Listen: Naomh Conaill manager Martin Regan says no team deserved to lose Donegal SFC final

Naomh Conaill manager Martin Regan says neither his team nor Gaoth Dobhair deserved to lose this afternoon’s Donegal SFC final.

In the end, it finished 0-8 to 0-8 with the side from Glenties kicking the last two scores of the afternoon through an Eoghan McGettigan free then a 45 from Ciaran Thompson. There will be a replay next weekend.

“Whether it got away from us, it’s hard to know,” Regan said afterwards. “Both had chances to win it, but the draw is the fairest result. We were very lucky to be only two down after ten minutes and we really struggled with the kick-outs. They had a serious press on us. It looked like it could get away on us, but we dug deep and we responded well.”

Cockhill come from behind to defeat Letterkenny in Intermediate Cup

Cockhill advanced to the next round of the Intermediate Cup with a hard-fought win over Letterkenny Rovers.

Cockhill Celtic 2 Letterkenny Rovers 1

Letterkenny almost took the lead in the fourth minute when BJ Banda was played through on goal but Jason Breslin made a last ditch block when he looked poised to score.

On 14 minutes a Letterkenny long throw was flicked goal-wards but Gavin Cullen brilliantly clawed the ball out before it crossed the line.

Cockhill were giving as good as they got and almost broke the deadlock on 17mins when James Bradley found space in the box but hooked over. Shortly after, a Breslin cross was dummied to Mark Moran who shot straight at Rory Kelly.

The open nature of the game was summed up as half time approached. A Daniel Doherty run and cross found Cathal Farren.

His shot was blocked and the resulting clearance found Banda who outpaced the Cockhill defence but his shot lacked power.

The second half started with the away side on the front foot and they hit the front on 49mins. Gary Merritt advanced on the right hand side and, after hesitation in the Cockhill defence, Declan Sharkey smashed home from the edge of the box.

Letterkenny were on top at this stage but gifted Cockhill an equaliser on 54 minutes Lee McColgan had to win a tackle at the halfway line and his looped clearance was misjudged, ending up in the net.

This changed the flow of the game and it was the hosts who were now in the ascendancy. Bradley Callaghan and Daniel Doherty had shots from the edge of the box before they struck for what proved the winning goal on 71 minutes.

After a sustained spell of pressure during which they forced a succession of corners, Peter Doherty headed home at the back post from a great Lee McColgan delivery.

They almost got a third from the same source on 76 minutes, but Sharkey cleared a Daniel Doherty header off the line.

Letterkenny threw everything at Cockhill in search of an equaliser.

Merritt dragged a shot wide when well placed before Ciaran Kelly headed a Lee Toland corner over.

Letterkenny were reduced to ten men in injury time when Chris Malseed picked up a second yellow card as Cockhill held on for the win.

Bonagee prevail on penalties to see off Fanad in Intermediate Cup

TWO-TIME Intermediate Cup winners Fanad United bowed out of this season’s competition on penalties.

Bonagee United 1 Fanad United 1 (after extra time, Bonagee win 4-2 on penalties)

Bonagee prevailed on spot kicks, but Fanad will feel hard done by after a good performance against a Bonagee side that will feel very fortunate to be in the hat for the next round.

Fanad started the game on the front foot and was putting some real pressure on the Bonagee rearguard.

On 3 minutes, Brian McVeigh, who was excellent through the game, played in Edward O’Reilly, who shot narrowly wide of the post.

Their pressure paid off in the 18th minute, when a Conor Blaney cross from wide on the left was glanced home, via the base of the post, by Dean McCarry.

Fanad were worthy of their lead and could indeed increased it just before the interval, when McCarry tested Roulstone from distance.

Bonagee certainly were much improved in the second half, and had excellent chances through Chris Flanagan and Michael Doherty but Oisin Cannon was equal to anything that was thrown at him.

At the other end, John Roulstone pulled off a double save from McCarry, the second of which was pushed around the post.

The leveller arrived in the 77th minute after a period of Bonagee pressure.

USL player of the month, Ryan Rainey scrambled home from six yards after his first effort was initally saved by Cannon.

Both teams could not be separted in the ninety minutes, so an extra half hour needed to be played.  The home side had the better of the chances in extra time, with Jordan Armstrong and Michael Doherty both going close from inside the area.

