The operation to bury the whale at Maghera Beach.

A massive Sperm Whale washed up of the coast of Co Donegal has ben buried where it was found.

The creature, measuring up to 23 feet long, was found at Maghera Beach in Ardara.

Council officials yesterday inspected the site where the animal was found.

And today officials moved in with machinery to bury the whale on site.

There were fears that the whale would begin to decay and cause a stench and attract vermin.

Instead a large pit was dug for the whale and it was buried to allow to decay naturally.

Local man Chris Patteron, who came across and pictured the creature, paid tribute to the efficiency of the council.

“They were there first thing and it was a bit of a relief to be honest.

“This is a stunning beach and people were a bit concerned that there would be a smell and a pollution issue if the whale was left there.

“It was a great job to see it buried. It’s just so sad because this was a magnificent creature and we’ll probably never know how it died,” he said.

The animal was identified by officers from the National Parks and Wildlife Service as being a young Sperm Whale which usually live in deep waters.

It is not known how it ended up in coastal waters off Donegal.

16 Days of Action Opposing Violence Against Women

Raphoe Family Resource Centre is once again taking part in the Women’s Aid National Action Campaign to highlight the fact that one in five Irish women live with domestic violence.

On Monday 2nd December at 8.00pm in the Diamond we are asking people to gather to observe a minute’s silence, followed by a poetry recital and the release of balloons in memory of the 194 women who have been murdered in the Republic of Ireland since 1996.

The 16 Days of Action Campaign, which runs from 25th November to the 10th of December each year provides the opportunity for individuals and groups around Ireland and the world to assist women in finding their voice, raise awareness of violence against women and to show solidarity with women who are suffering domestic violence.

Domestic violence is not acceptable and it is the responsibility of each of us to break the silence around domestic violence.

It takes everyone in our communities and society to change attitudes about what is a healthy relationship. Everyone has the right to freedom and safety.

We hope to reach out to as many women as possible by our participation in the 16 Days of Action but it is also important that men show their support, so please come along to the event on Monday 2nd December.

Pearse Doherty DailSinn Féin elected representatives, Bundoran Town Councillor Michael Mc Mahon and TD for Donegal South West, Deputy Pearse Doherty have expressed their sadness at the passing of party colleague and prominent republican Anthony O’Malley Daly this morning.

Speaking today Cllr Michael McMahon said: “I would like to pay tribute to Anthony O’Malley Daly, a prominent local republican and former Sinn Féin Town Commissioner for Ballyshannon.

“Anthony was a proud Sinn Féin representative and his period in office as a Town Commissioner spanned the decades of the 70s, 80s and early 90s during the worst years of the conflict in the North. During this period, Anthony held the distinguished title of Chairman of the Town Commission twice for the period of 1984-85 and 1987-88.

“In later life, Anthony suffered with Parkinson’s disease and showed indefatigable spirit and courage in battling with his illness. In 2007 he was named Ballyshannon Person of the Year and in 2010 he was named the Rehab Donegal Person of the year.

“Anthony was an irrepressible character and a huge asset to the republican movement in the area. His passing today will touch the hearts of many in his native Ballyshannon and beyond.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathies to his wife Mary, children Darragh, Patrick, Orla and Sarah, his grandchildren, great grandchild and his many extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.

Deputy Pearse Doherty said: “It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of Anthony O’Malley Daly today.

“A keen fisherman, journalist, local political figure, dedicated republican and family man, Anthony packed so much into a remarkable life. I will always remember him as a man who showed great strength of character and a true dedication in serving his local community.

“I would like to extend sincere sympathies and solidarity on behalf of Sinn Féin in Donegal to Anthony’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with you today in your grief. Ar dheis dé go raibh a anam.”

GARDAI IDENTIFY CHIEF SUSPECT IN CAR-BOMB ATTACK

The army bomb disposal team arrive to examine the scene of yesterday's explosion.

The army bomb disposal team arrive to examine the scene of yesterday’s explosion.

Gardai have identified a chief suspect after a booby-trap bomb exploded under a jeep in Letterkenny yesterday.

Extensive damage was caused to a Mitsubishi Pajero jeep which was parked outside a house on the Manor View Park housing estate off Long Lane.

Residents inside the houses close to the scene were not hurt but were left terrified by the attack.

No arrests have yet been made in the investigation.

Gardai rushed to the scene and a number of homes were immediately evacuated after the loud blast just before 4am.

Gardai cordoned off the area for fear that there may be other undetonated devices nearby.

The Army Technical Bomb Unit was summoned from Finner Camp army base in Ballyshannon to carry out a full investigation of the scene.

The unit spent two hours at the scene but later left after removing a number of objects from the scene.

No arrests have yet been made but Garda are working on a theory that the man whose car was attacked may know his attacker.

