CLOUGHANEELY FOLLOWED up their recent key away win over MacCumhaills with this hard earned home victory over Milford, another of the teams in the battle to avoid relegation from the Brian McCormick Sports and Leisure Division One.

Cloughaneely 2-11 Milford 0-14

By Charlie Collins in Falcarragh                                                                                                                                                                                   Milford will reflect on two missed second-half penalties as they suffered yet another narrow defeat – a result that leaves them four points behind Cloughaneely in the league table and increasing the pressure on them to start winning games.

The home team started well and scored the opening two points, Sean Maguire and Cillian Gallagher converting inside four minutes.

However Milford with the aid of the breeze responded with five points in a row, Cathal McGettigan got three with Luke Barrett and TJ Evesson also raising the white flag.

They also had a brilliant goal opportunity in the 12th minute when Kyle Black’s lob hit the crossbar and Daragh Black pounced, but his goalbound shot was somehow blocked and cleared.

Cloughaneely hit back and were level when Cillian Gallagher reacted quickest when Paul Sweeney’s shot was blocked to slot the ball to the net, 1-02 to 0-05.

In the 19th minute Luke Barrett went on a super long run before setting up Cathal McGettigan but his shot was brilliantly blocked on the line and cleared, a second super goal chance for the visitors not converted.

McGettigan and Maguire exchanged four points, Kevin Mulhearn put the home team ahead again but two Christopher Barrett points from play left Milford one ahead at the break 1-05 to 0-09.

Cloughaneely opened the second-half with a second goal. A ball inside found Paul Sweeney found Ciaran McFadden whose shot was well saved by Caolan McGettigan, but Sweeney followed up to palm the ball to the net and the home team led by two points.

Three minutes later Milford were awarded a penalty. Pauric Curley was fouled but Conor McHugh, who had just come on, blasted wide.

Shortly afterwards Curley was red-carded by referee Jimmy White after an exchange of words.

The next 12 minutes produced four points for each team.

Sub John Fitzgerald got two and Maguire and Gallagher one each for the home team while Luke Barrett added three and Daragh Black another for Milford to leave it 2-9 to 0-13.

In the 58th minute Milford were awarded another penalty when Black was fouled but ‘keeper Sean McClafferty dived to his left to deny Chrostopher Barrett and Milford’s chance was gone.

Maguire and the excellent John Fitzgerald added points for Cloughaneely.

Black got Milford’s final point to leave in 2-11 to 0-14 at the end and Cloughaneely four points clear of Milford in the league table.

A Donegal family faced a 19-hour flight delay following their trip to Disneyland Paris after the Aer Lingus aircraft they were about to board was “accidentally damaged” by airport staff.

Michelle, her mother and her sister were set to leave France at 10pm on Thursday night after bringing her son, Christopher on a dream holiday to the resort.

The Donegal mother told Dublin Live how airport staff allegedly “damaged the back of the plane” as they tried to attach the stairs to the aircraft.

She said: “We were told that airport staff had accidentally damaged the plane attaching the stairs as we were about to get on.

“We were made stand at the boarding gate until 3am before they made the decision to put us up in a hotel.”

Michelle continued: “We booked through a travel agency so no one notified us but they did send a text to people who booked directly with the airline and we just followed them.

“Aer Lingus were brilliant and did everything they could to facilitate the stranded passengers.”

“We were forced to leave the hotel shortly after 11am on Friday morning and there’s no flight until 5:30pm local time. So, we were waiting around for another couple of hours before we got on the plane.”

A spokeswoman for Aer Lingus told Dublin Live that flight EI 529 from Paris to Dublin “was cancelled on Thursday night due to a technical issue with the aircraft.”

Gaoth Dobhair strike again: Four goals pave way for U16 Championship glory

THE MAGHERAGALLON production line is still turning impressively as another piece of silverware heads around the back of Errigal.

Gaoth Dobhair 4-12 Aodh Ruadh 2-8

By Chris McNulty at O’Donnell Park

Gaoth Dobhair hit four goals on their way to a ten-point victory over Aodh Ruadh in the Under-16 Division 1A Championship final in Letterkenny.