The score remained 1-1 after extra time, and so penalties were needed to decide the winners.  Bonagee had a 100 perfect record with their efforts with Armstrong, Doherty, Funston and Hume finding the net.

McVeigh and Patrick McGinley missed theirs for the visitors, so it was Jason Gibson’s side who went through to the next round.

THE Donegal SFC final will have to be replayed after a low-scoring draw between Gaoth Dobhair and Naomh Conaill this afternoon.

A 0-8 apiece draw means they’ll be back again next weekend in Ballybofey.

Ciaran Thompson, the Naomh Conaill captain, earned his side a draw, with a superb ’45 three minutes from the end of a contest that never really caught fire.

Naomh Conaill had led 0-5 to 0-4 before Gaoth Dobhair turned the tide in the third quarter.

But there was still time for Naomh Conaill to earn another day out.

A CROWD of 4,800 turned up to Sean MacCumhaill Park for this afternoon’s Donegal SFC final.

Gaoth Dobhair and Naomh Conaill drew 0-8 apiece in a drab encounter.

Naomh Conaill came from two points down late in the game to force a replay, having led at half-time.

Both teams might feel as if it was one that got away but, on reflection, will be content to get another crack.

As always, Evan Logan was on hand to capture the faces in the crowd …

Buncrana break Glengad hearts in FAI Junior Cup

THERE will be no repeat run for Glengad United to the latter stages of the FAI Junior Cup after the Crua men were beaten by Buncrana Hearts this afternoon.

Buncrana Hearts 2 Glengad United 1

Glengad were semi-finalists in the Cup last season, but are out following their loss at Castle Park today.

The visitors had the first half chance on 8 minutes but Patrick McDermott saw his effort saved by Eoghan O’Doherty in the Hearts goal.

At the other end a corner fell to Gary Duffy whose miscued effort fell to Eoin Murphy but he blazed over the bar.

Michael Carroll then flashed a header just wide following a corner before Glengad went within inches of scoring after McDermott’s curling shot went just past the top corner.

Buncrana broke the deadlock on 41 minutes after Kieran McDaid intercepted and advanced before finding John Timlin who drove low past Kevin McLaughlin.

In similar fashion they made it two nil on the stroke of half time with Timlin intercepting and advancing to find McDaid  who squared for Mikey Friel to tap home.

Glengad got a lifeline  on 53 minutes when a Stephen McLaughlin cross sum shot deceived O’Doherty and landed in the net.

Glengad dominated in terms of possession for the remainder of the game but failed to create any clear chances.

McDermott fired over from 20 yards and their best chance came on 69minutes when after a good move Terence Doherty saw his close range effort blocked on the line by Murphy.

On 86 minutes Christy Mclaughlin cut inside but fired over the bar.

With eight minutes of injury time the Hearts held on and caused a huge shock by disposing of last seasons semi finalists Glengad.

STRAND Rovers lost out in a derby to Arranmore United while Kildrum Tigers Reserves toppled Oldtown Celtic – here’s all the action from the Donegal Saturday League.

Glencar Inn Saturday Division One

Strand Rovers 1 Arranmore United 2

Arranmore flew out of the traps with a shot from Brian Procter which hit the bar and the ball fell to Michael Mc Hugh who crossed for Gavin McGlanaghey to score.

Arranmore increased their lead before half-time. The second half was very poor with very little action in the penalty boxes. Strand pulled a goal back when a Matthew O’ Donnell header found the back of the net.

Strand Rovers pushed for a second goal but a few clearances off the line in the last few minutes saw Arranmore hold out to win the game.

Glencar Celtic 1 Donegal Town Reserves 1

Glencar took the lead when Paddy Collins finished off a great move by the home side. Donegal Town were resolute however and kept plugging away in search of an equaliser. Their efforts were rewarded when James Ward scored a free-kick with ten minutes remaining. It ended with honours even. Referee: Colm Mc Gonigle

Keadue Rovers Reserves 2 Glenea United Reserves 0

Keadue Reserves kept up their good start to the season with this win at home to Glenea Reserves. The game started in good conditions and Keadue were to the fore and by the tenth minute had made some decent chances for both Peter Mc Gee and Christy Greene. Glenea had a half chance on thirteen minutes with a shot that was blocked and two minutes later Keadue keeper Declan Ward cleared off his line following a defensive mix-up.

