Business owner’s fury as dumper targets ‘green’ cafe

A Ballyshannon coffee shop owner has been forced to call out a serial dumper who is threatening her zero-waste ethos.

Fiona Mc Intrye opened Donegal’s first zero waste, sustainable cafe at the end of May. But around a month after launching Simply Green, a person began dumping their rubbish into the recycling and compost bins outside the premises every week and sometimes twice a week.

Furious with the frequency of the dumping, Fiona took to Facebook Live this month to call on the public to help her find out who was responsible.

Fiona said she was ‘livid’ with the senseless dumping. “I’m trying to do something good with my business, something good for the environment, something good for Ballyshannon. And somebody has the audacity to throw this into my waste,” she said.

The video struck a chord with Fiona’s followers and the wider community. Soon, it gained over 26,000 views as it spread across Facebook.

Two weeks on, with the dumping still continuing, Fiona is taking action to turn the case into something positive.

Fiona McIntrye – Simply Green cafe owner and founder of All Things Fiona-Lily ethical clothing company

Speaking to Donegal Daily, she said: “Once I have solid proof of who this man is I want to sit and talk to him about waste and maybe help him get a bin, because the bigger issue is he can afford to buy drink, judging by the amount of cans he is dumping, but he doesn’t have bins.”

Fiona’s zero waste cafe does not provide customers with single use cups, lids or boxes and offers liquid and dried food refills to prevent as much as possible going to landfill.

But the dumper clearly hadn’t got the Simply Green message, as the majority of their waste is recyclable cans in plastic bags.

“The irony is that a lot of his waste can be recycled for free in the car park down the road,” Fiona said.

“The only bins we have are recycling and industrial compost and there is a lot of work behind it. So when this person dumps their bags we have to wash all his waste and bring it to the recycling for him. As much as what he is doing is wrong, it’s also costing me money for every lift that the bin company makes.”

Fiona says she is changing her bins this week to install padlocks and will be setting up cameras to identify the culprit.

While she wants to talk to the person directly, she said she is hoping the dumping can promote a positive message to others.

She said: “I want to try and turn my annoyance into something positive and I want to influence people in a different way. There is a much bigger picture in this country and that is waste and waste disposal and that comes down to the government.”

‘Solicitor’ who told Gardai to “f*** off” is fined

A man told Gardai to “f*** off” during an argument he was having with a friend because he was a solicitor.

Brodie Kildea appeared at Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal charged with public order offences.

The court heard Kildea was approached by Gardai who were patrolling the LOwer Main Street area of Letterkenny on August 31st last.

Two men were arguing with eachother on the street but when Gardai told them to leave the area, Kildea replied “F*** off, I’m a solicitor.”

He continued to argue and refused to leave the area and was eventually arrested by Gardai.

The court heard that Kildea of Newline Court in Letterkenny had appeared in court previously but had been given the Probation Act.

The accused man’s solicitor Kieran O’Gorman said his client was not actually a legal eagle but works as a chef in a local restaurant.

Judge Paul Kelly fined Kildea €150.

Students to be reprimanded after drugs prank at West Donegal school

A number of students at a West Donegal school are to be reprimanded after a video was posted online allegedly showing them snorting cocaine.

A full investigation has been launched at PCC Falcarragh following the incident.

The video, which showed a pupil snorting white powder from off a phone in the toilets of the school, has since been removed.

However, a number of concerned parents thought the video was real and contacted Donegal Daily with their concerns.

One woman claimed that six pupils had been expelled as a result of the incident.

She also claimed that the Garda Drugs Squad had attended the school and the pupils had been drug-tested.

However, principal of the 450 student school Maeve Sweeney has now come out publicly to dismiss the incident as a ‘prank.’

She stressed that there was “no illegal substance” in the school.

However, she said the school was treating the incident as a “serious matter” and one which will be dealt with under the school’s own code of behaviour.

She said “Reports regarding videos purportedly involving an illegal substance and a student from our school are false, in that the view is that there was in fact, no illegal substance.

“The fact that the video portrays a prank is nonetheless considered to be a serious matter given the nature of what the video appears to depict, and as such, it will be dealt with fully under the school’s Code of Behaviour.

“The gardaí have been fully involved in the school’s investigation of these reports. We trust this clarifies the position, and we confirm our school’s position in tackling any such issues.”

Gardai have confirmed they attended the school on November 22nd to issue guidance to students.

Revenue rises to €45.2m at Donegal Investment Group

Revenue rose by 11.4% to €45.2m last year at Donegal Investment Group, formerly Donegal Creameries.

