UNDER 14 GIRLS BECOME COUNTY CHAMPIONS

Congratulations to the U14 girls who defeated St.Eunan’s in a thrilling match last Sunday. The winning margin was only 2 points and the girls took the lead with their last score of the game.  Every one of the girls played their hearts out and even with their backs against the wall, they never gave up. On behalf of Aoife O’Hare, Kathy McLaughlin, Jenny Craig and myself (Lynn McGuinness – coach) I would like to thank the girls for all their hard work throughout the summer. Thank you to Davy McLaughlin (club chairman) for organising our home pitches and thanks to the clubs who allowed us to use their facilities while Carrick Field was closed for redevelopment. Thanks also to all the supporters who travelled to the match; your support was fantastic.

MINOR LADIES PROGRESS TO COUNTY SEMI FINAL

Moville 3-08 — St Eunan’s 2-07. Moville progressed to the county semi final after a hard earned but thoroughly deserved win over old rivals, St Eunans in Letterkenny last Friday night. With the scores level at half time at 1-05 apiece it was all to play for in the second half.  St Eunan’s started brighter and led early in the second half by four points at one stage but Moville finished the stronger to win by four.  Moville used all five substitutes tonight and they were all required in what was a great all round squad performance. It would impossible to single out any individual performance such was the all round performance of the team, but goalkeeper Chloe Moir deserves a mention for her wonder save to keep Moville in the game at a time when Eunan’s were ahead by 3. In fact it proved the turning point in the game as it lifted the Moville team who pushed on from that point to win. Their opponents in the semi final will not be known for a few weeks yet.

SENIOR MEN CONTINUE THEIR FINE RUN OF VICTORIES

In trying weather conditions the Moville senior men team defeated Robert Emmet’s in Castlefin by a score of 0-08 to 0-05. Robert Farren’s men have now won their last nine league games and will hope to continue this momentum with a genuine push for promotion from Division 4 in the remaining games. The next game has not been fixed yet and details will be available on the club’s Facebook page.

Jim McGuinness is staying on to win matches in 2014.

There had been speculation on-going for weeks as to whether or not McGuinness would stay on in charge of the Donegal senior football team, but it was confirmed on Saturday by county chairman Sean Dunnion that McGuinness would be manger for the 2014 campaign.

Fans across the county drew a huge sigh of relief with the news on Saturday with many predicting it won’t be long before Donegal are reaching the dizzy heights of 2012 again.

Fans posted several messages of support on Facebook, “Absolutely buzzing Jimmy is staying on. His commitment to Donegal is unreal, many people would have been happy with their lot and just walked away with all he’s achieved already, but not McGuinness he won’t leave Donegal until Sam is back in the hills.

One wrote: ” Great news, absolutely great news, the great man from Glenties is staying on and is going to take us back to the promised land! Last year was just a mere blip we weren’t operating at 100% and we still nearly won another Ulster title, the boys will be fresh for another assault on Sam in 2014. #Buzzing

Another wrote: ” So Jimmy will be back winning matches in 2014 then so!! Great news he has the backing of the county board and the clubs, and with the championship suspended he can now properly prepare his team to win another All-Ireland. I have a feeling next year will be another great year for Donegal GAA. #TirchonaillABU

McGuinness’s main bone of contention was with the club championship fixtures, he pointed out that Donegal players were involved in either club or county championship for 9 out of the 11 weekends before there All-Ireland quarter-final against Mayo.

With the news now confirmed McGuinness will be already making preparations for the 2014 season as he looks to re-capture the Anglo Celt and the Sam Maguire.

terencesloweyA draft report reviewing Wind Energy Guidelines is expected before the end of the year, Cllr. Terence Slowey has revealed.

The Department of the Environment said that the previous guidelines from 2006 are outdated because of evolutionary issues.

The issue of windfarms has divided communities across Donegal.

Cllr. Slowey told members of the Planning and Economic Development Strategic Policy Committee during the week that the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) will also produce a report on wind turbines. The report will specify three areas: noise, proximity and shadow flicker.

The Director of Planning for Donegal County Council said that the council is carrying out a Landscape Character Assessment, a Seascape Assessment and a Historical Landscape Assessment of the County.

