Loughrea double for Dylan Browne-McMonagle

Letterkenny rider Dylan Browne McMonagle had to settle for a double at Loughrea over the weekend in a very competitive bumper race card on an overcast but pleasant afternoon.

Dylan got his first win on board Unhinged as he took the 143cm in effortless fashion and then had to wait until the concluding race of a 11 race programme to double up on Murphys Stroke 2 in the two-mile open, winning with plenty in the locker.

County Antrim rider Sam Ewing had a good day at the office as he drove Waratah to victory in the 148cm in an epic finish and soon doubled up when he guided Omega to score in the first divide of the open mile.

Daniel King is building up a good partnership with the Kyle Browne-McGuigan stable when he was seen to good effect getting Louis Vuitton home by the slenderest of margins in the 153cm but had a much easier time winning on Who Knows in the second divide of the Open mile.

Galway rider Danny Gilligan kept up his bragging rights when coasting to victory on the diminutive Little Mainne in the 138cm but he had to get pretty animated when driving home Try Your best in the ten furlong open.

Co Meath jockey Rory Mulligan is a young rider going the right direction as he got his second win of the season on the pint sized Where It Began in the 128cm.

Limerick man Philip Byrnes was seen at his most powerful as he got a renew run out of The Whistle Blower in the 12 furlong Open to just touch of Churchall in what was a very exciting finish denying Daniel King a Treble.

Racing resumes in Carrickadawson on June 9th at 2.30pm, weather permitting.

It was the day Colm McFadden ‘torpedoed the All-Ireland champions’ – an Ulster Championship clash in 2004 when Donegal defeated Tyrone.

The previous September, Tyrone won their first ever All-Ireland title.

Picture: Christy Toye and Brian Roper celebrate with Donegal goalscorer Colm McFadden in 2004.

Mickey Harte’s men entered the Clones cauldron as the defending All-Ireland and Ulster champions.

Donegal had been semi-finalists in 2003, losing out to Armagh.

In 2004, Donegal stunned Tyrone. Brian McEniff’s men were held scoreless for 23 minutes, but were only 0-4 to 0-3 behind at half-time.

Donegal lost Niall McCready to a second yellow card late in the first half, but they were scintillating in the second half and McFadden scored an excellent 1-7.

“The new golden boy of Gaelic football, Colm McFadden, torpedoed the All-Ireland champions with a magical display of finishing,” the Irish Examiner of the time reported.

The inquests will be held in Buncrana today of two brothers who drowned while fishing for lobster off the Donegal coast.

Glengad men Francis (68) and Danny McDaid (70) died when their boat capsized three miles off Inishowen in March, 2008.

The brothers had been plucked from the water and rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital but were pronounced dead later.

No alert had been issued by the vessel, and it is believed the two men had been in the water for some hours.

Both had been separated and swept some three miles from where they had been working, into Northern Irish territorial waters.

Apart from loose debris, there was no sign of their boat, the 10 metre Strath-Marie.

The alarm had been raised by Francis McDaid’s son when their wooden half-decker boat failed to return to Bunagee harbour.

The search for the men, which was coordinated by the Malin Head Radio Coastguard, involved the Rescue 118 helicopter as well as the Lough Swilly Lifeboat, Portrush Lifeboat, the Greencastle Coast Guard vessel and several local boats.

A man with 110 previous convictions has been jailed for three months after driving off from a petrol station without paying for €82 of fuel.

Gardai spotted Thomas McDonagh after he spun the wheels of his red Hyundai Tucson and he left the Applegreen Filling Station and drove across four lanes of roadway in Letterkenny on May 4th, 2018.

McDonagh’s solicitor Mr Patsy Gallagher said his client was a 39-year-old father of three who had battled drug and drink addictions for many years.

The court also heard that McDonagh, with an address at Castlerea Prison, had pleaded guilty to public order charges at Letterkenny University Hospital and at Lower Main street in Letterkenny.

Judge Paul Kelly imposed fines totalling €300 and also jailed McDonagh for three months on the theft charge.

Another charge against McDonagh was put back until June 17th to allow the Director of Public Prosecutions to review the charge.

Porsche crew cruises into Donegal for thrilling road trip

A team of Porsche promoters and influential bloggers from Germany had the ultimate road trip in Donegal recently to showcase the potential for adventure on the Wild Atlantic Way.

Tourism Ireland in Germany recently teamed up with the famous car manufacturer Porsche for the visit to showcase Donegal as a fantastic driving holiday destination.

A team from Porsche captured content – at places like Horn Head, Fanad Lighthouse, Sheephaven Bay, Glenveagh National Park and Glencolumbkille – for its website and social media platforms. Their itinerary was designed by Fáilte Ireland.

The Porsche crew was joined by two bloggers from Off The Path, a popular German adventure travel blog.

The bloggers then travelled on from Donegal to counties Clare, Kerry and Cork – creating stories and posts for the blog, which will be published later this month – reaching an audience of around 925,000. They will also create a suggested Wild Atlantic Way road-trip for their fans and followers.

“Tourism Ireland was delighted to collaborate with Porsche, to highlight Donegal’s spectacular scenery,” said Peter Nash, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Central Europe.

“We are actively promoting longer-stay holidays and encouraging people to come and discover the Wild Atlantic Way and the island of Ireland by car. Visitors who use a car on holidays tend to stay longer, spend more and are more likely to visit more than one region.

“We were also really pleased to welcome the bloggers from Off the Path. They have a really strong following on their blog and social media, so their visit was a really good opportunity to showcase adventure holidays and the spectacular scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way to a wide audience of prospective German holidaymakers. They’ve been sharing lots of great photos and footage – inspiring their followers and fellow outdoor enthusiasts to come and explore this part of Ireland for themselves.”