The group enjoyed soaring segmental profit, with a 47% increase to €4m in the year ending 31 August 2019.

The strong performance has been put down to continued double-digit growth in the speciality dairy business Nomadic, as well as strong demand for their produce businesses’ seed potato varieties.

Group profit from operating activities (before exceptionals) increased by 61.6% (€1.3m) for the year to €3.4m.

The latest financial results report from Donegal Investment Group, published today, says the sale of its animal feeds business Robert Smyths and Sons was a success.

DIG Chairman Geoffrey Vance commented: “The Board is very pleased by the performance of the Group’s trading businesses over the course of the year as well as the successful completion of the sale of our animal feeds business Smyths.

“Adverse weather conditions in European growing areas impacted the 2018/2019 potato crops which led to poor availability of seed in the wider market. Our seed potato business experienced growing demand for its proprietary varieties which combined with strong trading margins delivered an excellent performance for the year. We continue to invest in the development of innovative seed potato with six new varieties commencing commercialisation in the coming year.

“Speciality dairy continued to experience double digit (volume and sales) growth in both the UK and Ireland in 2019 with a significant capital project currently underway which will double capacity in our Killygordon based business.

“Overall, Group revenue was €45.2m for the year with operating profit of €3.4m. This resulted in adjusted earnings per share of 89.3c, an increase of 61.9c on the 12 months to 31 August 2018.

“Following the completion of the sale of Smyths and the underlying performance of our trading businesses the Group had a cash position, net of debt, of €21.3m at year-end with a net asset value per share of €8.03, an increase of €1.19 per share on the prior year.

“The Group will continue its strategic review to assess all options available to the Group to maximise shareholder value, and shareholders will be updated at the appropriate time.”

€3M plan aims to reduce Letterkenny traffic jams

A new traffic management project for Letterkenny could see roundabouts being replaced and traffic lights installed in one of the town’s most problematic areas.

The Polestar Roundabout and Ballyraine areas of Letterkenny have been identified as key areas in need of traffic lights under a larger council project, which has been estimated at €3M.

‘Urgent advanced measures’ involve replacing the Ballyraine and Creamery roundabouts with traffic controlled junctions. Traffic lights would also be installed on the Polestar Roundabout together with other ancillary works.

Chief Executive of Donegal County Council Seamus Neely said the preliminary appraisal for the Letterkenny Traffic Management project is currently being considered by the Department of Transport.

Due to the high level of traffic congestion in Letterkenny, Mr Neely proposed that a subset of the overall project is carried out sooner at Ballyraine and the Polestar.

Writing in the Chief Executive’s Management Report, Mr Neely said: “Traffic congestion in Letterkenny is increasing in regularity and frequently leads to long delays to traffic in the town.

“This underlines a need for some urgent advance measures and in this context a subset of the overall project is now being proposed.”

The advanced works will cost an estimated €500,000.

Ciaran Gallagher joins the Finn Harps departures

GOALKEEPER Ciaran Gallagher has become the latest player to confirm his departure from Finn Harps.

The Raphoe man had a frustrating season with injury and has signalled his intention to leave the club.

Gallagher first played for Harps in April 2009 and made 251 appearances for the club.

He had one season away from Finn Park when he played for Derry City in 2014, but he was lured back to Ballybofey by Ollie Horgan for the successful promotion push in 2015.

Gallagher’s exit comes just a day after experienced defender Keith Cowan bid farewell.

“A big thanks to Finn Harps for the 10 seasons I have spent with them, it was a pleasure to play for a club I supported as a boy,” Gallagher said.

“Special thanks to Ollie, the club is very lucky to have him at the Club!”

The former Republic of Ireland underage international says he will concentrate on his goalkeeping academy.

He said: “But on a positive note, from the time I have had on the sidelines it has given me time for myself and my father Aidan to grow our Academy into one of the finest Goalkeeping Academies around.

“It is only the start and we have massive plans and ideas for our Academy.

“At the moment my passion lies in coaching and developing young keepers and players, providing them with the knowledge it takes to progress

“For now it’s time to get the gloves on, get on the pitch and watch the next Shay Given or Marie Hourihan develop.”

Daniel reveals he got stung during the property crash

Daniel O’Donnell has revealed he got stung in the property crash.

The Donegal singer spoke of how he got talked into buying property during the Celtic Tiger, but lost out badly in the economic collapse.

The star said he doesn’t feel sorry for himself over the ordeal

Daniel told the Irish Sun: “We bought a luxury apartment in Dublin and a few other places as the advice we got at the time was, you couldn’t put your money into anything safer than bricks and mortar.

“We bought at the height but now this stuff isn’t worth anything like the price we paid for it.”