The victim is a married man in his 60s with three grown-up children.

Speaking at the scene, Inspector Pat O’Donnell said “I can confirm there has been an explosion under a vehicle in this area.

“We have sealed off the scene and we have asked for the assistance of the army technical officers in case there are secondary devices in the area.

“I would ask anyone who may have info on what happened here this morning to contact Gardai at Letterkenny.

“We are currently carrying out house to house enquiries and I can tell you that there is some CCTV footage in the area which we are also studying,” he said.

Gardai also said they would like to speak to the driver of a silver car seen in the area just before the blast.

Local Town councillor Cllr McMonagle, who lives locally, says he does not understand why the device was planted.

“The reality is that this is a housing estate and totally innocent people including schoolchildren could have been killed.

“I am not sure for the reasons behind it but such actions cannot be justified.

“We hear of these things happening in the north but not in Co Donegal and not on a busy housing estate in Letterkenny.

“I would appeal to anyone who knows anything about this incident to contact the Gardai,” he said.

County U-16 Division One Champions Dungloe

County U-16 Division One Champions Dungloe

DUNGLOE’S U-16 boys made history today by winning the club’s first ever U-16 boys title, taking the league county title with a fine win over St Eunan’s at Termon this afternoon.

It’s the first title at this level too for a west Donegal club since 1982.

The Southern Division Champions proved just too strong for the Letterkenny side, hitting six superb goals in a 6-08 to 0-11 win.

Ryan Connors’ goal in the first half had kept Dungloe level but it was Barry Curran’s goal just before half-time which gave them the edge, the goal coming seconds before the whistle.

St Eunan’s worked the ball well at the start of the second half, but Ryan Green hit two goals and two more from James McCole and centre back Mark Curran finished a fine performance.

Club captain Matthew Ward, in a generous speech, congratulated Eunan’s for a good game, admitting the scoreline was probably an unfair reflection on the game.

Board chairman Pol O Maolaoigh congratulated both teams on a great season for the U-16 boys, insisting: “The future of football in Co Donegal is in great hands with great performances by so many of the Dungloe and St Eunan’s players this season.”

MAN LOSES LEGAL BID TO PREVENT TRIAL OVER LETTERKENNY HOSPITAL ROW CHARGES

gavel1A LETTERKENNY man will go on trial next year accused of using threatening behaviour towards a nurse at the Emergency Department of the town’s hospital.

Lawyers for 38-year-old Oliver Quill made a legal application to have the charges thrown out at the District Court.

Mr Quill,  from Lisnennan Court in Letterkenny, strenuously denies the single charge of using threatening and abusive behaviour at the A&E department of the hospital on September 2, 2012.

Solicitor Kieran Dillon argued before Judge Paul Kelly that his client was denying the charges.

However he had now learned that CCTV footage of what happened on the day of the alleged offence was not available.

Mr Quill, he said, had been relying on that CCTV footage for his defence because he believed it would show that he was not guilty.

“There will be a conflict of evidence between the alleged injured party Nurse Callaghan and Mr Quill,” said Mr Dillon.

He said there was a dispute over what happened after Mr Quill was treated at the hospital, that his client was moving from one location to another when issues arose.

The CCTV footage had been accidentally erased, said Mr Dillion and that had placed his client “at a major disadvantage.”

The lawyer went on: “There is a real risk of an unfair trial; given the sensitives of the location, evidence is crucial..”

He said it was still unclear “as to where this gremln occurred and the case should be stopped at this point.”

Inspector Goretti Sheridan however objected to the application.

She told Judge Kelly that Nurse Callaghan was in a position to give her own version of events to the court.

She said the lack of CCTV shouldn’t be allowed to prevent witnesses giving evidence in the case.

“As in many of these cases it stands or falls on the credibility of witnesses,” she said.

Judge Paul Kelly said case law was “explicit” in such matters and that cases should only be stopped in “exceptional cases” and he didn’t believe this was an exceptional case.

He set a trial date for May 19th next year.

Exclusive Pictures inside John Haran’s house – and not a KFC Bargain Bucket to be seen anywhere!

DONEGAL’S biggest ever ‘Come Dine With Me’ is in full swing across the county tonight (and even in Dublin!).

The St Eunan’s GAA Club big night out involved members inviting family and friends around for dinner…and then heading off to The Grill for some grooving later.

Donegal Daily can exclusively reveal that despite rumours over the past week St Eunan’s legend John Haran did NOT feed his dozen guests with a KFC Bargain Bucket.

In fact sources say it was like being at a 5-star MasterChef class!

So good was the food that even Glenswilly star Gerard McGrenra turned up, looking a wee bit hungry.