The game then became very scrappy and the weather worsened. The away were handling it better without creating much by the way of chances. Adam Neely went close on the half hour mark with a shot just over the bar. Keadue continued to knock it around well and good movement close to half time led to a shot just wide from Christy Greene.

Into the second half and with the deteriorating weather it was Keadue who stepped on the gas, starting with a Christy Greene effort well saved by Neil McGeever in the Glenea nets.

For the next ten minutes the home side laid siege to the Glenea goals but efforts from Peter McGee, Luke Neely and Jack Doherty just couldn’t find their way to the net mostly due to some very stern defending from Glenea.

However just after the hour the deadlock was broken when a long range free from Adam Neely was parried and Luke Neely was on hand to knock it to the net.

From there on Keadue kept possession well and were rewarded on 73 minutes when, following great individual work, Jack Doherty scored to make it 2-0.

Glenea to their credit worked tirelessly and were in the game to the end, moving it about well but they hadn’t much by the way of attacking threat.

Keadue made several substitutions towards the end and were always comfortable.

Best for Glenea was keeper Neil McGeever while best for Keadue were Jack Doherty, Christy Greene and Peter McGee.

Referee: Gerard Devine.

Oldtown Celtic 2 Kildrum Tigers Reserves 3

The game started with both sides having chances to score. Sean Cleary went close for Oldtown and Lynch headed over for Kildrum.

Oldtown took the lead when Reece Short applied the finish after a fine through ball had put him in on goal.

Kildrum level five minutes later when the striker was given too much time in the box and he picked his spot, into the top corner. Kildrum soon took the lead when a fine passing move was finished off with Michael Gibson in the Oldtown goal unlucky not to keep the ball out as it trickled over the line. Oldtown came out the traps quick in the second half and pushed for a leveller.

A magical set piece finish from Joe McCarron drew Oldtown level after 70 minutes.

Both sides pushed for a winner, both squandered good chances. Kildrum did get the winner on 89 minutes when they got the benefit of a ricochet that put the striker through on goal and he finished well to win the game.

Old Orchard Saturday Division Two

Copany Rovers 0 Kilmacrennan Celtic Reserves 1

(No Report Submitted)

Cranford United Reserves 4 Drumoghill F.C. Reserves 3

Cranford rallied late to secure a great comeback victory at home to Drumoghill. Cranford started bright and went ahead after 15 minutes when Danny McBride’s left foot drive found the bottom corner.

They had chances to double their lead but couldn’t take them and were punished when Drumoghill scored three quick fire goals to lead 3-1 at half time.

Danny McBride reduced the deficit after 60 minutes to get Cranford back in the game.

Cranford were then reduced to 10 men when Dale McFadden received a straight red.

Cranford still pushed hard with the man less and equalised when Connor Shiels scored from the penalty spot.

It looked as though it would end a draw until Danny McBride scored a peach of a free kick to complete his hat-trick and earn the three points.

Drumbar F.C.  5 Castlefin Celtic Reserves 1

On a great afternoon for football, Drumbar had a point to prove after recent results. They started well scoring the first goal on the ten-minute mark with a Dan Bennett looping header at the back post.

Drumbar continued to look very dominant and doubled their lead ten minutes later after a great team effort was finished by Nathan Carr from the edge of the Castlefin box. The second half saw Drumbar resume with up the same intensity that they had ended the first half. Keelan Heeney scored a second half hat-trick, scoring his third after a Castlefin consolation goal.

Drumkeen United Reserves 3 Cappry Rovers Reserves 3

It was the clash of the top two in The Old Orchard Saturday Division Two as Drumkeen welcomed Cappry to St Patrick’s Park. The game got off to a hectic start with three goals, including a penalty, and a red card all inside the first twenty minutes.

The visitors started well and Ronan Carlin put them ahead after ten minutes. Drumkeen were then reduced to ten men when Conor McNulty saw red.

Things then got even worse for the hosts as Peter Lafferty put Cappry two goals up. The hosts were then given a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty for handball. Aaron Doherty took the penalty which was well saved by the Cappry Keeper but he followed up to scramble it into the net to make it 2 -1.

