Concern expressed over illegal dumping site in west Donegal

A local Donegal County Councillor has expressed concern over the continuation of illegal dumping at a popular site in west Donegal.

Cllr Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig said residents had been leaving their rubbish at the Meenacross site for collection, despite a local waste collection operator insisting it wasn’t part of a designated route.

It is believed much of the illegal dumping took place following the departure of holiday-home owners in the area.

Speaking to Donegal Daily, he said: “This is an ongoing issue out in Meenacross and people are leaving their rubbish bags for collection at this point for a long time, for an unknown reason.

“I have been in contact with Sharkeys Waste and I would like to say, who delivers quite a good service for the area. It is not their responsibility if the bag has been ripped open.

“For example, if I leave a bag at the end of my road and a dog comes along and rips that bag open, it is not then Sharkeys responsibility to clean that, it is mine.

“And they are getting criticised for not collecting the rubbish, but what I am asking people to do is to stop leaving their bags at that site.

“When they are leaving their bags up there, for days on end, it is very obvious what is going to happen.

“I am also people, especially those who own holiday-homes, to stop doing this as well. Just because they are leaving on a certain day and the rubbish isn’t being collected for several days after that, doesn’t give them an excuse to fly-tip on the side of the road.

“And the council about a year ago told me that they were going to clean-up this particular site and they haven’t.”

The west Donegal councillor explained the local authority had agreed to clean the site due to large-scale dumping of tar in the area, but have not done so to date.

“Now, I have spoken to the landowner and he is very willing to have that area cleaned up by the council because I don’t believe it should be their responsibility.

“There is a huge issue here with rodents as well because it is attracting rats and there are plenty of people who live in that area.

“The council have to make a point of this and stop people from dumping in that area,” he added.

“I would like to see the council clean that whole area, put up bollards stop people dumping there, signage and hidden cameras to catch these people.”

Late despair as Colaistí Inis Eoghain pipped on Mac Rory Cup debut

COLAISTÍ Inis Eoghain came within a whisker of winning on their Danske Bank Mac Rory Cup debut last night in Buncrana.

ColaistI Inis Eoghain 3-10 Cathair Dhoire 1-17

However, the Inishowen amalgamation lost out by a point to Cathair Dhoire on a historic night at The Scarvey.

For Cathair Dhoire, it was also a first time to dip the toes into the Mac Rory’s waters with both having previously played at Mac Larnon Cup level.

Cahir McMonagle grabbed the winning point for Cathair Dhoire as they hit the edge.

Colaistí Inis Eoghain got off to a dream start as Christopher McDaid riffled home a goal in the opening minutes. When Josh Conlan hit a second, Colaistí Inis Eoghain were 2-1 to 0-5 ahead.

Cathair Dhoire found a groove, though, and were 0-13 to 2-3 in front at half-time.

When McMonagle fisted to the net, Cathair Dhoire were 1-14 to 2-5 ahead.

However, something stored in the hosts,

McDaid riffled home a goal and, with Conor O’Neill, Luke Doherty, Conlan and Drew McKinney on the mark the teams were on level terms.

Yet, there was heartache for the home side as McMonagle tucked over the late point that won it.

Colaistí Inis Eoghain:  Paul Doherty; Peter Bradley, Sean Doherty, Caolan Harkin; Eoghan MacLaughlin, Adam McGonagle, Caolan McGonagle (0-1); Michael McLaughlin, Drew McKinney (0-1); Kevin Jordan, Josh Conlan (1-4 2f), Oisin Crawford; Kurran Curran, Christopher McDaid (2-1), Conor O’Neill (0-1). THERE is an all-Inishowen clash tomorrow night in the finals of the National Senior Championships in Dublin.

Illies Golden Gloves welterweight Caroline Gallagher (pictured above) is bidding for glory, but will face a familiar opponent across the ring.

Gallagher will face Rosie Doherty, competing for the St Francis club in Limerick.

Doherty, though, is well known as she hails from Carndonagh.

