Road deaths drop to a record low over the last 10 years, RSA say

There has been a drop in the number of deaths on Irish roads over the last 10 years, according to the Road Safety Authority (RSA).

Ireland’s first road safety strategy was introduced in 1998 and during the same year, 458 deaths occurred on Irish roads, compared to 146 in 2018 – a 68% reduction.

The number is the lowest annual figure for road deaths since records began in 1959.

In 2018, there was a 4 per cent drop in road fatalities showing a continued improvement in Ireland’s road safety performance.

An Garda Síochána said the 149 people lost their lives as a result of 142 fatal crashes, compared to 156 lives lost in 141 fatal crashes in 2017.

The RSA’s international conference in Dublin will be the precursor to the development of the next Government Road Safety Strategy that will run from 2021 until 2030.

However, RSA chief executive, Moyagh Murdock, said a small number of people continue to break the law and do not care about getting caught.

“Reducing fatalities on our roads is not getting any easier,” she said.

“As we take steps to develop the new strategy we need to consider all the factors at play in the coming years such as emerging technologies and new killer behaviours.”

A man who repeatedly punched his wife in the head outside a Letterkenny nightclub has been fined €250.

Charlie Ward of The Garden, Ballymacool, in Letterkenny, pleaded guilty to charges before Judge Paul Kelly having been arrested at Lower Main Street, Letterkenny for public order offences on March 17.

Gardai saw the accused shouting in the face of a woman outside Voodoo Nightclub and then punching her in the head a number of times.

The female refused to speak to gardai but gardai proceeded to arrest the defendant for causing a breach of the peace and being intoxicated in a public place.

Solicitor for the defendant, Mr Patsy Gallagher, told the court that on the date of the offence his client had been drinking with his wife and they both had “a lot of alcohol taken”.

He added that they had been experiencing a number of personal difficulties which have since been resolved.

Mr Gallagher also told the court that the defendant’s wife is currently pregnant and the 26-year-old is soon to be a father.

Judge Kelly imposed a fine of €250.

Thieves broke into the home of an elderly woman and stole her sister’s jewellery – just days after she had buried her.

The callous robbers broke into the home of Beattie Doherty in the village of Convoy on Friday morning.

Mrs Doherty had gone on a short break after the ordeal of losing her beloved sister just a couple of weeks ago.

As well as ransacking the house, the thieves also took money which she had received for her birthday.

Family, friends and neighbours of Mrs Doherty, who has lived in the village for more than 50 years, are outraged by the burglary.

Relatives of the victim have left messages on social media offering a reward for the return the personal items stolen in the raid.

They include Mrs Doherty’s late sister’s Tiffany jewellery.

One family member wrote on Facebook “We are feeling so disheartened & disgusted that this has even happened.”

Another family member said Mrs Doherty is a kind neighbour who has always tried to help people.

Gardai have confirmed they are carrying out a full investigation into the burglary.

Dozens of people have left messages of support on social media in support of the Doherty family.

Some have even offered their own reward for information as to who was responsible for the despicable act.

McGeehin hat-trick powers St Eunan’s to win over Gaoth Dobhair

EÓIN MCGEEHIN’S hat-trick paved the way for St Eunan’s to sweep past Gaoth Dobhair at drizzling O’Donnell Park this afternoon.

St Eunan’s 3-14 Gaoth Dobhair 2-9

By Chris McNulty at O’Donnell Park

The 19-year-old palmed in a pair of goals after bagging the game’s first goal to set St Eunan’s on their way.

Richard Thornton’s St Eunan’s – a much-changed unit in recent years – were full value for the win on a day when all bar one of their scores came from play.

The coup de grâce arrived when McGeehin secured the match ball when he palmed in after a quick-fire exchange with Rory Carr on the edge of the square eight minutes into the second half.

Gaoth Dobhair won last week’s meeting of the teams in Magheragallon by 1-13 to 1-9, but St Eunan’s turned the tables on their old foes here to go joint third with the defending champions.

McGeehin found himself in a little pocket of space in the 13th minute and the corner-forward made no mistake.

With little to aim at, McGeehin managed to find the bottom corner, between ‘keeper Christopher Sweeney and the post.

St Eunan’s had an 11-point lead by the 17th minute as McGeehin struck again.