CHAMPIONSHIP FOOTBALL.

Our Seniors took to the pitch in Convoy on Saturday night in the eagerly awaited Championship quarter final. Killybegs opened the scoring in the first min but Mac Cumhaills soon settled down. Brian Lafferty scored a point after some good link up play with Benny Mc Laughlin, and this was followed by a goal by Mickey Lynch. Killybegs replied with a point of their own but this was followed by another point from young Lynch. Killybegs hit a purple patch in the last ten mins of the first half, scoring three frees to Mac Cumhaills one, a well taken 45 by Steven O Reilly. Killybegs scored a devastating goal on the stroke of halftime, leaving Mac Cumhaills four down at the break. The lads upped their game in the second half, with points from Marty O Reilly and Benny Mc Laughlin. Mac Cumhaills plled on the pressure and and scored their second goal, Benny McLaughlin finding the back of the net. Killybegs rallied again and this resulted in another goal for them. The last few mins were hectic as Mac Cumhaills threw everything they had but the lads couldn’t get the goal they needed.

Final score Sean mac Cumhaills 2-07 Killybegs 2-11.

Scorers for Mac Cumhaills: Steven O Reilly 0-01(45), Michael Lynch 1-01, Marty O Reilly 0-02, Benny McLaughlin 1-01, Brian Lafferty 0-02,

Hard luck to Brendan, Gary and all the lads. Best wishes to Michael Lynch who sustained a knee injury during the game.

SENIOR HURLING SHIELD FINAL.

Congratulations to the the Senior hurlers who beat St Eunans in the shield final on Sunday with a scoreline of 1-13 to 1-09

UNDER 12 HURLING

Our U-12 hurlers had a great win away to Setanta Last night. The large crowd in attendance was treated to a fantastic display of hurling. The poor conditions did little to affect the MacCumhaills boys, as they scored some fine goals and long range points. A great performance by all the players, winning comfortably with a margin of 5.7 to 2.2. We now play Carndonagh in our divisional league final on Thursday next (19th) in MacCumhaill Park. Come out and support this hard working team.

UNDER 16 HURLING

Our U-16 hurlers won their Championship Semi-Final against local rivals Setanta in Mac Cumhaill Park last night. Although a comfortable win for the home side, this was a match played in real championship style with both sets of supporters shouting their team on till the end. The determination of the Mac Cumhaills players to win was evident in their attitude, hard work and no little skill. In a fine overall team performance a few players stood out, including Karl Dunnion, Jamie DeWard and goal keeper Oisin Gallen. Among the many fine scores, Arron Mc Auley, playing at full forward got on the end of a fast ball from the Mac Cumhaills mid field, turned and beat his man before driving the sliotar to the top corner of the net. With Setanta now throwing everything forward in an attempt to put a better look on the scoreboard, the Mac Cumhaills Mid field and defense stood strong to repel a number of strong attacks. The final whistle brought with it an end scoreline of Mac Cumhaills 7.16 Setanta 2.1 and a well deserved victory for the home side. Mac Cumhaills are now through to the Championship Final to be played next week.

UNDER 13 FOOTBALL.

The A team took on Termon in Mac Cumhaill Park on Sunday morning. Conditions weren’t the best with a very strong breeze blowing. Termon scored first with a point from play and it took mac Cumhaills nearly 17 mins to register their first score. But once they settled down their were always in control of the match. Three points up at half time. The second half continued in the same vein with Oisin Gallen scoring a fine goal. A good win for the lads who remain unbeaten in the league. Ft Sean mac Cumhaills 1-09 Termon 1-02

The B team took on table toppers Downings on Friday evening at home. There was very little between the teams, apart from Downings managed to convert their chances. It was a solid display from the lads and the final scoreline doesn’t do them justice for their effort and endeavour. Ft Sean mac Cumhaills 1-02 Downings 5-10.

The patron bodies and leadership groups involved in Irish primary education have come together to form the National Alliance for Primary Education (NAPE).

The Alliance has launched a pre-budget campaign asking Government to make primary education a priority, adding that any cuts to primary education are short-sighted, represent bad value for money and will adversely affect Irish society in the longer term.