Drumkeen lived somewhat dangerously for the rest of the first half but they managed to get to half time without suffering any more damage.

They came out much better for the second half and you wouldn’t think they had only ten men. Their pressure paid off when Aaron Doherty got them back on level terms with a great free kick early in the half.

Drumkeen continued to play well and dominate the game and a large part of the second half was played mostly in the Cappry half of the pitch.

The hosts then took the lead when Marty  capitalised on a mix-up in the Cappry defence to put his side 3 -2 ahead. The last fifteen minutes were very open as play swung from end to end as both sides went in search of another goal. As the clock was ticking down the extra man was beginning to tell as Drumkeen were tiring and as it neared the end Cappry managed to get an equaliser.

The goal came when Peter Lafferty and a Drumkeen Defender both went for a cross into the middle from the right wing. The final touch may or may not have come off the Drumkeen player but Lafferty will be claiming it.

All in all this was a fair enough  result as neither side deserved to lose what was a good competitive game.

Referee: Zach Mc Laughlin.

Dunlewey Celtic 4 Ballybofey United Reserves 1

Dunlewey Celtic continued their winning form with a 4-1 win over Ballybofey United in Glentornan Park.

The hosts took a 2-0 lead into the half time interval with goals from Conor Mc Mahon and Brendan McGeady. Ballybofey battled hard in the second half and halved the deficit to bring the score back to 2-1 and put the pressure on the hosts.

Dunlewey restored their two-goal lead with a goal from Chris Cannon and sealed the win with a goal from the penalty spot from Kyran Glennon to ensure the three points didn’t leave Glentornan Park.

Castlefin back to winning ways – here’s today’s Donegal League action

THERE WAS a truncated programme in the Donegal Junior League today, owing to the FAI Junior Cup matches in the county – but here’s a run-down of the League action.

Brian McCormick Sports Premier Division

Milford United 0 Castlefin Celtic 3

The visitors (pictured) took the lead on 9 minutes when Corey Lee Bogan headed home from a free-kick. In a competitive first-half both teams were committed but created very few goals chances.

At the start of the second half Milford were awarded a penalty with which Kyle Black hit the post.

Five minutes later Raymond Foy stole the ball in midfield and drove forward to fire home from 18 yards past Milford’s stand in keeper Ryan Flood.

On the hour mark Ronan Tourish headed home from 5 yards for a well worked goal by Castlefin.

Milford battled to get back into the game and had good chances through Brandon Toye and Cathal McGettigan. Best for Milford were Paddy Peoples, Cathal Mc Gettigan and Brandon Toye.

Good team effort by Castlefin.

Referee: Mick Lagan.

Temple Domestic Appliances Division One

Letterbarrow Celtic 2 Gweedore Celtic 1

Letterbarrow got their first three points of the season at home in a hard-fought game against Gweedore Celtic. Both sides had chances but Letterbarrow were frustrated at half time not to be in the lead after two great saves by the visiting keeper from James Mc Groary and Mark McHugh.

Letterbarrow started strong and after the break and Kevin McBrearty scored a great goal to put the home side in front. Gweedore struck late and felt they were splitting points with the home side but Cian Dolan scored an acrobatic bicycle kick to give the home side all three.

A good all round performance from Letterbarrow with Eoin de Burka and Cian Mc bride shining for Gweedore.

Referee: Tony McNamee

Rathmullan Celtic 1 Drumoghill F.C. 1

The home side went into a deserved lead on 42 minutes via Bryner Fotso’s first goal in the green and white but they were caught napping just 3 minutes later as Liam O’ Donnell curled home from 25-yards, a strike that would prove enough to take a point for The Moss’ men.

It was a subdued opening half-hour as both teams made little use of possession. Bryner Fotso had a shot on target for the home side, while at the other end Gareth Temple threatened for Drumoghill.

Rathmullan started to make inroads as the half wore on and they quickly made it count. In-form Reggie Miller got his head to a cross from James Gallagher and looked to have added to his fine goal-tally but the ball came off the crossbar. With Drumoghill static, Fotso was fastest to react and forced the ball home from six-yards.

That should have acted as a base for Rathmullan from which to take control but they were quickly jabbed with a counter punch from the men in red.