A tidy move by the hosts concluded with Carr offloading for McGeehin, who kept his cool to tuck home goal number two.

McGeehin’s three-pointer had put St Eunan’s six in front after a whirlwind start by the hosts that drew points from the boots of Rory Carr, Conor O’Donnell and Jamie Doherty.

Former Donegal star Eamon McGee almost pulled a goal back for Gaoth Dobhair. McGee surged from deep and saw a delicious effort fly past home ‘keeper Conor Harley, but crashed back from the post.

Both sides were shorn their county senior players with St Eunan’s down Shaun Patton, Eamonn Doherty, Niall O’Donnell and Caolan Ward. Gaoth Dobhair were without the services of Neil McGee, Daire Ó Baoill, Micheál Carroll, Odhrán McFadden-Ferry.

Between the 10th and 22nd minutes, St Eunan’s posted 2-7, with Conor Gibbons, Sean McGettigan and a classy James Kelly point opening up a 14-point margin.

Gaoth Dobhair were stung into life and managed to half the deficit by the time Mark Dorrian called for the ball at half-time.

Eamonn Collum drilled to the top corner for a 26th minute goal, but when McGeehin palmed in for his third it was curtains.

Dan McBride took receipt of a quick free to slam in a second Gaoth Dobhair goal 13 minutes from the end, but the damage had already been inflicted.

St Eunan’s finished with 14 men after Conor Gibbons was given a second booking in added time.

A superb point from a sideline free from Mark McHugh in injury time maintained Kilcar’s 100 per cent start to the league season.

Kilcar 0-15 St Michaels 1-11

In fact, the hosts trailed by a point in added time with Mark Sweeney levelling the match a minute before McHugh’s winner.

St Micheal’s scored the only goal of the match on six minutes when a long ball in found Edward O’Reilly who finished to the net.

The visitors also had two other goal chances with one coming off the post and the other flying inches wide the half time score was 0-7 to 1-4.

Weather conditions did not help either side all match.

With St Michaels leading by three points with eight minutes left Conor Doherty had a great goal chance but his shot hit the bar and went over. That was the best goal chance of the second half.

Both teams exchanged points and just when it looked like a draw would be the fair result up stepped McHugh with the winner for the second one-point win in a week for Cill Chartha against St Michaels.

DAIRE MCDAID kicked nine points as Termon – who played with 14 men for the whole second half – proved too strong for Four Masters.

Termon 2-13 Four Masters 2-9

Termon got the dream start when an attempt for a point from Ricky Gallagher fell short but the alert Caolan McDaid was on hand to touch it to the net.

A free from Daire McDaid was followed up by a right footed point from the same player.

Termon added to this with a superb point from Enda McCormick off the outside of his right boot.

The visitors took over for ten minutes and notched their first two scores of the day from play by Conor McDaid and Oisin Reid.

A fine Christy Conaghan score from play and another from Daire stretched the Termon lead and they were 1-5 to 0-7 ahead at half-time.

Termon played for the second half with 14 men after Enda McCormick was sent off late in the first half.

Daire McDaid took his tally to six as Termon reeled away and Dan Connaghan, a hang-time substitute, fired in a second Termon goal to continue their dominance.

Daire McDaid and Aidan Sweeney added points to open up an eight-point lead for the home side.

When John Boyle’s free dropped into the Termon net, the visitors had faint hope, but time was ticking.

In added time, after Daire McDaid and Nathan McElwaine clipped points to steady the nerves of the hosts, Jamie Crawford got a second Four Masters goal.

Dungloe got back to winning ways defeating Aodh Ruadh in Rosses Park on Sunday.

Dungloe 2-15 Aodh Ruadh 3-7

It was end-to-end football and the home side were determined to get revenge after suffering defeat in Ballyshannon last week.

Dungloe stamped their mark on the game from the throw in when Cory Gallagher was fouled as he headed for the Aodh Ruadh goals and Adam Neely duly converted the free.

Both sides hit wides before Conor Greene and Cory Gallagher hit points to put the home side 3 points up with five minutes gone but Aodh Ruadh got on the attack and their next attack was finished to the back of the Dungloe net by Shane McGrath.

On 9 minutes Aodh Ruadh were gifted anther goal when keeper Rodgers was adjudged to have committed a foul and Phillip Patton converted the penalty.