Germany is the third-largest source of visitors to the island of Ireland and one of the largest outbound travel markets in the world. 2018 was the eighth consecutive year of growth for Irish tourism from Germany, when Ireland welcomed almost 818,000 German arrivals, delivering almost €500 million to the economy.

Donegal musician Rory Gallagher cheated death after his van was involved in a horrific crash yesterday.

The former Revs singer, famous for his “Jimmy’s Winning Matches’ anthem, crashed into a camper van.

The singer managed to crawl out of the van before it caught fire in the crash in Dunkineely.

Rory, from Kilcar, admitted that he is lucky to be alive.

He revealed his van hit a massive puddle and then spun across the road straight into a campervan.

“There was a huge smash. I was knocked out and thank God they tore down the partition in the van and got me out before it went on fire.

“The poor couple in the camper received leg injuries and I damaged my hand, hips and have severe whiplash.

“Everyone says I am lucky to be alive but I just feel so down, running through all the what ifs,” he said.

Rory has been forced to cancel a number of gigs in London this weekend.

But he vowed the crash will not stop him from playing on.

“Once I can move my hand and neck we will take it from there,” he said.

Letterkenny Hospital Short Stay Ward to open this week

The Short Stay Ward at Letterkenny University Hospital is to open this week with a capacity of ten beds.

The long-awaiting opening of the ward will begin on Thursday 6th June, with a further 9 beds to be opened between October and December 2019, pending Saolta funding.

Any increase in capacity is a step in the right direction for Letterkenny University Hospital, says Charlie McConalogue TD.

The Fianna Fáil deputy obtained confirmation of the Short Stay Ward opening from the HSE through a Parliamentary Question.

Deputy McConalogue commented, “This is good news for a hospital that has been dogged by patients waiting on trolleys in the emergency department. Any increase in capacity is a step in the right direction for our local hospital.

“This has been a long time coming with LUH first requesting funding for the short stay ward almost two years ago. Despite rising trolley numbers and repeated commitments from Government, we are only now seeing the first 10 beds on the ward opening.”

McConalogue TD said questions must be raised as to why only 10 beds are opening this week.

He said: “Minister Joe McHugh stated prior to the budget that funding had been secured for the full commissioning of the 19 bed short stay ward but the latest reply from the HSE states that the opening of the further 9 beds is ‘pending Saolta funding’.

“This raises serious concerns about the commitments and assurances that have been given regarding the opening of this ward. It is clear from the figures that are waiting on trolleys on a daily basis at LUH that the short stay ward must be operating at full capacity in order to relieve some of the pressure on our local hospital.

“The opening of these beds is a welcome development however, we need to see the further 9 beds opened as soon as possible. I will continue my representations to the HSE & Minister for Health to ensure that this happens,” concluded Deputy McConalogue.

Lawyer claims jury “pressurised” into finding man guilty after weather warnings

Lawyers for a Donegal man jailed for indecently assaulting a babysitter almost 40 years ago have claimed the jury were “pressurised” into returning a guilty verdict.

Patrick Patton, of Cashelard, Ballyshannon, had pleaded not guilty to two counts of indecently assaulting the then 14-year-old babysitter in his home in July 1980.

Patton today launched an appeal against his sentence with his lawyer arguing the jury were “pressurised” into the verdict on a Friday evening when weather warnings were in place.

He pleaded not guilty to a third count of indecently assaulting another young female between June 1981 and August 1982.

A jury at Donegal Circuit Criminal had unanimously found Patton not guilty on counts two and three but returned a 10-2 majority verdict in respect of count one, following a four-day trial.

He was accordingly sentenced to 14 months imprisonment by Judge John Aylmer on April 4, 2019.

Patton moved to appeal his conviction today in the Court of Appeal where the judgment was reserved.

Newly re-elected Donegal County Councillor Albert Doherty has called for the appropriate authorities to outline a plan for the ‘urgent repair work’ that is required at the Barrack Hill play park in Carndonagh.

The Sinn Fein Councillor said it was now time for the Donegal County Council to undertake an immediate audit on the site to ensure the safety of parents and their children coming up to the summer holidays.

Speaking to Donegal Daily, Cllr Doherty said: “The Barrack Hill play park has a powerful potential to deliver for the local area and over the course of the election and in the past grave concern has been raised about the safety of the play park and the condition that it is in currently.

“I have asked and written to Donegal County Council and have called for the immediate maintenance and repairs that are required on the site,” he added.

“It is now time for the authorities to sanction funding and proper investment for the Barrack Hill play park.”

Doherty added that the main roadway to the play park was ‘far from inviting to family and children’ and was ‘unwelcoming’ for those who wished to pay their respects at the local graveyard nearby.

He continued: “The area is also an entrance avenue for those who wish to pay their respects to their loved ones at the nearby graveyard and it is unwelcoming at present and I have outlined this to the council and there is an urgent need for significant snag list of repairs to be carried out.

“We have the potential to make it a safe facility and make it an attractive invite to those who wish to use it.

“I think as we approach the holiday season we will see more families looking to use the area and the priority must be for use to make the area safe for them and that is why maintenance must be carried out as soon as possible.”

There’s No Place Like Tyrone features real life characters, but events have been constructed purely for the series. The show skips around the Mid-Ulster Countryside and into the lives of some of the people who live or work there.

The three-part series began on BBC1 Northern Ireland on Monday night, when Bobby’s scenes as a bewildered lingerie shopper left locals in stitches.