Richie Moore foraged for possession as Rathmullan looked to clear their lines and from the breaking ball Liam O’Donnell wasted no time in curling an early shot into the top corner that left Shaun Gallagher in the Rathmullan goal well beaten.

The breeze behind them in the second Rathmullan, raised the stakes and began to see chances coming with regularity. Kevin Doran and substitute Mark Wilson were threatening in possession while Adam Salhi’s prowess on the left wing produced some dangerous crosses into the Drumoghill box, with Chris Hunter and Chris O’Donnell doing their best to stave off the danger.

With 11 minutes left on the clock, the Hoops had their best chance to get in front, Doran was thwarted by Michael Toner in goal, only for the ball to break to another Rathmullan sub, Dara Patton, who saw his first-time shot just skim the cross-bar.

Kevin Doran had the final chance for the home side, his right-foot shot going wide from 12-yards after clever set-up play from Wilson on the left wing.

St. Catherines 0 Convoy Arsenal 3

The home team started brightly and should have been comfortably in the lead within the first five minutes.
Barry Canon hit the upright twice and had a third attempt cleared off the line.

The teams exchanged blows evenly up until the 45th minute when Christopher Murrin was accused of clipping the Convoy center-forward from behind and the ref blew for a penalty.

Anthony Bogle slotted home to give the visitors a half-time lead. Convoy were sharp out of the traps in the second half and scored twice within 2 minutes to make it 3-0 and ensure all three points.

Goals from Darren McElwaine and a second from Anthony Bogle really stung the home team and heads started to drop. Convoy sat deep and defended well for the last 20 minutes to see off any threat of a come-back.

Dean Bonner was excellent in midfield for Convoy while Conor Doherty was industrious and worked tirelessly for St Catherine’s.

Donegal Physiotherapy & Performance Centre Division Two

Glenree United 1 Gweedore United 6

In blustery conditions, it was the away team that claimed all the points from this encounter. Gweedore scored in the 2nd minute when a cross was tapped in at the near post by Rowan O’Donnell.

They got their second in the 7th minute when a free-kick ended up in the back of the net from 18 yards through Ownie Gallagher.

Glenree got one back from a Keelan McGroddy free-kick from 20 yards, the keeper could do little about it in the 12th minute.

In the 18th minute Gweedore scored again from a penalty which Owenie Gallagher took. The away side scored their fourth of the half from a corner-kick in the 42nd.

The second half wasn’t a goal fest like the first half with only two goals scored.

Gweedore got their fifth goal from the penalty spot through Ciaran McFadden in the 79th minute and they finished the scoring in the 90th minute when Gallagher tapped it in at the back post from a well delivered free-kick for his 4th goal of the game.

Referee: Sean O’Donnell

Dunkineely Celtic 2 Deele Harps 1

The game kicked off early at 1pm in a cold but dry Darney Park. Both teams took time to settle into the game but it was Dunkineely who had the first chance of note when Jack Boyle found himself free on the edge of the box however he pulled his shot wide.

Deele Harps had a good chance a few minutes later but the shot was dragged across the goal and wide also. After 17 minutes Adrian Nesbitt broke through on the Deele goal but his effort was well save by the keeper. Deele had the ball in the net after 26 minutes but it was ruled offside by the referee.

On the half hour Adrian Nesbitt was put through by a good ball from Jack Boyle, he crossed low into the box but the Deele ‘keeper got down well to save.

The game remained scoreless at half-time.

The deadlock was broken 7 minutes after the restart when a cross from Jamie Kelly when over the Deele ‘keeper and in at the back post.

Deele got their equaliser 20 minutes later and both teams looked for the winner.

Five minutes from time Paul Murrin took a free-kick from 30 yards out on the left, his effort sailed into the box where it bounced and went into the net. Deele pushed for another equaliser but it was not to come.

THE FAI Junior Cup took centre stage this afternoon with notable wins for Buncrana Hearts and Kildrum Tigers, among others – here’s a recap.

Carndonagh F.C. 2 Ballybofey United 0

Carn had the first chance on 9 minutes when Will Quinn made a long pass down the right wing for Tiernan Coyne who squared  it to Brandon Browne but he fired wide from 10 yards.