In addition to lobbying politicians and launching a postcard campaign, the group is holding a series of public meetings around the country including the one in Letterkenny.

Representatives from school management, the Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) and parents will address the public at the meeting in the Clanree Hotel.

There will also be an opportunity for contributions from the floor. Politicians, parents, management, teachers and anyone with an interest in primary education are urged to attend.

Freshers Week at Letterkenny Institute of Technology begins next Monday 23 September, 2013 until Friday 28 September with a host of on-campus and off-campus activities planned during this week.

The main focus of this year’s Freshers Week is charity and giving back.

The Student Union have selected the St Vincent de Paul Society as their charity to support this Freshers week.

It is hoped that the Student Union wristband campaign will raise €3,000 for the local St Vincent de Paul Society. The wristband campaign will see students avail of an array of discounts throughout Letterkenny shops and clubs.

From ‘Joe the Butchers’ to ‘Domino’s pizza’ and free entry into three local nightclubs, this campaign will see students availing of reduced and discounted prices, for products and services in the Letterkenny area.

Student Union President, Brian McElwaine has said that the driving force behind this initiative is to say thank you to the St Vincent de Paul Society for the help provided by the charity to struggling students last year.

He added that, as a result of SUSI grant delays, many LYIT students faced unnecessary hardship and the situation would have been much worse had it not been for the intervention of the St Vincent de Paul Society . This campaign is about Letterkenny IT Student Union giving back to the local charity.

Students interested in purchasing a wristband can do so by contacting the Student Union office, but with a limited supply of 300 wristbands, you’ll have to be fast to get yours! Wristbands are available at a cost of €10 each.

LIFESTYLE: STRONG IS THE NEW SEXY SO DON’T BE AFRAID TO LIFT THE BAR!

$

fitnessStrong is the new sexy in fitness trends nowadays but as well as looking hot, there are huge health benefits for women.

Weight training is widely regarded as an essential component of a healthy lifestyle and many studies have debunked the myth that a woman will bulk up if she lifts anything stronger than a pink-foamed dumbbell.

US First Lady Michelle Obama has said that lifting weights is an integral part of her training.

Actresses Cameron Diaz and Jessica Biel also ensure strength training is part of their lifestyle.

From the mid-30s, women begin to lose 5 to 10 percent of muscle strength each decade. A resistance training routine will raise metabolism by 20 percent for several hours post-workout.

This means long after you’ve finished training, whether you’re reading a newspaper, watching tv, you will still be burning fat.

You don’t have to abandon your aerobic exercises, just include weight-bearing training at least twice a week for 15-20 minutes.

The general health benefits of resistance exercises for women include helping to prevent osteoporosis by strengthening bones and stabilising joints.

Other benefits of making strength training a part of your life are that it helps to reduce other age-related conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis

Reasons to do strength training:

1.Build stronger bones.

2.Increase strength.

3. You’ll gain muscle and lose fat.

4. Your blood pressure could drop.

5. Burn calories even when you’ve finished your workout.

6. You’ll be a stronger woman.

But new traffic lights planned to come into operation last Friday have suffered a few teething problems.

The lights were due to compliment a new car park opposite the college campus on the Port Road.

But it would appear that there have been difficulties getting the green, amber and red lights working in order.

A spokesperson for Donegal County Council told Donegal Daily ”There was a technical issue with the sequencing of the lights and this is currently being addressed. The lights have been turned off again as a safety precaution.”

The lights have since been covered up with bright orange jackets – ready once again to be unveiled to the waiting students.

Ballyarr WoodTHEY are Donegal’s most important and ancient oak woods, and now the forest at Ballyarr is getting a makeover.

The woodlands near Ramelton are specially protected under national and European laws.

But visitors to the 30-hectare site have often been put off by the deep muddy paths around the forest.

Now however the National Parks and Wildlife Service are laying new paths and carrying out new conservation work there.

The move has been welcomed by local TD Joe McHugh who had lobbied for the upgrade.

“Ballyarr Wood is not just important from a conservation point of view in Donegal but is recognised nationally as one of the country’s finest oak woods,” said Deputy McHugh.

“I know it means a great deal to people in the area who use it often and I’m delighted this work is now underway to make it more accessible.”
