Gardaí are urging members of the public to submit any video footage which may have been taken during a shooting incident in Glenties on Saturday morning last.

Investigations are continuing into the incident in which shots were fired on Main Street Glenties and Mill Road at around midnight on Friday night/Saturday morning. An armed man shot in the direction of gardaí causing damage to a patrol car and a civilian’s car.

An incident room has been set up at Ballyshannon Garda Station as investigations continue and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Three men were arrested as a result of the incident. Two men have since been released and the third man appeared in court on Monday.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who might have ‘dash cam’ footage, cctv footage or mobile phone recordings to make contact with them at Ballyshannon Garda Station on 071 98 58530.

Gardaí also denied local rumours that the man arrested had connections to a circus which was visiting the area.

Twenty-two year old Stephen Dowling appeared at Letterkenny District Court on Monday charged with discharging a firearm being reckless as to whether any person was injured or not.

The alleged offences, under the Firearms and Offensive Weapons Act, 1990, happened at Mill Rd, Drumnasillagh, Glenties, and Main Street, Gortnamucklagh, Glenties.

The court was told that Dowling, of Burren Road, Carlow, was arrested after he had visited Donegal on a hunting trip with his uncle and nephew.

Dowling was granted bail under a number of conditions. Judge Paul Kelly ordered him to provide his own cash bail of €2,000, an independent surety of €2,000, to reside at the address provided and to stay out of Co Donegal, apart from court appearances.

He also ordered him to observe a daily curfew between 10pm and 7am, sign on weekly at Carlow Garda station and that he surrender his passport.

The case was adjourned until April 27th to allow for the directions of the DPP.

Gardaí probe suspected arson in residential area of Letterkenny

Gardaí are investigating a suspected arson attack in Letterkenny last Sunday.

A domestic shed was destroyed after catching fire at a yard in the residential area of Glencar at around 5.30pm.

Fire services and gardaí attended the scene and the fire was eventually extinguished.

But the large number of homes in the area could have led to a more serious incident if the fire had spread, according to Gardaí.

“The possibility of the fire being started deliberately has not been ruled out,” confirmed Garda Claire Rafferty.

Gardaí are appealing to the public to assist with the investigation into the criminal damage incident. If anyone has any information, they are asked to call Letterkenny Gardaí on 074 91 67100

Donegal crowned All Ireland Darts Champions 2020

Donegal were crowned All Ireland Darts Champions 2020 this weekend after winning the All Ireland Inter County Championship in Ennis, Co. Clare.

Donegal had a difficult start in Saturday’s first stage of the competition after losing their first match 7-6 to Wicklow. With what started with a 5 leg losing streak they managed to come back to 6-6 and just lost out on the last leg.

Their team talk after that defeat must have made an impact as they breezed through their next match winning 10-3 against Cavan. They topped their group and were buzzing for Sundays Final stages.

The competition started at 11am but the players were up and at it from 8 or before to get the practice in for the day ahead! First up was Kerry. Donegal led the way through this knock out match winning with a nice 7-5 victory.

The quarter final saw them up against Mayo. Both teams had met in last months West Coast Challange in the final where Donegal came back from 4-2 down to beat them 7-4. Mayo were not likely to be an easy game. Mayo started strong with a 0-2 lead. Donegal’s Adrian Divine won the 3rd game. But Mayo won again leaving Donegal on 1-3.

But Gerard Mc Glynn and Reece Brennan hammered in two 2 nil games to bring it all even at 3-3. John Flood and Charlie Grant gave Donegal a nice 5-3 lead with 2 more strong 2-0 game wins. Mayo got 1 more game back but Michael Leech and Jordan Boyce were on the team sheet to make sure Donegal got the result to make it a 7-5 win and a spot in the Semi final.

With only an hour break, a quick bite to eat was had before the semi-final started with a fired up Cork Team!

The anti was definitely upped in this state where it was best of 5 legs to win a game. Cork started strong here with the first game.

Andy McLaughlin won his game to make it all square. Donegal lost the next 2 games making the gap that bit bigger at 1-3. Gerard McGlynn got a mighty game back to bring us only 1 behind. But another strong game from Cork saw us 2-4 down. But John Flood and Charlie Grant were the on the ockey next and brought us back to all square at 4-4. Tensions were running high and the crowd were getting louder as both team were cheered on to make it to the Final. Cork went ahead again before Michael Leech, Jordan Boyce and Clive Aiken took to the ockey and claimed Donegals place in the final!

Kilkenny and wexford were fighting it out beside our battle station for a place in the final. Shouts and cheers matched that of Donegal when Wexford took their place in the final.

The final was ON.