The singer said he can’t put a value on how much he lost on property as he hasn’t sold any of it. He said: “We’re not suffering because of it, we are not on the bread line.

“There’s a lot people worse off than we are, so we don’t feel sorry for ourselves.

“I don’t think anyone could have envisaged what happened.”

The country star said he felt fortunate he could make up for his losses, announcing dates in the INEC Killarney, Co Kerry, in September.

Nothing to separate Loreto and Deele in schools derby

A CRACKING Donegal Schools Under-17 match finished all square between Loreto, Letterkenny and Deele College this afternoon.

Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny 2 Deele College, Raphoe 2

There was nothing to separate two evenly-matched teams in an end-to-end contest.

The game was in the balance right until the end with a share of the spoils deserved.

Deele took the lead when Ella McHugh was quickest to react in a crowded goalmouth. McHugh, daughter of former Finn Harps star Kevin, fired past Emma Doherty from close range.

Nicole McDaid tested Tianna Hannigan from just inside the box, but the young Deele ‘keeper saved superbly.

Deele, with the likes of Ellie Barron, McHugh – who always looked dangerous – and Iesha Kelly involved, threatened to get in behind again, but Caitlin Hume and Aibhe McDaid had the Loreto defence well marshalled.

Hannah Hopkins and Gaby O’Donnell were dangerous for the home side, but Deele’s defence stood strong.

Loreto drew level just 40 seconds into the second half when Katelyn Doherty struck.

Hannah Hopkins almost put Loreto ahead, but her shot from the right-hand side crashed against the bar.

While the in-form Hannigan kept Deele on level terms, Loreto were in front when Doherty raced in to score her second.

Loreto looked like they might hang on for a win, but Deele levelled the game when Lucy Canning shot home from a 20-yard free kick.

There was chances at either end and Loreto might have snatched it. Ailisha Tobin fired just wide after a strong run through the middle by the lively Amy Callaghan.

Right at the end, Aibhe McDaid powered her way through from defence and another good effort by Tobin from distance came back from the crossbar.

How bazaar! Inishowen has some of the best ones for Christmas

There is no better way to get into the festive spirit this year than to visit a local Christmas Bazaar.

They’re truly magical places that make you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside with fairy lights, Christmas decorations, festive stalls, raffles and delicious treats!

Two of the favourite annual Christmas Bazaars taking place across Inishowen this year will be in the Colgan Hall, Carndonagh from 8pm on Tuesday 3rd December and in the Malin Head Community Centre from 2pm on Sunday December 8th 2019.

Supervisor at Colgan Hall Community and Resource Centre, Jeanette Longwill, said the annual Christmas Bazaar in the Colgan Hall is our main fundraising event of the year – and one of the best in Inishowen!

“Final preparations are currently under way with our hall promising a fantastic festive event full of wonderful prizes to be won – including a Dyson V7 vacuum cleaner, 32” Smart Television, kitchen appliances, Berg Go-Kart and of course our famous hampers packed with luxury Christmas food and drink.

“I’d therefore encourage as many people as possible to come along and support our event!”

Manager of Malin Head Community Centre, Ali Farren added: “Our Christmas Bazaar has been on the go for almost 40 years now – and every festive season is a major fundraiser for the Malin Head Community Association.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to say that our Christmas Bazaar wouldn’t be a success without the fantastic donations from our local businesses and the wonderful support of the public who always fill the hall!

“All money raised from the Christmas Bazaar also importantly helps to sustain our centre and reduce our debts.”

Shauna McClenaghan, Joint CEO of Inishowen Development Partnership (IDP), which has worked with both Colgan Hall and Malin Head Community Centre over the years, said Christmas Bazaars are an excellent way of showcasing local products and encouraging people to buy local.

“The Christmas Bazaars in the Colgan Hall and Malin Head Community Centre this year promise to be great family events and the perfect way to start the festive season”, she said.

“Importantly, Christmas Bazaars across the Inishowen peninsula are growing from strength to strength and are such a welcome addition to our festive calendar.

“Indeed, they are not only providing a great opportunity for people to buy a wide range of festive gifts and sample local produce, but also to meet up with family and friends and win some fantastic prizes!

“They’re also a magical mix of all things Christmas whilst at the same time supporting local community groups, businesses and craft producers.

“I’m therefore looking forward to seeing the community come out to support our local bazaars this year which are guaranteed to be great festive celebrations for the whole family to enjoy!”

For further information on this year’s Christmas Bazaars and events over the festive season in the Colgan Hall and the Malin Head Community Centre find us on Facebook @colgan.hall and @malinheadcommunity
