Irish Cancer Society appeals to outdoor workers to be SunSmart

The Irish Cancer Society is calling on outdoor workers to be extra vigilant about sun protection this summer, as almost one in four (23%) skin cancer deaths in Ireland are from the construction, outdoor and farming industry.

The Society has teamed up with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions to advise workers on how to reduce their risk of skin cancer.

Kevin O’Hagan, Cancer Prevention Manager with the Irish Cancer Society said the dangers can be overlooked: “Figures from the CSO show that in 2016, we had over 60 deaths in Ireland which were related to sun exposure at work. That is more than one death a week.

“The dangers of skin cancer in these industries have often been neglected, because the risk of accidental death and injury on the job is considered higher and more immediate. However long-term exposure to the invisible hazard of the sun’s ultraviolet rays puts outdoor workers at a high risk of skin cancer.”

Every year in Ireland, it is estimated that almost 12,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer, and figures show that more men than women were diagnosed.

Congress General Secretary Patricia King added: “Workers need to take every precaution in protecting their skin while exposed to the sun, and should be supported in doing so by their employers.

“We would also call on employers to put in place robust policies to ensure that outdoor workers, such as builders, postal workers or fisherman are adequately protected. At a minimum they should be following the Health & Safety Authority guidelines. We would encourage all of our members to ensure they are being SunSmart this summer. It could save a life.”

The SunSmart Code:

  • SEEK SHADE: when UV rays are at their strongest – generally between 11am and 3pm.
  • COVER UP: by wearing a shirt with a collar and long shorts. Also wear a hat that gives shade to your face, neck and ears.
  • WEAR WRAPAROUND SUNGLASSES: make sure they give UV protection.
  • SLOP ON SUNSCREEN: Use sunscreen with SPF30 or higher and UVA protection 20 minutes before going outside and re-apply every two hours – more often if swimming or perspiring.
  • CHECK the UV index – www.cancer.ie/uvindex
  • Keep babies under six months out of the sun.

Mill owner to pay €767 after water level drop led to death of two fish

$

0

An Inishowen man has been ordered to pay almost €800 in prosecution costs after he was taken to court over the death of two fish in Donagh River last year.

Liam O’Connor, 65, of Milltown, Carndonagh, admitted taking water from the Donagh River in July last year, an action that resulted in the death of two fish, when he appeared before Carndonagh District Court.

Prosecuting solicitor for Inland Fisheries Ireland, Liza Finnegan said the fishery officers received a report of dead fish in the Donagh River in Carn.

She said an investigation followed and fishery officer Peter Kelly went to the river and spoke with Liam O’Connor, who owns the Old Mill and the Mill Pond, which is beside his home.

Ms. Finnegan said Mr. O’Connor was carrying out maintenance on the river, which was below the water level.

“He was asked to reinstate the water and give the flow back to the river as there were two trout found dead due to the low water level,” Ms. Finnegan explained.

“He was reluctant to adjust the water flow but Fishery Officer Kelly explained about the importance of doing this to keep the river at a good level for the fish stock.”

Ms. Finnegan said when the Fishery Officer said went back to patrol the Donagh River on July 18, he spoke with Mr. O’Connor again when he was looking at the Mill Pond.

“He said he had a right, and his family always had the right, to draw water from the river to power the Old Mill,” Ms. Finnegan said.

“But there was a substantial amount of water taken from the river on this occasion.”

Defence solicitor for Mr. O’Connor, David Henry said Mr. O’Connor and his family had the rights to the Mill Race for generations and he was maintaining it at his own expense for years.

Mr. Henry said there was no monetary benefit to Mr. O’Connor. He said there was a Circuit Court order made in 2002 that gave Mr. O’Connor the right to clean the Mill Race [a current of water that turns a mill wheel].

He said he diverted water up stream in the river and if he hadn’t done this the water would have been restricted from getting into the Mill Race completely and more fish would have been lost.

The Buncrana based solicitor explained that the flood in August 2017 had a huge impact on the river. He said the dry weather in June and July last year also affected the water level in the Donagh River.

“During the flood of 2017 a huge deposit of salts and gravel built up in the river and above the Mill and they were unable to get in to extract water,” Mr. Henry explained.

“Mr. O’Connor carried out a lot of work on the river and in 2018 they were able to get back in. Last summer there was a prolonged spell of dry weather which, contributed to the dryness in the river,” he added.

Mr. Henry said Mr. O’Connor was very apologetic and said it was unfortunate that fish were lost due to his actions. However he said it was fortunate that the loss was limited to two fish.

He said his client pleaded guilty and was very helpful and polite to the fishery officers, assisting them where he could.

Judge Paul Kelly ordered Mr. O’Connor to pay Ms. Finnegan’s prosecuting solicitor costs of €767.93, adding that if he did that in a month he would strike the matter out.