Can you imagine the pressure? Of course you can. We’ve all been to finals and nearly had heart attacks when our side has left it to the last minute of the match to decide a game. Nerves are all part of the game.

But when those nerves have to be steadied so your hand wont shake even a milimetre so that 60 you were aiming for wont go into the 3 which is only 8mm wide, well that takes some doing. Fair play to all dart players. A game of endurance and precision.

Donegal started the final the way they intended, strong and determined. John flood took to the stage and gave Donegal the mighty 1st point. Andy Mc laughlin ran away with a 3-0 game giving Donegal 2 on the trot. Joe flood made it 3-0 and Donegal had a nice lead. Sean Wilson lost his game giving Wexford their 1st point. But the troups rallied and support was high as Adrian Divine took to the stage where he made it 4-1 for Donegal. Reece Brennan was in top form as he took another leg from Wexford and made it 5-1. Gerard Mc Glynn wasnt going to see the final lose him a match this weekend and for a 100% record he made it 6-1. We only needed 1 more to claim the title.

Cartha Boyle was next up but his Wexford opponent upped the anti and took 1 back for Wexford. Charlie Grants roaring support from the crowd was enough to spur him on to win the game for his teammates. With a 132 check out in the 3rd leg and a 15 darter to win the match he certainly gave his all to crown Donegal the All Ireland Champions !

Well done to Wexford for a great game in the final. Big thanks to INDO for a well run weekend.

A mighty thanks to our fantastic supporters who travelled all the way down for the weekend. Many thanks also to our sponsors.

St Eunan’s hold off Crana to capture Ulster Schools crown

GOALS by Dylan Doogan and Jack Dwyer fired St Eunan’s College to glory in today’s Ulster Senior Schools Cup final at The Brandywell.

St Eunan’s College, Letterkenny 2 Crana College, Buncrana 0

By Charlie Collins at The Brandywell

The goals came in either half as Paul Browne’s men overcame a Crana side that had lowered the colours of perennial All-Ireland hopefuls Carndonagh Community School in the semi-finals.

After a fairly even opening, St Eunan’s hit the front on 12 minutes. Oran Brogan knocked a ball wide, catching out the Buncrana rearguard. Dylan Doogan raced in from the right-hand between the centre-backs before drilling a superb effort across the ‘keeper and into the far corner.

Just two minutes later, a low cross from the always-dangerous Institute ace Brogan found Jack Dwyer. His first shot was deflected onto the post by the ‘keeper while the follow-up was blocked on the line by Niall McGlynn.

Those incidents apart, there was little goal-mouth incident until the 40th minute Ryan Wilson’s cross-cum-shot almost caught out Matthew Whoriskey, but the St Eunan’s ‘keeper readjusted his feet to make the save.

Four minutes into the second half, Joel Gorman’s cracking free-kick from 25 yards was brilliant saved by Ethan Caldwell, who arched over the crossbar.

Just before the hour, another Brogan cross found Jack Murphy, who volleyed over.

Buncrana had a big chance to draw level. Niall McGlynn’s long-rang free met by Kyle McCann, but his free header from 12 yards was narrowly wide.

Inside the next minute, Tiernan Brown’s long ball was flicked on by Brogan and Dwyer nipped in to lob in a delightful second for the Cathedral Town men.

Crana sub Paul Duffy picked out Pól McGrory, whose header crashed off the post with Whoriskey’s fingertips credited.

Eight minutes from the end, Kieran Tobin blasted over from a Murphy corner and St Eunan’s sub Jordan Nugent, who was just on the pitch, got on the end of a Gorman pass, but Caldwell saved well.

In added time, Caldwell denied Nugent again while Dwyer was too high with the rebound.

St Eunan’s College, Letterkenny: Matthew Whoriskey, Jonathan Coady, Tiernan Brown, Shane Monaghan, Keelin Dunleavy, Kieran Tobin, Jack Dwyer, Joel Gorman, Dylan Doogan, Jack Murphy, Oran Brogan. Subs; Jordan Nugent for Doogan (82), Darragh Ellison for Murphy (86).

Crana College, Buncrana: Ethan Caldwell, Ryan Wilson, Cian Downey, Niall McGlynn, Kyle McCann, Ryan McDaid, Darragh Barron, Pól McGrory, Darren Bradley, Ryan Doherty, Jared Flynn. Subs: Paul Duffy for Flynn (69), Rian Gallagher for Barron (80).

Referee: Garbhan Taggart.

McConalogue calls on Minister to intervene ahead of knackery strike

$

Deputy Charlie McConalogue, says the acting Minister for Agriculture and his Department should engage with the Animal Collectors Association (ACA) to reach an agreement which would avoid strike action by knackery operators across the country tomorrow.

The Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Agriculture, Food, and the Marine, said the current impasse is extremely disappointing and frustrating.

“The acting Minister for Agriculture and Officials in his Department need to engage with ACA representatives to reach an agreement which will avoid tomorrow’s strike action.

“If a farmer has an animal who has died, as of tomorrow there will be no service available to have fallen animals collected.

“The farmer cannot bury the animal, so it effectively has to stay on the farm until it can be disposed of properly. Ordinarily, these services would be provided by knackeries. This may become a serious public health matter.

“Most knackeries are family-run businesses. More strenuous regulations have made their job increasingly difficult. The Minister has to consider providing additional supports to ensure the viability of the industry and review the fallen animal scheme which is causing much hardship for knackery operators.”

He added that knackeries are a key component in the livestock industry and this hasn’t been acknowledged by the Minister.

“We need the Minister and stakeholders to engage in order to resolve this dispute and ensure that there is a sustainable and viable knackery service to service livestock farmers across the country,” concluded Deputy McConalogue.

Portsalon Golf Club Ladies course gets a makeover

FEBRUARY may have been a quiet month for golf for many but Portsalon Golf Club have been busy making changes to the Ladies course.

The changes have been formally introduced last week, with a number of holes receiving a makeover, in particular the 2nd, 6th and 18th have been reduced to Par-4’s with new tee boxes in play and the course reduced from par 75 to par 72.

Ladies will also note that the indices for a number of holes have been amended to reflect these new changes.

Some of which will no doubt present a number of interesting challenges and tests for whomever plays it over the next few months but it should also add to the excitement and reward of playing on the Banks.

O’Toole wins Members Competition

A number of Ladies braved the elements on Sunday 23rd to play in the members’ competition under the new playing conditions. Deirdre O’Toole (14) came to the fore with 31pts to win.

Ladies Members competition every Sunday and Friday as the alternative day. Ladies Monthly competitions are ongoing.

Weather the winner – again!

IT WAS another low-key weekend for golf at Portsalon Golf Clin as poor weather conditions battered the countryside, resulting in competitions being abandoned on Saturday.

Some play was managed on Sunday and, hopefully, the very wintery conditions will have subsided by the coming weekend.

The levels of rainfall lately are making for challenging times for our green staff. We have seen double the rain fall recorded on the course during this month compared to last year, with 130ml falling to date this February versus 61.5ml in the whole month last year.

The greens staff have been busy throughout the winter months making improvements to the course in very challenging weather conditions.

As we start to see more play on the course in the coming months, we would ask that everyone please be mindful of your pitch marks and repair them.

The course is very soft at the moment so even a short shot from the edge of the green can create a pitch mark. If you can also please replace you divots and then cover with them divot mix.

As we move into the new season we have a few offers that we want to share with you. Brief storm respite enables a Sheephaven Sunday snorkel

$
0
0

AFTER another weekend of poor weather, which consisted of winds gusts so severe one would be forgiven for thinking it was the storm ‘with no name’, Sheephaven divers found a weather gap long enough to get into the water on Sunday morning.

The brief respite allowed for the Sunday morning snorkel to go ahead in the confines of PortnaBlagh harbour, where the impact of the prolonged poor weather was clearly evident in the sea state.

The incoming northerly swell was crosscut by the waves thrown up by the west wind, but still it was well worth the challenge to enjoy the rawness of a February morning in the sea.

Water temperature remains cold at not much above 8 degrees celsius, but quite manageable for 30 minutes in good quality wetsuits.

No such luxuries for another group of Sunday morning swimmers, the Dunfanghy Dippers who appeared in their swimming togs and took to the water at the same time as the Sheephaven divers, hardy folk indeed!

Well done to everyone who embraced the weather and got the best out of their Sunday morning.

Letterkenny 24/7 Tri a Tri already half sold out

$
0
0

“Damn it to hell, ‘sold out already?’, I was meaning to do that for ages; ah well sure”!!!

Two types of people say that: The wafflers; the nearly-rans; the almost men; the all-mouth and no trousers gang; yer wan with all
the plans and none of the medals. Don’t get me wrong, some-times life genuinely gets in the way,
but not always!

Then, there is the other type – those who just need an extra nudge or reminder, the squad who are
keen but a little slow to out the plan into action, or who have just been snowed under of late but are
rearing to go, given the chance. Good news. There’s still time, albeit there won’t be forever though.

Two weeks after the event launch and we’re 50% sold out – and we’re delighted. We’re thrilled to
see so, so many new faces attending training – running, swimming AND cycling. But here’s the thing,
if you’re reading this and you haven’t started to train but are genuinely keen to give it a rattle,
you’re still on the right side of the witching hour. You’ve time, but get started.