Carn broke the deadlock on 18 minutes after Cade Cooke broke on the left wing and crossed for Girts Dzerins who headed it towards the top left corner of the net from 12 yards but deflected off the ‘keeper on its way in.

Carn doubled their lead on 37 minutes with a Cade Cooke free kick from 30 yards on the right found Conor Doherty who was unmarked outside the six-yard box and drove a low shot to the bottom right corner of the net.

Ballybofey nearly pulled one back on 42 minutes when Niall McCloskey made a long pass down the right wing to Conor McGlynn who rounded the defender and laid it off for Calvin O’Brien who shot low to the right and wide from 10 yards.

Carn had a chance to make it three on 55 minutes when sub Christy McDaid broke on the right wing and crossed for Ryan Kelly whose header was well saved by Chris Patton in the Ballybofey goal. Another chance came when Dylan Cooke made a long pass to Tiernan Coyne on the right wing and he rounded the defender and drove a shot to the left and wide from 11 yards.

Carn had another chance on 75 minutes when Kyle Cooke rounded a defender and squared it for Brandon Browne who shot low from 14 yards but was well tidied up by Patton.

Ballybofey nearly got a consolation on 85 minutes  after John Lynch passed to Shaun Friel on the left wing and he laid it off to Mark Griffin whose effort was pushed away to the post by Daniel Houghton in the Carn goal.

Culdaff 2 Cockhill Youths 4

n an entertaining clash on Saturday night Culdaff had the first chance after Aiden Cunningham fed Conor Keddy on the edge of the area and his dipping shot dropped just over the bar.

Cockhill took the lead on five minutes after Mark McDaid sidestepped a defender and drilled a low shot past Callum Doherty.

Culdaff replied well and Jack McLaughlin had an effort tipped over by Eoin Jordan before McLaughlin’s driven cross was stabbed wide by Michael Coyle from six yards.

Darren Mullarkey then played Mclaughlin through on the left but Jordan turned his effort away. They got back on terms on 28 minutes when an in-swinging corner from Mullarkey was inadvertently headed to the net by a defender.

From a Culdaff corner the visitors broke ad regained the lead when Shane Doherty fed McDaid to advance into the area and slip the ball past Doherty.

Minutes later an Eoin Deery cross from the right was headed home by Michael Owen Doherty. Culdaff then had two chances before the break but Sean O’Neill headed wide before Bryan McCandless controlled well and turned but fired just past the far post.

Culdaff had the first chance of the second half but Eugene McLaughlin headed wide from point blank range on 51 minutes.

There was little in the game then until the 80th minute when Cockhill broke quickly and Doherty pulled the ball back for David Laird to clinically slot to the far corner.

Doherty in the home goal then saved well from McDaid and when the rebound fell to Laird his header came off the bar and into the keepers arms.

Culdaff got a consolation on 85 minutes when Keddy fired a stunning free kick to the top corner from 25 yards.

Greencastle F.C. 4 Cappry Rovers 0

Greencastle started well with Gerry Gill firing a free kick wide before Nigel McMonagle had one effort blocked before seeing another flash wide.

Cappry replied on 15 minutes when Sean McBride was just off target from the edge of the area. The home side opened the scoring on 17 minutes when McMonagle nipped in between defender and keeper onto Dylan Doherty’s long clearance to fire over the keeper to the net.

Jamie McCormick fired wide when well placed before McMonagle doubled their lead from the penalty spot after Ronan Doherty was upended.

McMonagle and Conor Gillen were then off target before at the other end Jamie Murray broke into the area and fired wide from twelve yards.

Cappry forced a corner in the early stages and Jamie Doherty headed just over before Kyle O’Meara had a long distance effort saved by Doherty.

Greencastle replied with McCormick firing over the bar before they made it three nil after a brilliant team move ended with  Jamie McCormick  drilling low to the net.

McMonagle back-heeled the ball to Stephen Grant but his effort was well saved. Grant had an effort deflected over before Ronan Doherty had one shot saved and fired wide from another.

Cappry tried to respond with with McBride firing a free just wide before Dean O’Donnell and Jamie Doherty had efforts saved.

Greencastle made it four-nil when substitute Ritchie McElhinney lifted the ball over the top for fellow substitute Christy Hegarty who rounded the keeper and slotted home.

