

“I believe it does not give teachers anywhere near enough time to evaluate all children in their class, especially those who are new to the school,” said Deputy McConalogue.

He added this deadline puts enormous pressure on teachers and parents.

“In many cases, a child’s special needs will not become apparent for a few weeks after they and their class have settled into the new school year. But by that time, it will be too late to apply for additional supports and that child will have to wait a full year before an application can be made. Not only will this have potentially serious consequences for their development, it could affect the entire classroom environment.

“My concern is that such a strict deadline is another cynical attempt to cut costs by reducing the number of applications for SNAs and resource hours. Minister Quinn has already targeted these supports and despite being forced into a u-turn on his cuts to resource hours, additional SNA reductions have kicked in this year.

“I am urging the Minister to do the right thing and extend the deadline for at least another two weeks give schools a chance to ensure that all children who need support get it this year.”

Barry McNamee will be hoping to play some part in tonight's U21 fixture against Germany.

Barry McNamee will be hoping to play some part in tonight’s U21 fixture against Germany.

McNamee was capped at this level in May in a friendly against Denmark and was an unused sub for the last qualifier in the Faroe Islands.

He was initially on stand-by for this squad but received a late call-up after another player withdrew from the squad due to injury.

Noel King has expressed before that he rates the Derry City midfielder highly and believes he has a bright future in the game.

McNamee has enjoyed a fine season for Derry City and last year helped them to win the FAI Cup against St.Patrick’s Athletic last season.

Ireland face a stiff challenge tonight against a World class opponent in Germany.

The match is being played tonight at the Showgrounds in Sligo with Kick-off at 7.45pm.

I was delighted and honoured that I was invited to go to listen to Kerry Max Cook’s speech in the Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin.

by Ciara Goode

The talk was organised by ‘Soar’, an organisation which aims to help young people to learn to cope with and accept the things that life throws at them.

Ms. Dympna English organised a visit by Soar to Mulroy College in March this year and I found the experience extremely interesting and along with other students we found it rewarding.

The school was then invited to attend Soar’s conference and Ms English organised the trip and accompanied me to Dublin along with Ms. Catherine Crawford to hear Kerry Max Cook’s story.

Kerry was falsely imprisoned on death row for 22 years for a murder that he did not commit.

He fought his innocence until the bitter end and was released from jail after his name was cleared. Kerry’s story really inspired me to keep going and to never lose hope.

He has had to deal with the most horrific conditions and experiences imaginable. He told the story with so much emotion; it nearly brought me to tears.

His story has shown me that people can get through anything, will power and a positive attitude means everything. I thoroughly enjoyed this eye opening, once-in-a-lifetime, experience and enjoyed the message of keeping positive at all times.