There’s nothing worse in a triathlon club than some girl or fella out doing ‘sneaky training’, you know
the kind “ah sure I’m doing nothing” then getting to the start line marvelling at how after all that ‘no
training’ they knock it out of the park on the day. For the try-a-tri though it’s damn-near the best
way.

You’ve enough to be doing getting going at all without needing to rock-up to a new group
trying to making chit-chat during a running set when the lungs are falling out of you. Train on your
own – enjoy the peace. But get started. The 10-week training plan (on our FB page) starts slow, so if
you’ve any bit of base fitness you’ll catch up quickly.

Again, you don’t have to be in a club to get started, but to be a triathlete you have to get started!! All shapes, sizes and shortcomings welcome.
Alternatively, for those further up the athletic food-chain, of a higher pedigree, if you’re of a mind to
come try out some of our sessions and give it a go and measure up , give us a shout, we’d be
delighted to have you.

Track on a Monday is a great place to start; we’ve a raft of new members
come on board at training even in the last two weeks. Again though, keeping your head down and a
surprise ambush of the field on the day works well too. No one right approach.
All of this hangs on one specific action though – signing-up and getting your entry.

We don’t exaggerate nor do we overstate to try and build demand. We do however want to let you know
what the story is in terms of availability. If you’ve a query or question that you need answered
before signing up, shout – pop us a message through the FB page.

Two weeks in to our training plan we always hear: ‘the oul’ running is taking a bit more out of me
than I thought it would’; ‘that bike-saddle could be non-one’s friend’, or, ‘Christ, that swimming
would wreck ye’. Common complaints; par for the course though. Remarkably unremarkable in
fact. You’ve started now, the niggles will pass and as fitness comes (gradually) the doing gets easier
– all you have to do is hang in AKA get on with it!!

Race Sign-up: Book your place through the Triathlon Ireland website: triathlonireland.com/events.
Facebook Live Q & A – There’s going to be a Q & A session on the try a tri this coming Friday at 8pm.
It’s for anyone who is looking for more info on the event and will give a chance to ask any questions
that people may have at this point. ‘Tell your friends’, and all that!

Event Sponsors – We’re delighted to renew our partnership with Aura Leisure in Letterkenny who
have once again come on board as the main event sponsors. They have been a key factor in the
event’s success over the years and we’re delighted they’ve chosen to come on board again.

Large Influx of New Members
As mentioned above, the club has seen a raft of new faces come on board already this year; it’s great
to see so many signing up. If you want to give training a shot, or have any queries we can help with
before you do, give us a shout.

LETTERKENNY Credit Union is providing financial support to the next generation of Donegal ladies gaelic footballers.

The community-run financial institution is backing the County U18s in their campaign in what is an important year for female sport.

The 20×20 campaign – If she can’t see it, she can’t be it – is a nationwide movement to champion girls and women in sport.

It aims to increase participation, media coverage and attendance at games by 20 per cent this year. The Donegal Minor girls take on Fermanagh in the first round of the Ulster Championship this Saturday (throw-in at Bawnacre, Irvinestown is 2pm).

Letterkenny Credit Union CEO Gordon Randles says his organisation believes it’s important to support the initiative through sponsorship.

“We sponsored the 2019 Minor girls team and we felt it was even more important to once again support the team of 2020, especially because of the campaign this year,” said Gordon.

“The dedication of our young girls pulling on the Donegal jersey deserves equal recognition to match the talent and ambition shown by them.

“Letterkenny Credit Union is at the heart of the community and is delighted to be able to help the Donegal Ladies Minor panel on their journey this year.”

County Minor manager Greg Harkin welcomed the funding.

“The fantastic team at Letterkenny Credit Union is making an important statement with their financial support to our Donegal ladies minors this year,” said Greg.

“This recognition of the efforts put in by all the girls on the panel is really appreciated. Ladies football is run by a separate organisation from the GAA so we have to work really hard to get funding. That makes this support from Letterkenny Credit Union crucial for the season ahead.

“This is an important year for Ladies gaelic football with great work being done by our county development coaches and our club coaches right across Donegal to increase the number of girls and women playing gaelic football.

The Donegal LGFA has more than 3,400 members – just over 3,000 are players from Under 12s right through to Mothers & Others.

There are also county and regional development squads for U13s, U15s and U17s – as well as Championship teams at U14s, U16s, Minors and Seniors.

Letterkenny CU chairperson Ciaran Haran said: “We are very proud to support Donegal LGFA again in 2020.

“We wholeheartedly support the 20×20 vision to give female sports people the recognition and encouragement their efforts deserve.”