Previously, Doherty fought for Carndonagh Boxing Club and also trained for a time at the Illies club.

Gallagher – an all-rounder who has also had plenty of success on the Gaelic football and soccer pitches – last week overcame Karolina Jaglowska from Celtic Eagles on a unanimous decision.

Now, she aims for national honours in the squared circle.

Also bidding for a Senior title is Matthew McCole. The Dungloe native, fighting out of the Illies GG club for these Championships, goes up against Martin Sammon from Galway in the men’s welterweight final.

McCole defeated Sean Butler of Riverstown to reach the decider and he goes under the spotlight down the South Circular Road in search of glory.

Former Donegal taxi driver to be sentenced on child pornography charges

A FORMER Donegal taxi driver who has pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography will be sentenced on Friday.

David Martin (52), now of 78 Sylvan Park Letterkenny, was residing at 11 St Jude’s Court, Lifford when Gardaí were alerted by the Online Child Exploitation Unit to someone using an IP address associated with that house posting child pornography images on Twitter.

Ms Fiona Crawford BL, prosecuting, said that Martin was arraigned and played guilty to the possession of child pornography at the April sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court.

Detective Sergeant Michael Galvin said officers made a number of attempts to execute a search warrant at the address.

On October 6, 2016 at 9pm, Detective Sergeant Galvin said he and other officers met Martin at the address and seized a Zeus Storm Desktop computer, which was taken to the Garda National Cyber Crime Bureau for examination.

Ms Crawford said that six video files, including one that was over one hour long, were located in a folder on the computer, all of them Category 1, the most serious category.

The files, including some showing pre-teen children engaged in sexual activity with adults, had been downloaded on the night the search warrant was executed.

In a statement, Martin admitted downloading, viewing and possessing the images and also posting images on Twitter. Putting the images on Twitter, Detective Sergeant Galvin said, brought the matter to a head.

An application designed to hide online activity, an anti-forensic toolkit and an application used to delete user activity were also found on the computer. Those applications were used on October 6, 2016.

Martin told officers that he often used search engines for the dark web.

Detective Sergeant Galvin said that Martin co-operated fully and was contrite. He said the defendant’s wife was also present and was ‘shocked with what was transpiring’.

“It was quite an emotional event for all concerned,” Detective Sergeant Galvin said.

“He was remorseful and ashamed.”

Barrister for Martin, Mr Peter Nolan BL, said his client was ‘curious what was on the dark web’, came across child pornography and ‘clicked out of curiosity’.

Mr Nolan told the court that Martin’s marriage was over, the house had been sold and he is now living at a different address.

Mr Nolan said: “He has insight into what he has done and he now has a broken marriage and a lost house. He is now living in rented accommodation and some of his family find it difficult to have a relationship.

“He is anxious to put the matter behind him, he has no previous convictions and he pleaded at the first available opportunity. He has showed genuine remorse. He is a social pariah and will be after this. That is part and parcel of the offences that he has committed.”

Mr Nolan told the court that his client had claimed to have been abused as a child by an uncle and an older brother. Martin, he said, had attended 16 psychotherapy sessions in Dublin.

Mr Nolan said that Martin’s extensive heart issues made him unsuitable for community service and asked Judge John Aylmer to consider a non-custodial sentence.

Judge Aylmer adjourned the case until Friday morning for sentencing and remanded Martin on continuing bail.

Michael Murphy won his third All-Star last Friday night – and the Donegal captain says they aim to improve for 2020.

Murphy – who admitted that he was surprised to be named as an All-Star — insists that Donegal are already targeting to qualify for and advance from the Super 8s in 2020.

“Things were going well and we took a lot of learnings from the year before and built on it,” Murphy said of the 2019 campaign.

“We were edging slowly but surely but a couple of injuries and set-backs made it difficult.

“The Super 8s test your whole squad. We’ll try to build on that in the winter months.”

Woman claimed over €68,000 for three years after father’s death

$

A WOMAN claimed €68,488 in carer’s allowance and state pension for her late father for nearly three years following his death.