David McCarron pointed for Dungloe and Conor Greene hit a volley to the back of the net to put the home side in front on 11 minutes.

Aodh Ruadh’s Oisin Rooney levelled matters on 14 minutes and put the visitors in front pointing on 17 minutes.

Cory Gallagher pointed for Dungloe but Darren Drummond put his side one up again as the clock ticked down.

Conor Greene pointed and again a Philip Patton free put Aodh Ruadh ahead before Adam Neely goaled after getting on to the end of a long ball in from a free.

Neely pointed in injury time to leave the half time score Dungloe 2-7 Aodh Ruadh 2-4.

The home side started the second half as they finished the first.  Two Conor Greene points put five between the sides with 4 minutes gone.

Again, Aodh Ruadh pounced on a mix up in the Dungloe goals and Shane McGrath goaled reducing the margin to two points.

Cian Dolan pointed on 37 minutes to reduced the margin to one.

The home side stepped up a gear and points from Cory Gallagher, Adam Neely (2) and Conor Greene stretched the home side’s lead with 14 minutes to go.

As the rain got heavier both sides had wides and stray passes from the home side were punished by Aodh Ruadh.

A Philip Patton free kept the visitors hopes alive but Conor O’Donnell hit a point for Dungloe on 58 minutes.

Aodh Ruadh’s Boyle was dismissed on a second yellow for a foul on a Dungloe back as they cleared out the ball.

Patton pointed for the home side again on 60 minutes but Adam Neely ensured the points were staying in Dungloe when he pointed in injury time

Vital win for Bundoran in Cloughaneely.

Cloughaneely   2-07   V    2-12    Bundoran                                                              This was a key game for both teams in their efforts to move out of the lower places in the Division table and an impressive second-half performance by Bundoran was enough to give them a deserved victory and two important league points. Having led by two at half-time Cloughaneely were outscored by 1-04 to 0-01 in the opening fifteen minutes of the second-half and never really recovered , scoring only three second-half points and also allowing their frustration to boil over as they finished the game with thirteen players.                                                                            Johnny Boyle gave Bundoran an early lead but Paul Sweeney had Cloughaneely level quickly and then did well to set up Mark Harley for an opening goal in the 4th minute.  Alan Gallagher came forward for another Bundoran point in the 5th minute and then the visitors were awarded a somewhat controversial a minute later.                                                                                                                                                         A flowing move put Dara Hoey through on goal , his initial shot was well saved by Sean McClafferty and a goal line scramble then ensued which resulted in the visitors umpire raising the green flag but the home umpire disagreeing that the ball had crossed the line , referee Seamus McGonagle awarded the goal . Cillian Gallagher kicked an excellent point in the 13th minute to leave it level at 1-02 apiece.                                                                                                                              Bundoran then hit three points in a row , Cian McEniff converted two and Michael McEniff got one in between those two.                                                        But Cloughaneely hit back , Sean McGarvey kicked two frees and in between Paul Sweeney drilled low past Conor Carthy after McGarvey had done well to keep possession under pressure near the visitors goal area. The home side almost had a third goal but Ciaran McGeady’s effort was blocked to leave the half-time score 2-04 to 1-05 in favour of Cloughaneely.                                             Bundoran introduced Gary Clancy for the second-half and he made an impact right away. Cian McEniff had pointed a free to leave one between them and then Clancy won possession inside before setting McEniff up to shot to the net and Bundoran led by two 2-06 to 2-04.                                                                                          Charlie Collins reports from Falcarragh.                                                               Alan Russell and Clancy quickly added points , Cillian Gallagher replied with a fine effort but Tommy Hourihane clipped one over from an acute angle to leave four between them.   Sean McGarvey replied with two good frees , but Russell and Tommy Govorov both scored from play to restore that four point lead.          Tempers became somewhat frayed and Referee McGonagle had his hands full trying to maintain order, after a number of flare-ups Cloughaneely lost both Kevin Mulhearn and Michael Fitzgerald to second yellow cards to finish with 13 players . Gary Clancy kicked the game’s final point in the 60th minute and the Referee , perhaps wisely ended the game at that.                                                         With the other three teams in the bottom five all losing this could prove a very important victory for Niall Dunne’s men at the end of the season.                              Cloughaneely  ; Sean McClafferty , Ciaran McFadden , Kevin Mulhearn , Noel Sweeney , Finn McGinley ,  Ciaran McGeady , Mark Harley , Micheal Fitzgerald , Aidan Doohan , Paul Sweeney , Cian McFadden , Cillian Gallagher , Sean McGarvey , Sean Maguire .                                                                                            SUBS :  Michael McHugh for McGeady ( 56mins),                                              BUNDORAN ; Conor Carthy , Matthew Duffy , Paul Murphy , Alan Gallagher ( 0-01 ) , Oisín Walsh ,  Diarmuid McCaughey , Johnny Boyle 0-01 ), Michael McEniff ( 0-01 ), Niall Carr ,  Shane McGowan ,  Dara Hoey ( 1-00 ),  Alan Russell ( 0-02 ), Tommy Govorov ( 0-01 ) , Cian McEniff ( 1-03 2/f’s ) Tommy Hourihane ( 0-01f ).                              SUBS : Gary Clancy ( 0-01) for Carr ( h/t ), Mattie Ward for Walsh (48mins).                         REFEREE ; Seamus McGonagle.