And Mr Haran was happy to take his 20 quid for the St Eunan’s kitty – and feed the poor fella.

Meanwhile there was a world GAA first at another venue….these two spotted doing dishes for the first time.

MAN SAYS TREE SAVED HIS FAMILY FROM CAR-BOMB BLAST

EXCLUSIVE: A man said he believes a tree in his garden saved the lives of his family after a car-bomb exploded outside their home.

Alan Coyle, 59, was left terrified after thugs targeted his home in Letterkenny, on Friday morning.

Alan was with his wife Geraldine and their 13 year old daughter Katie at Manor View Park when he heard a massive explosion at about 3.40am.

He noticed that two of his windows had been smashed and there was a smell of “sweet burning” all around his house.

He called the Gardai immediately who evacuated homes on the normally-quiet estate.

Alan noticed shrapnel in his garden and was then told by Gardai that his jeep had been severely damaged.

The front of Alan’s Mitsubishi Pajero jeep was badly damaged and the two front wheels were blown outwards.

At first light on Friday morning the Army Bomb Disposal team arrived in Letterkenny from Finner Camp army base in Ballyshannon.

Garda Inspector Pat O’Donnell has said he feared there may be secondary devices planted in the area.

The army left the area after two hours after being satisfied there were no more viable devices in the area.

Alan and other people on the estate were allowed to return to their homes at 6pm on Friday night.

Speaking yesterday for the first time, Alan, a former fisheries officer, told Donegal Daily he feels the tree in his front garden may have saved his family from being badly injured.

“I am almost certain of that. I think a device was thrown at the house, hit the tree and bounced back under the jeep.

“I think it then exploded and caused all the damage. Only for it hit the tree it could have came into my bedroom and God knows what kind of harm it would have done,” he said.

Alan pointed to a number of areas of damage including a hole in his bedroom window which was hit by debris which failed to smash the double glazing.

Two of his neighbours’ houses also have holes in them from where they were hit by debris.

Alan says his daughter Katie is too terrified to return to the family home but hopes she will in a few days time.

He says he has his own theory about who is behind the attack and why but wants the message to go out that he is not involved in any criminality.

“There are all sorts of rumours out there but I want to state that this has nothing to do with drugs or there is no paramilitary thing.

“I have my own suspicions that it is connected to a dispute I was involved in. I just never thought it would be taken to this extreme,” he said.

But despite the horrific attack, Alan, who is well known in hunting circles, says he will not be intimidated out of his family home.

“I will not be moving. I will not be frightened out of my home.

“I have spoken to the Gardai who I have to say have been so professional in their approach in all of this. I will be improving my personal and home security but I will not be leaving my home,” he said.

DONEGAL BEACH DISPUTE TO FEATURE ON RTE’S ‘TODAY’ SHOW

The ongoing dispute over the closure of a right of way at Aghadachor near Carrigart is to hit the airwaves on this coming Monday morning on the Today with Sean O’Rourke programme.RTE

RTE has taken a keen interest in the developments at Carrigart since it was first featured in the Tirconaill Tribune in early September.

And after the headline revelations in the paper on Thursday last about a Government Dept. raising serious concerns about the planning status of the beach activity centre at Carrigart, RTE decided to come and meet the community and try to find answers to the crux.

And on Saturday, the show’s senior reporter Valerie Cox came to Carrigart to walk the 500 metres long right of way only to be stopped in sight of the beach by a seven foot tall gate, locked and solidly welded in a number of places.

As a Dublin based security patrol kept watch from a distance, Ms Cox interviewed a group of local whose lives have been affected by the closure of the right of way.

Those interviewed included James McCorkell: Tony and Frances McCarry: Andrew Speer: 87 years old Patricia Coyle: Donal Cullen: Brendan McFadden: Senator Brian O’Domhnaill: the Mayor of Donegal, Cllr. Ian McGarvey and John McAteer, Editor, Tirconaill Tribune.

Over two hours was spent at the scene on Saturday and it is expected the item will feature in the first hour of Monday morning’s show.

The last time that Valerie Cox covered such an obstacle was when she reported on the demolition of the Berlin Wall from the Brandenburg Gate.

The Sean O’Rourke Show airs between 10.00 am and noon daily Monday to Friday.

IMG_1460A CO Donegal pharmacist has been voted Ireland’s No1 – for his outstanding service to patients.

Tom Murray, who runs pharmacies in Ramelton and Castlefin, was nominated by patient Julie Jordan who wrote to judges to tell them about his incredible care.

In the introductory speech by John Bowman at the Mansion House in Dublin, Tom’s service to all – whether prince or pauper – was commended. The panel of 12 judges had a large number of nominations but said Tom stood out above the rest.

Proud Tom is pictured with his wife Roisin at the awards ceremony.