Cathal De Burca scored two of the Gaoth Dobhair goals with captain Fionnan Coyle and Ronan Heffernan also rattling the Aodh Ruadh net.

Aodh Ruadh, attempting to eat into a six-point deficit in the second half, came back to within four thanks to a dramatic Danny Breen goal in the 42nd minute.

But, as in the first half, when De Burca instantly cancelled out a Damian Webber penalty, Gaoth Dobhair didn’t hang about to respond.

After a quickfire exchange, Heffernan applied the finish from close range to give Gaoth Dobhair a seven-point buffer again.

Nine minutes from the end, De Burca netted his second and Gaoth Dobhair’s fourth after Sean McFadden’s run from deep cut through Aodh Ruadh.

De Burca and Coyle landed the goals that had Gaoth Dobhair 2-7 to 1-4 in front at half-time.

The teams had been level after an exciting opening quarter-of-an-hour, but Gaoth Dobhair burst to life.

Aidan McGowan and Sean McFadden drilled over points and when Coyle powered forward, carrying from beyond the ‘45, to blast home the second Gaoth Dobhair goal, an air of inevitability fell.

Sean Gallagher came up from corner-back to put the Magheragallon men six in front.

Aodh Ruadh had a dream start when Webber tucked a third-minute penalty past Daniel Roarty after Aaron McGee was penalised for a foul on the lively Breen.

But Gaoth Dobhair issued a stirring riposte as De Burca swivelled on a sixpence to cancel out Webber’s major. De Burca calmly prodded to the net after a surging run by Stephen McFadden opened up the possibilities.

Coyle and Sean McFadden had Gaoth Dobhair in front, but the sums were evened up as Cian Rooney knocked over a routine free midway through part one.

By the time Aodh Ruadh would next register – through a Marty McGarrigle free – Gaoth Dobhair had pulled away.

It might have got worse for the Ballyshannon men, but De Burca – having collected a kick-out following a point by Darragh Ferry – shot over the top as he bore in on goal.

Gaoth Dobhair: Daniel Roarty; Aaron McGee, Eamon McBride, Sean Gallagher (0-1), Darragh Ferry (0-1), Cian McEntee, Johnny O’Donnell; Stephen McFadden (0-1), Sean McFadden (0-3); Ronan Heffernan (1-1), Fionnan Coyle (1-1), Ryan Doherty; Aidan McGowan (0-3), Cathal De Burca (2-1), Neil Doran. ST EUNAN’S scored a facile win over Malin in a one-sided Under-16 Division 1B Championship final.

St Eunan’s 5-16 Malin 0-8

By Charlie Collins in Convoy

St Eunan’s scored four second half goals to surge away from the north Inishowen men in a game that completely ran away.

St Eunan’s led by seven at half-time, with Nathan Plumb on the mark, but they showed no mercy thereafter with Sean McVeigh, Peadar McGeehin and sub Jack Dwyer on the mark with the second-half goals.

McVeigh struck to put daylight between them and McGeehin was teed up by Liam Hannigan and David Boyle – who helped himself to seven points.

Dwyer nailed two late goals to put a real gloss on the night for the Letterkenny side.

St Eunan’s hit their opening goal in the 20th minute when Boyle’s strong run ended when he off-loaded for Nathan Plumb to palm home.

Boyle had kicked two early points with McGeehin and Thomas Crossan on the mark as they opened up a 0-4 to 0-1 lead.

McGeehin and Plumb stretched the lead and they were 1-8 to 0-4 in front by the break with Boyle, again, and Cian McMonagle on the mark.

Points by Dermot Callaghan and Conor O’Neill added to Malin’s tally but, boasting a seven-point lead, St Eunan’s didn’t seem in any danger.

Tempers boil over as Ardara see off Killybegs in local derby

Ardara found the net twice as they saw off Killybegs at Eamonn Byrne Park on Sunday afternoon as one of the worse ill-disciplined local derbies took place in recent times.