Shauna Tynan (53) of 38 Slieve Sneacht Letterkenny has been given a year to come up with the sum of money to be repaid to the Department of Social Protection which, the defendant says, will be raised through the sale of property.

Fiona Crawford BL, prosecuting, told Letterkenny Circuit Court that Tynan was in receipt of €32,222 in carer’s allowance, while €34,265.60 in respect of a state pension for her late father were each paid for almost three years following the passing of her father, John James, in October, 2013.

Tynan had pleaded guilty to ten sample counts on the matter.

Sergeant Harvey Maughan, who was attached to the special investigations unit at the Department of Social Protection, said he began an investigation in July 2016 after receiving information.

Sergeant Maughan said that Tynan would have been entitled to six payments after the death of her father. Sergeant Maughan had details of the death of Tynan’s father printed from RIP.ie.

The state pension monies were paid into a joint account in the name of Shauna Tynan and her father, while Tynan collected the carer’s allowance in person from the Post Office, Sergeant Maughan told the Court.

Sergeant Maughan interviewed Tynan in August 2016, when she said she had begun the process of registering her father’s death but did not complete the process as she was ‘having difficulty dealing with his death’.

The Court heard that Tynan is paying the carer’s allowance back with €21.83 per week and has just under €8,000 repaid.

The debt in relation to the State Pension is attached to her father’s estate and has not been attached to Tynan yet.

Barrister for Tynan, Ms Patricia McCallum, said her client was had suffered ‘severe depression and was completely overwhelmed’ following the death of her father.

“Her ability to think and act clearly were severely affected,” Ms McCallum said. “She was effectively a ticking time bomb that was bound to go off at some stage.

“She had previously worked as a dress-maker and eked out a meagre living. She did everything for her father, caring for him for seven years, and she did not deal well with his passing. She is still suffering from the effects.

“None of the money was used to live a life of luxury and she is making efforts to repay the money.”

Ms McCallum said her client’s family had come under attacks on social media following her arraignment.

Ms McCallum outlined that her client would be in a position to source the €60,000 that is outstanding by way of selling property.

Judge John Aylmer said his starting point would be a two-year prison sentence before taking into account mitigating factors.

Judge Aylmer granted a 12-month adjournment for the funds to be repaid.

A dear little donkey called Barney has benefited from the kindness of animal lovers who raised over €14,800 to fund his sight-saving surgery.

The abandoned donkey was recently taken in by the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary after being found wandering on the side of a hill.

The terrified animal was blinded by cataracts and needed urgent surgery.

But the cost of the treatment was putting the Donegal Donkey Sanctuary under extreme pressure. They appealed to their supporters to help contribute what they could to help with the surgery, aftercare and travel expenses.

Barney’s story touched hundreds of people’s hearts and an incredible €14,821 was raised in just a few weeks.

Barney underwent the vital surgery in England and vets are hopeful that he will soon see once again.

Danny and Sandra Curran thanked all their supporters and said: “We are so excited for brave little Barney to have this miraculous chance to see properly once again.”

“It is now over to his veterinary team to organise the next step in his journey.”

Brolly reveals his ‘brief’ encounter with Gay Byrne on Donegal beach!

Joe Brolly has shared the story of an unexpected run-in he once had with the late Gay Byrne on a Co Donegal beach.

The pundit was going for a swim on his own one morning when he unexpectedly ran into Gay.

In his column for the weekly GAA newspaper Gaelic Life, Joe explained how he had gone to the beach near Donegal Airport and ‘stripped naked’ before going for a swim.

‘I stripped naked, left my clothes and glasses in a pile on the sand, and jumped in the freezing ocean,’ Joe explained.

Coming out of the water 20 minutes later, he heard Gay’s ‘unmistakable voice’ saying: “Young Joseph. What a sight for sore eyes.’

Gay Byrne had been out for his morning walk on the beach when he happened across Joe Brolly emerging from his dip in the sea.