Eoin Friel was up next in the 800m, Eoin had a good strong run but carrying an ankle injury found it tougher than it should have been. Hopefully, we’ll see him back in form soon.

Last up for Cranford was Oisin Kelly who was running in the 800m U16.

Oisin coming off the back off his 1500m win last week was looking for the double and he did not disappoint with a great race.

Oisin took to the front and settled in well with five of them breaking away from the rest of the field, with 300m to go Oisin made his sprint for home and there was no stopping him crossing the line first and Being crowned Ulster Champion twice in two weeks – what a great result for this young athlete.

Oran McMenamin also ran last weekend at the Ulsters in the 1500m and had a fine performance coming home in 7th place.

Well done to all our athletes who done so well, thanks to our coaches and all the parents who helped out on the day.

Calls for housing scheme review report to be published

Charlie McConalogue has said it is a ‘disgrace’ that the Minister for Housing and the Government have failed to produce a report on the review of the Tenant’s Purchase Scheme, over two years after they confirmed the review was complete.

Deputy McConalogue made his comments after the latest Dáil response he received from the Minister for Housing in which the Minister stated the report would be published “shortly”.

He said: “This consistent response from the Minister is a disgrace and is an insult to those who are hopeful that the review might bring about some changes to the scheme to allow them to buy out their home.

“The Tenant Purchase Scheme was reintroduced by the Government in 2016 and gives local authority tenant’s the opportunity to buy their home from the council.

“However, on its reintroduction, it was quickly found that a number of people were barred from entering the scheme due to its rigid criteria.

“In the majority of cases, they were refused due to the fact their only source of income was social welfare,” he added.

“However, often the applicants were old age pensioners who very much want to own the house they have made their home.

They were barred from the scheme despite the fact they had amassed lifelong savings to support the purchase of their home or indeed, had demonstrated that they had the support of family members to help assist them with the purchase.

“The Minister is failing to grasp how many people are anxiously waiting on the publication of this report. By all accounts, judging from the Parliamentary Question responses I have received, this report is ready for publication but is instead gathering dust on the Minister’s desk.

“The Minister must publish this report immediately and afford local authority tenant’s in these situations the opportunity to make their home their own.”

LETTERKENNY BOXING coach Rory McShane heads to Germany tomorrow with an Ulster High Performance squad.

The Ulster selection will take part in the prestigious Black Forest Cup, which gets underway on Wednesday.

McShane is among the Ulster coaches for the trip.

“It’s my first time to go and I’m really looking forward to it,” McShane said.

“Ulster have competed at this tournament before. For me it’s a nice honour to get to go.

“It’s nice for a coach to get the chance to go away and see how teams and boxers prepare for these sort of tournaments.

“It’s great to be in touch with these kinds of trips.”

The Ulster coaching staff is led by Damien Kennedy from Toome, who was at the Commonwealth Games as a coach.

Tiarnan Mayes from Two Castles in Newtownstewart and East Down’s Oisin Mulholland are among the leading punchers on the Ulster squad.

McShane said: “It’s great to get to share experiences with guys who have been at the high level.

“The Ulster squad has been training in Jordanstown and there’s a lot of mileage involved, but it’s a great experience.

“It’s nice to touch base with men who have been where you’re trying to go yourself.”