Killybegs 0-8 Ardara 2-5

Johnny Sweeney and CJ Molloy secured the goals for the visitors as they proved too much for a youthful Killybegs defence on the day.

Ardara had a three-point lead at the break as they led 1-02 to 0-03 as Molloy scored Ardara’s first goal after 34 minutes.

And if it was an uphill battle for Killybegs at the start of the second half, it went from bad too worse as Sweeney superbly found the netting again just after the break.

Nine yellow cards, seven to Ardara and two to Killybegs, were dished out by referee Seamus McGonagle.

And Ardara substitute Stefan Boyle was shown a second yellow card close to the finish.

For all of Ardara’s attacking prowess, it was the performance of the defence that marked this performance.

Especially from the goalkeeper, Ciaran Gildea, who was called into action in the second half when Killybegs were awarded a penalty following the upending of Ryan Cunningham.

The well-struck effort was brilliantly saved by Gildea, which just about summed up the day for the home side despite them trying valiantly to reduce the deficit for most of the contest.

Killybegs: Kevin Martin; Cillian Gildea, Ciaran Conaghan, Christopher Cunningham; John Ban Gallagher, Jack McSherry, Ryan Carr; Christopher Murrin (0-1), Jack Statham; Shaun Gorrell, Daniel Breslin, Michael Gallagher (0-4, 1f); Ryan Cunningham (0-1), Paul Cunningham, Conor Cunningham (0-1).

Subs: Brendan McGuire (0-1), for Shaun Gorrell (49), David McGuinness for Christopher Cunningham (53), Eoin Gallagher for Jack McSherry (58).

Ardara: Ciaran Gildea; John Ross Molloy, Brendan Boyle, Tony Harkin; Joe Melly, Matthew Maher, Danny Walsh; Conor Classon, Robbie Adair; Lorcan O’Donnell (0-3), Jack Brennan, Paul Watters; Johnny Sweeney (1-1), C J Molloy (1-1), Tomas Boyle.

Subs: Stefan Boyle for Tomas Boyle (48), Peter McHugh for C J Molloy (59).

BLAKE MCGARVEY scored 3-8 as Cloughaneely edged out Naomh Columba in the Under-16 Division 2 final in Glenties.

Cloughaneely 3-12 Naomh Columba 3-9

Cloughaneely hit 1-1 in the first three minites through McGarvey before Michael Callaghan started his own scoring spree with his opening point followed quickly by an Antoine Molloy goal.

Naomh Columba led by one at half-time thanks to Michael Callaghan (4) and Shaun Hardy with Cloghanelly keeping in touch with points from McGarvey (2), Steven Ferry and Dara Ferry.

The second half was tit-for-tat as, after a good ball from Dara Ferry, McGarvey struck home from close range.

The sides were level two minutes later as Antoine Molloy got his second goal of the game.

The game seemed to be going away from Naomh Columba when another goal from McGarvey and a free from Steven Ferry put the eventual victors four up with 10 minutes left.

In another twist to the game Naomh Columba leveled it up first a goal from play by Darragh Cunningham and a Michael Callaghan free.

However, three points by McGarvey steered Cloughaeely to victory,

Cloughaneely: Oran Craig; Michael O’Reilly, Kevin O’Boyle, Shane Cannon; Josh Scanlon,  Remy Moran, Connor Harkin; Dara Ferry (0-1f), Ethan Friel; Brian Gallagher, Cathal McKeever, Steven Ferry (0-3f); James Geanaigh, Blake McGarvey (3-8, 7f), Patrick McCumhaill.

Four foxes found abandoned across Donegal have been given a soft release back into the wild.

The foxes, two vixens and two dogs (male foxes) were brought to a rehabilitation centre.

Among them was a male fox called Hershey who was found abandoned and alone in the Ballindrait area.

He was brought to the Twin Towns Lost and Found Dogs Centre and then handed over to the Donegal Animals in Need who bottle-fed him and who then gave him to the rehabilitation centre.