Gardaí in Donegal have warned the public, including businesses and organisations, about a new email scam involving GAA clubs.

It comes following a report to Gardaí in Donegal by a GAA club that they had been targeted by email on Tuesday, July 2.

It is understood that club secretary for the local club received an email from someone impersonating to be the club president.

In the email, the club secretary was asked to purchase three iTunes vouchers totalling €300 and to email back the code on the voucher.

The impersonator said the secretary would be reimbursed.

Before going through with the scam, the club secretary contacted the club president only to be told that it wasn’t an address associated with them.

The scam comes 24-hours after Gardaí warned people about a text scam that claimed to be from Revenue.

Garda are now once again urging anyone who receives an email or text not to respond or click on any links.

It’s that time of year again! The Madge Carr Mulroy Bay Swim will be celebrating its 10th year with a special event on Saturday 10th August.

A remarkable local woman will be remembered again when crowds challenge themselves to the charity swim across Mulroy Bay.

In 2010 the Mulroy Bay open water swimming race was one of the first of its kind in the area, changing the face of open water swimming by making it accessible to both amateur and elite competitors.  Over 100 swimmers from all over the Province and further afield took part in the inaugural event with many returning year after year.

In 2011 the Mulroy Bay swim became the Madge Carr Swim, in memory of the local Cranford woman who was said to be the first to swim the bay from Cranford to Kerrykeel in the 1920s.

To date the event has raised in excess of €40,000 for charity, with the RNLI being the main beneficiary.

This year all money raised will go to both the RNLI and the Oncology Ward in Letterkenny University Hospital.

Launching the Madge Carr Mulroy Bay Swim 2019 are Karen & Eoin Mc Ginley, Mary Boyce, Helen Carr, Christine & Ben Doherty, Megan Mc Ginley, Michelle Brennan, Cathy Carr, Patrick Carr and Demelza Doran.

This is your chance to set yourself a new challenge to swim the Mulroy Bay, or to beat a previous time!

There is a 400 fun swim for kids & newbies, an 850 metre open water swim and the Mulroy Mile (1 mile). Registration is open now at : https://mulroyswim.wufoo.com

The swim will take place on Saturday 10th August 2019 at 3pm. It will be followed by a BBQ and music in Logues of Cranford at 7pm.

Whilst there is a registration fee of €25 per person, there are also sponsorship forms and organisers would urge swimmers to raise as much money as possible for the two deserved charities. To register or request a sponsor form, either visit the Mulroy Bay Swim Facebook page or call 0861902506

Govt scrutinised for failing to guarantee commercial rates revaluation for Donegal

$

The Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government has come under scrutiny for failing to guarantee a revaluation of commercial rates in County Donegal.

Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher raised the issue in Dáil Éireann on Tuesday, questioning why Donegal was not part of a countrywide commercial revaluation that commenced almost a decade ago.

Since 2009, a different county has been selected for revaluation – with Donegal not part of a full revaluation thus far.

Speaking on the matter, Deputy Gallagher said: “I questioned the Minister as to why Donegal was not part of the counties that were subject to a full revaluation.

“Whilst appreciating that the decision to conduct revaluations is a matter for the valuations office, the policy which prescribed that all 150,000 commercial businesses be set for a revaluation is a government decision.

“Therefore counties that are currently struggling economically and showing slower growth patterns should have been prioritised above other more successful counties,” added Pat the Cope.

“Commercial rates are a grossly unfair tax and are probably the greatest inhibitor to employment creation in rural Ireland at present.

“The system of rates is archaic and far too blunt an instrument for levying taxes on businesses, it does not take on board business turnover, business costs, duration of business activity or the profits or losses a business makes on an annual basis.

“The counties which have already benefitted from a revaluation by enlarge have seen a 35% to 40% reduction in the cost of rates levied on their respective businesses.

“That being said, the rates system is still wrong and I have raised this matter previously in the Dáil, the urgent need to reform the entire system of levying taxes on businesses in order to run local authorities but the Government is reluctant and unwilling to tackle this issue,” added Gallagher

“In his reply to me, the Minister informed me that Donegal would benefit from a revaluation commencing in late 2019, and it would typically take two years to complete.

“We are one of five counties which thus far have none been part of this process, the other counties being Kerry, Cork, Mayo and Galway.

“Whilst, the revaluation has now to take place, it is as I stated previously extremely late in the day. But, it can only be an interim measure because the system of commercial rates is flawed due to its unfairness as a tax.

“Unfortunately for the businesses alone, the revaluation is occurring at a period of increased economic activity, whereas those counties which were revaluated in 2011 to 2017 would have benefitted from a downturn in economic activities, which is a key matrix in setting new commercial rates levels.

“A better system of tax on commercial property and business must be introduced by a subsequent Government, and work has commenced on this by various political parties in the Dáil at present.”