Kildrum Tigers 3 Kilmacrennan Celtic 0

This match between Kildrum Tigers and Kilmacrennan Celtic started off at a blistering pace. On 10 minutes Daire Mc Daid of Kilmacrennan missed a great chance when his effort went wide.

There were no further notable chances after this until the 14th minute when Kildrum Tigers got a free-kick out on the left-wing. Oran Higgins whipped it into the box and Damien Crossan headed it home to make it 1-0 to Kildrum.

On 22 minutes Christy Connaghan had a great chance to level it for Kilmacrennan but he blasted over the bar.

Oran Higgins then won the ball in midfield and sends a great pass to William Lynch and he makes no mistake to double Kildrum’s advantage.

After this it was end to end stuff but with no real chances. William Lynch was then sent off after receiving a 2nd yellow card.

Kilmacrennan piled the pressure on Kildrum looking to get back into the game but Kildrum held firm and in 88th minute Conor Crossan got the ball to his feet and he hit it low and hard to giving the Keeper no chance.

Lagan Harps 1 Cranford United 2

Cranford went through after a hard-fought encounter in Orchard Park. The first twenty minutes was tight without either team creating a clear-cut chance. Cranford took the lead from the penalty spot when Kevin Doherty was fouled by Harps’ keeper Oisin Crawford.

Chris Carr fired home from the spot. Cranford then suffered a blow when a player was shown a red card but they still pressed. Jack Canning had Lagan’s best effort, shooting just wide.

Cranford started the second half well. Kevin Doherty broke through but shot narrowly wide. Cranford were awarded a second penalty on sixty-five minutes.  David O’ Donnell converted this one.

Cranford still held an edge but Lagan kept going and grabbed a goal on 85 minutes.

Seamie Cullen sent over a great cross and when it broke loose Jack Canning fired home. Lagan pushed but Cranford held firm and always threatened on the counter.

For Lagan Barney Meehan and Ruairi Crawford were best. Kevin Doherty and Chris Carr did well for Cranford.

BUNCRANA moved into the Ulster Junior Championship semi-finals after a fine away win over Collegeland in Armagh.

Collegeland 0-9 Buncrana 1-14

Buncrana, eight days after winning the Donegal JFC title, had eight points to spare on the Armagh junior champions.

John Campbell’s first-half goal sent Buncrana on their way and the Scarvey men led by double scores, 1-5 to 0-4, at half-time.

Caolan McGonagle made the goal with a strong burst forward and Campbell made no mistake.

Buncrana took Odhrán Doherty out of storage to deadly affect today.

Doherty has been playing the role of an impact sub lately, but having been handed a start this afternoon, he kicked seven points as Buncrana booked a place against Tyrone junior kingpins Rock.

“I always felt that we needed to be firing on all cylinders – and that’s what they did,” Buncrana manager Malachy McCann said.

“The boys worked fierce hard.”

MICHEÁL Martin, the St Eunan’s reserve manager, says today’s final win over Kilcar was ‘the toughest game that we had all year’.

St Eunan’s retained their Donegal Senior B title thanks to a 0-11 to 0-7 win in Ballybofey.

St Eunan’s wriggled free, but didn’t have it all their own way as Kilcar stayed right in the game.

“That was the toughest game that we had all year,” Martin told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub.

“We went in as heavy favourites and it’s hard to avoid that talk. You have to give Kilcar a lot of credit for the way they fought to the bitter end.

“The boys ground it out well.”

In the first two minutes of the second half, Maguire slotted to the net after Gillespie cracked off the goal frame.

Gillespie scored another goal and she completed her hat-trick just four minutes from the end.

NAOMH CONAILL’S Anthony Thompson says the Glenties men aren’t too disappointed by today’s drawn SFC final with Gaoth Dobhair.

Naomh Conaill led a cagey contest 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time, but needed a 57th minute ’45 from Ciaran Thompson to earn the draw and a replay.

Naomh Conaill could have won it at the end, but two late efforts trailed wide.

“It was a massive battle,” Thompson – who was named as the Man of the Match – told Ocean FM’s Paddy McGill.

“It was never going to be anything other. It was a real hard battle. Both teams knew they were in a battle.”