A spokesperson for AIN said Hershey and his three pals are now doing really well.

“He has been given excellent care by Mary and is now a stunning looking young fox and has been released along with his girlfriend and friends, in a perfect foxy location.

“Their release is a soft released, where their enclosure has been left open and they r still being fed till they are old enough to not need this anymore and fend for themselves.

“Their new home is a no hunting private property area so they will be safe there for life.”

Two Donegal members of the Oireachtas were denied the full amount of one of their annual allowances last year because of their poor attendance record at Leinster House.

Sinn Féin’s Pearse Doherty and Thomas Pringle of Independents4Change were paid less than the standard travel and accommodation allowance (TAA) for not attending the Dáil or Seanad for the required minimum of 120 days.

The Houses of the Oireachtas said refunds totalling just over €9,737 were repaid by the eight members who did not achieve their full recorded attendance.

Deputy Thomas Pringle

The TAA is based on the distance travelled from their normal residence by Oireachtas members to Leinster House and ranges from €9,000 to members based in Dublin up to €34,065 for those in band 12 who live more than 360km away.

Members must repay 1 per cent of the allowance for each day less than the required number attended, while TDs and Senators can also voluntarily choose not to accept the full allowance.

Donegal TD slams insurance bosses over issue of fraudulent claims

Insurance industry bosses have been slammed for suggesting that fraudulent claims are the reason insurance premiums are so high.

Pearse Doherty called out insurance firms for not reporting suspected bogus claims to gardai – despite one firm believing 20% are fraudulent.

The Donegal TD was speaking at an Oireachtas committee meeting alongside CEO of AXA Phillip Bradley, Allianz chief Sean McGrath, and FBD Ireland’s Jackie McMahon and Fiona Muldoon.

A video has gone viral showing party’s finance spokesperson laying into the industry bosses.

In it, Doherty said: “I’m not suggesting there is no issue with fraudulent claims.

“What I’m suggesting is that the insurance industry is completely exaggerating the issue of fraudulent claims in a way to try and justify the type of premiums they are charging, and the increases we are seeing in certain sectors.

“It is not for the insurance industry to prove whether claims are fraudulent. It is for the industry to report a suspected crime to the gardai.

“We have listened for quite a while in relation to this issue and I know there are issues in terms of fraudulent and exaggerated claims, but not at the scale that the industry is suggesting – and the last 10 minutes have just proven that.”

JACK KEANEY HAS left Sligo Rovers and signed for UCD, it has been confirmed.

The 20-year-old midfielder joins UCD on a scholarship programme having played 54 times and scored six goals for the Bit O’Red.

“This has been an extremely difficult decision to make, and I want to thank everyone at Sligo Rovers, and the Sligo Rovers fans, for all the support they have given me over the last number of seasons,” Keaney said.

“When I arrived at Sligo in January 2016 as a kid and I leave here not only having grown as footballer, but more importantly as a person too.

“I also want to take this opportunity to personally thank Danny O’Leary, Niall Harrison, Colm Jinks, Dave Robertson, Gerard Lyttle, Kevin Deery, John Russell, Liam Buckley, Brian Dorrian and my teammates, who have all been instrumental in both my personal and professional development.

“This is special club that will forever hold a place in my heart, and I want to wish everyone at Sligo Rovers all the best for the rest of the season.”

The Donegal Town man graduated from Sligo Rovers’ underage ranks and he now moves to join UCD, who are in a relegation dog fight with Finn Harps.

Sligo manager Liam Buckley said: “We are sorry to lose Jack from the squad. He has had this offer from UCD for a couple of seasons.

“He has decided, at this final juncture to do so, to take it up and we respect that decision.

“Jack has made great strides and for a man of his age he has had a big influence on the pitch, as well as off of it. He can be very proud of that progress made.

“As a club we do not want to lose any player. Our education partnership will help that cause going forward. The underage system here is very good and it shows that players get opportunities.

“We are likely to lose one more player come the end of the month but we will look to bring in one or two to add to the squad. We will update on that shortly.”