The GAA pundit described how Gay joked to him: ‘I see you are making trouble again. Do make sure you keep it up,’ as he strolled past.

Joe Brolly also remarked in his Gaelic Life column: ‘He was a colossus in our living rooms, giving the country a break from the tedium of daily life, thrilling and surprising us and making us laugh or cry.’

Sheephaven Divers: Members focus on search and recovery training

$

Sheephaven diving activities focused on Search and Recovery last weekend, with one of the two annual mandatory training days conducted on Sunday morning.

Since the founding of Sheephaven SAC in 1977, one of its core objectives has been to provide a Search and Recovery Unit to assist the civil authorities in the event of someone being lost as a result of a water-based incident.

Over the years this process has become regularised by way of a Service Level Agreement between the Irish Underwater Council, An Garda Síochana and the Irish Coastguard, with a protocol established on how divers are to be called out, by who and when.

The protocol also determines that only qualified and dived-up divers can be called out and additionally they must have attended the mandatory training days organised in their relevant Irish Underwater Council regions throughout the year.

Last Sunday was the second of the 2019 training days and conducted in quite good weather conditions in PortnaBlagh harbour, where two separate teams were deployed using a ‘swim line’ technique.

The dives were led by John-Joe Rowland and resulted in surface-to-surface times of nearly 30 minutes, to maximum depth of less than 10 metres, water temperatures of approximately 10 degrees Celsius and in-water visibility of greater than five metres horizontally.

While the SAR divers on Sunday morning had to focus on their task in hand – that is following the swim line and responding to the controlling signals from the snorkelers on the surface – it was still an opportunity to observe the marine life that remains at this dive site.

In particular, the divers were keeping a lookout for the Octopus observed the previous evening, when Sheephaven divers conducted a night dive and were surprised to encounter these creatures in PortnaBlagh.

While on one hand, it has been remarkable to encounter Octopus in these waters, they do present a very real threat to Lobster stocks as they predate furiously on them, either inside or outside the Lobster pots.

All-in-all Sunday morning was both a challenge and a pleasure to be diving and either is as good enough reason to get into the water at any time.

The fifth round of the Owen McDaid (Roe) Winter League took place last weekend and the format was a two ball better ball.

Last years winners Leo Sheehy (16) & Cormac Doherty (18) played some tremendous golf to shoot 47 pts to take the weekly prize by one point form Shaun Devlin (12) & Henry McDaid (17).

Shaun and Henry’s score included a hole in one at the sixth hole by Henry and were very unfortunate not to take the weekly prize.

However, Leo and Cormac are clearly not going to relinquish their title without a fight and will definitely be hard to beat in them match play stages and are clear favourites to retain their Winter League title this year.

The final round of the qualifying stages takes place this weekend and there will be a few teams looking for improved performance to get them into the top qualifiers position with a chance to win the Winter League outright.

Cloghan public meeting to take place on Monday over disgester expansion

Residents and business owners are expected to attend a public meeting on Monday night to express their views over the potential expansion of a digester plant in Cloghan.

Homeowners, from The Glenmore Action Group, have already raised concerns over the company’s plans to build three new digester sites in the area – with fears of noise, the odour and potential pollution emitting from the site.

The group have already taken their case to An Bord Pleanála with a decision expected by March 2, 2020.

Glenmore Generation Limited have already come under huge pressure this year in south Inishowen for the spreading of digestate near homes where the stench was hugely affecting people’s lives, including cancer victims and young children.

Local county councillor, Jack Murray, said last month that a “long-term” had to be found to ensure this type of situation wouldn’t arise again.

He said:” There is a danger that this substance could be spread again in the future and that simply cannot be the case.

“The company believe that pelleting would be a better option because that could potentially stop the smell, but I would ask the council to investigate the environmental effects that could have.

“The spreading hasn’t taken place over the last couple of months but we need a commitment that it will not take place again in the long term.

“It is not acceptable or fair on the residents and businesses.”

The public meeting will take place on Monday, November 11th at 8pm.