A dour battle, in front of less than 5,000 at Sean MacCumhaill Park, never truly got going and it was a real war of attrition.

Thompson said: “We have a lot to take out of it. We dug deep. We always dig deep and we hit two massive scores to bring us back in the game.”

The anonymous backer placed a €10 Patent bet with a total stake of €70 on the last three races at Naas with Boylesports.

Solage obliged as the first winner at lovely odds of 14/1 in the 16.00 race before Mother Vincent landed the 16.35 contest for jockey Luke McAteer at 8/1 and Halimi won nicely for jockey Kevin Manning at 7/1 in the 17.10.

The punter landed a massive sum of €13,590 from the winning bet.

Sarah Kinsella, spokesperson for BoyleSports said: “What a way to wash away those Monday blues for our Donegal customer who managed to turn their stake into a profitable €13,590 on horse racing.

LETTERMACAWARD’S Carl McHugh made a stunning start to life in the Indian Super League with a cracking goal – but his new side lost out in their season opener.

McHugh volleyed home a brilliant goal to put ATK ahead against Kerela Blasters.

McHugh signed for ATK – the former club of Irish legend Robbie Keane – in the summer after three years at Motherwell, whom he captained in the 2017/18 season.

The 26-year-old is a former Republic of Ireland under-21 international and his super strike was ATK’s 100th goal in the Indian Super League.

However, new signing Bartholomew Ogbeche scored twice for Kerela Blasters before half-time at a packed Nehru Stadium. The Nigerian bagged a memorable goal of his own.

McHugh and ATK will be at home to Hyderabad on Friday.

The students and staff of Finn Valley College celebrated their annual prom in style on Saturday night.

It was undoubtedly a night of glitz and glamour at the Las Vegas themed event in Jackson’s Hotel Ballybofey, as students dressed to the nines for a night to remember.

Showcasing some suave and elegant style, the students enjoyed a night of food, music and great fun.

A huge thanks to everyone involved in organising the prom but in particular to the prom committee, who left no detail unturned, to the Year Head Ms Mc Granaghan who obviously lead the team to such perfection, to class teachers Mr Mc Dermott and Mr White for their invaluable help over the last few weeks and to staff, students and their families for supporting what was a lovely night.

Caolán Irwin brings British Championship season to a close at Brands Hatch

The 2019 Masters Superbike Championship Young Motorcycle Racer of the Year, Caolán Irwin, completed his season at Brands Hatch this weekend.

Racing in the British Superstock 600 championship the Donegal racer ran at the front throughout the weekend but was unlucky not to finish as a small error saw him crash out while challenging in the leading pack.

Having had to completely rebuild his Kawasaki following a major accident at Donington Park two weeks ago, where he was hit by the out of control machine of another rider, Caolán arrived at the season finale expecting a tough weekend.

His team however did a fantastic job to get the bike back into shape and he was immediately running at the front as he topped the times in practice. Continuing to be quick across every session the Kilmacrennan resident qualified third and was looking forward to a strong finish to the season.

A hectic start to Sunday’s race saw the Irish rider knocked back down the order, but he was soon back up on the tail of the leading group. Over the next couple of laps he worked his way up as high as fifth but his hard work would come to nought as a small error, with five laps to go, saw him crash out to bring a disappointing end to the season.

Speaking about his 2019 highlights Caolán said: “We made a late decision to change to the Kawasaki and went with a new team, Ready 4 Racing, so we expected the first couple of races to be tough.

“After that however, we did not expect to make such quick progress and I was delighted to be on the podium so early in the season. From then on we were always at the front of every session and I had a string of great runs culminating in the highlight of the year, the win at Cadwell.

“The feeling on the slowing down lap after taking the win is one I’ll never forget. I just can’t put it into words how much it meant to me to win a race on a stage as big as the British Superbike Championship.

“If anyone had told me I’d be there such a short time after winning the Young Racer award I’d don’t think I’d have believed them. Winning the award and all of the help it gave me made such a difference and I don’t think I’d have had such a great season without it. The Cadwell win was just one of many highlights, along with the Mondello hat-trick, and I’d like to thank everyone who made it all possible.

“We start now on 2020 and I have a number of options. I’ll be taking some time to make the decision on where I go from here but my aim is to go back to the Superstock 600 class next season and win it.”
